Thirty-six thousand pounds of mountain muscle is applied on the rear of a 9-car Cumbres Turn as it passes the famous "Jukes Tree" at Milepost 343.5, on its way to the 10,000 ft. Cumbres Pass, some 13 miles up the line. K-36 Locomotive #484 is doing the honors on the tail end today, still going strong 100 years after she left the Baldwin factory. Putting locomotives on both the front and rear of the train here not only ensured that only one of these heavy locomotives would be on the trestle at Wolf Creek at a time, but it also helped to relieve the loading on the draft gear in these wooden freight cars, which could easily be torn out under the high tensile stresses that can develop in a long train on a steep grade like the 4% between Chama, NM and Cumbres Pass, CO.

The prime attraction for National Train Day in St. Paul, Great Northern SD45 No. 400, the Hustle Muscle, heads into Union Depot on May 8, 2014.
A shot where at last I'm getting the hang of working with Speedlites and Softboxes. Bill was lit on the right with vertical strip softbox with grid and on the left a reflector was used to fill in some of the shadow.
