Last drive before the snow.

The intensity of the flares and colors in this image reflect how I was feeling at the moment I took this shot. . .It was an extremely hot and humid afternoon, and the sun was boring down on my face like a laser beam. . .I was sweating like crazy and looking forward to going inside the air-conditioned auditorium after snapping this final shot. . .So, a bit intense with the flares, but they're meant to convey the state of mind and body I was feeling as I wrapped up the afternoon's "shooting spree".. .And it really was a HOT 'Stang!

A muscle car showed up on my block

I was a teenager in the eighties and grew up watching the Transformers TV series, in which Bumblebee was a friendly yellow VW Beetle. Part of me hates the notion that for the live action films Bumblebee was turned into a Camaro, but it does look pretty cool.

Coincidently, this month's LUGnuts challenge is all about American cars, which makes this a suitable second entry.

Buckle up and hang on...that pretty much sums it up!

Ever since I started building cars from films and TV series, I've wanted to add a Transformer to my collection. I've had Tracks for a while, but in a version that is not in any of the films or TV series. I also wanted a Transformer that is more famous and preferably from the films rather than from the original animated TV series. Optimus Prime's transformation sequence is far too complicated, but building my Vanishing Point Challenger made me think about a Camaro.

A Pontiac GTO convertible from circa 1970-72 and a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro RS share driveway space. They're both from an era in which General Motors was still the No. 1 auto maker and captured the imaginations of the car buying public.

Model year 1970 was the year in which GM finally allowed their intermediate size cars to have engines larger than 400 cubic inches. The '70 Chevelle SS, Pontiac GTO, Olds 4-4-2 and Buick GS models could then be had with the 454/455 cubic inch V8's.

Then soon afterwards in the mid 1970’s, things took a downturn. There seemed to be a ‘perfect storm’ of stricter emissions limits with lower compression and reduced power, high insurance costs, ungainly tacked-on 5 mph bumpers and declining assembly quality that made the successors to these cars seem relatively dismal compared to what they were just a few years before. Add the OPEC oil embargo to the US with its resultant long gas purchasing lines from panic buying among American consumers and spot shortages making driving only a necessary but angst-ridden activity.

In 1980, GM introduced their front-wheel-drive X-cars which proved to be less than stellar in many ways. They were certainly far from being 'cool' cars as the General's muscle cars once were.

Building Transformers sing LEGO is challenging. They should look good in both modes (something few people manage to pull off) and tend to be very flimsy. My first version worked reasonably well, but was a bit flimsy and didn't look particularly good in car mode. A major rebuild and a lot of fine-tuning later I'm happy with the look.

The Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, known for its iconic “screaming chicken” hood decal, captured attention with its aggressive styling and high-performance capabilities. From the powerful V8 engines to the track-tuned suspension, the Trans Am exemplified American muscle car excitement.

Fun Fact: The 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am was featured in the iconic movie “Smokey and the Bandit,” further elevating its popularity.
