The Black-Necked Grebe (Podiceps nigricollis) is an extraordinary, small waterbird famed for its striking looks, elaborate breeding rituals, and some of the most extreme biological transformations in the animal kingdom.

Physical Transformations & Plumage

Summer Breeding Dress:

They boast a velvety black head and neck, fiery chestnut sides, ruby-red eyes, and fan-like golden ear tufts.

Winter Camouflage:

In the winter, they completely shed their bright colors, morphing into a quiet blend of slate grey and white.

The Upturned Bill:

At all times of the year, they can be distinguished by a fine, dark bill that slightly tilts upward at the tip.

Bizarre Migration Biology

The North American population (where it is known as the Eared Grebe) undergoes an incredible physical cycle during autumn staging at hyper-saline lakes like Mono Lake.

The Flightless Phase:

They stay grounded and remain flightless for 9 to 10 months of the year—longer than any other flying bird.

Organ Shifting:

While gorging on brine shrimp, their digestive organs swell to twice their normal size, while their flight muscles shrivel to a fraction of their mass.

The Reversal:

Before migrating, the process completely reverses; their gut shrinks, and their chest muscles rapidly rebuild so they can take flight.

Breeding and Courtship

Floating Nests:

Because their legs are positioned very far back on their bodies to act as powerful swimming propellers, they are incredibly clumsy on land. Consequently, they build floating platform nests anchored to vegetation right at the water's edge.

Water Dances:

Their courtship consists of highly synchronized, beautiful rituals, including the "penguin dance," where partners rise chest-to-chest out of the water.

Conservation Status:

Globally, they are quite secure, but in places like the UK, they are a highly protected, rare breeding species (Amber-listed) with roughly 50–55 breeding pairs nationwide. Specialized nature sanctuaries manage wetlands precisely to help support their delicate colonies.

Do-do-do, ooh-ooh

I think highly of Hawaii

Got a cheap flight and a plan

So heads up, Nancy, don't get antsy

While I'm working on my tan

'Cause it's crystal clear to me

A weekend in Waikiki is what I need

Yeah, I could use a sip of island serenity

'Cause when I need a vacation

I need some vitamin sea

Aloha, let the good tides roll

Aloha and mahalo

When I walk on the beach

I never wanna leave

'Cause when I get kinda salty

I need some vitamin sea

Yeah, I gotta go now

'Cause I'm a little worn down

And I'm a little burned out

And I need a vacation

Aloha, let the good tides roll

'Cause when I get kinda salty

I need some vitamin sea

Do-do-do, ooh-ooh

Sitting calmly by a palm tree

With a lemonade in my hand

I ain't concerned if I sunburn

I'll catch all the rays I can

'Cause when my gusto gets low

Then that's when I know

I have a tropical deficiency

And a little sand between my toes is the remedy

'Cause when I need a vacation

I need some vitamin sea

Aloha, let the good tides roll

Aloha and mahalo

When I walk on the beach

I never wanna leave

'Cause when I get kinda salty

I need some vitamin sea

Yeah, I gotta go now

'Cause I'm a little worn down

And I'm a little burned out

And I need a vacation

Aloha, let the good tides roll

'Cause when I get kinda salty

I need some vitamin sea

So BRB

I've gone coastal

'Cause when I feel a bit blue

I head for Honolulu

And I am happy as a clam

Do-do-do, ooh-ooh

So I'll put up my feet and tell all my troubles to the ocean breeze

'Cause sitting on a beach is cheaper than therapy

And when I need a vacation

I think you'll know where I'll be

Aloha, let the good tides roll

Yeah, the voice of the ocean

It speaks to my soul

And where my worries went

Well, I guess I don't know

So let the good tides roll

(I need a vacation

'Cause I'm kinda low

(Need a vacation)

Yeah, I gotta go now

'Cause I'm a little worn down

And I'm a little burned out

And I need a vacation

Aloha, let the good tides roll

Aloha, let's go!

'Cause when I get kinda salty

I need some vitamin sea

Yeah (I need a vacation)

I need some vitamin sea

I need a vacation

Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da

I'm on vacation

Da-da-da-da-da-da-da da

And I think I'm gonna stay forever

Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da

Yeah, I'm on vacation

Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da

And I think I'm gonna stay forever

Union Depot Train Days 2022 started off right with the ever-popular night photo shoot.

This year, 7 locomotives (a train days record) were in attendance. The stars of the show of course were the SD45s sent down from Duluth, including GN 400, the Hustle Muscle.

The last time I saw Hustle Muscle she was awaiting a new SD45-2 engine to replace the old one that suffered a broken crankshaft. It was around this time that GNRHS elected to have 400 leave MTM's Jackson Street Roundhouse and return to Duluth, where it had been for much of its time pre-Millenium but post-retirement from BN.

The scene is complete with an illuminated "1st" sign, a popular background feature at many night shoots at SPUD. It's fitting, as GN 400 was the first locomotive to be displayed at Union Depot during the first "Train Days" in 2014 (not to mention the 1st production SD45).

To date, Hustle Muscle has made three appearances at Union Depot Train Days, tied-most with Milwaukee Road 32A, which was also in attendance this year.

A personal thank you to everyone involved to make Union Depot Train Days 2022 happen. Haven't missed a Train Days yet, hoping the streak will continue. Also thanks to Steve Glischinski & Chris Guss for organizing another phenomenal night photo shoot.

Production period 1968/1970.

Dodge Chargers are a great choice for a muscle car restoration project.

Aside from the base 318ci V8, the 383ci motor was offered in both two or four-barrel versions, producing 290 and 330 horsepower, respectively.

On the top of the engine option list was the 375 horsepower 440 Magnum and the legendary 426 Hemi.

On the synthetic track, a striking image emerges: in the centre, a beaming athlete, her body full of energy, her face radiant with victory !

Her sculpted muscles bear witness to impeccable preparation and uncompromising training.

Around her, a circle of collapsed figures. Their backs bent, their gazes lost, they are the embodiment of total despondency. Their bodies, once taut with effort, are now collapsed, as if emptied of all ambition.

Their smiles stand in stark contrast to the gloomy atmosphere around them. Every detail of their movements screams success, while their opponents seem to have given up.

A crystalline moment in which sport reveals its most brutal emotions: absolute glory versus utter despair. !!!! 🤔

Lying beside you.

Here in the dark

Feeling your heart beat

With mine

Softly you whisper

You're so sincere

How could our love

Be so blind

We sailed on together

We drifted apart

And here you are by my side

So now I come to you

With open arms

Nothing to hide

Believe what I say

So here I am

With open arms

Hoping you'll see

What your love means to me

Open arms

Living without you

Living alone

This empty house seems so cold

Wanting to hold you

Wanting you near

How much I wanted you home

But now that you've come back

Turned night into day

I need you to stay

So now I come to you

With open arms

Nothing to hide

Believe what I say

So here I am

With open arms

Hoping you'll see

What your love means to me

Open arms

It don't matter what we do

We keep running back to yesterday

It don't matter who we see

Or how far we go without what we need

I know without you I'm the desert with no pouring rain

If we play the game

We can't win together, no

And if someone else is touchin' you right now

Let me tell you, babe

But you're always on my mind

Yeah, yeah

You're always on my mind

Yeah

Always on my mind

Yeah, you are

Always on my mind

Always on my mind

Always on my mind

(Always on my mind)

That's one seriously muscle-bound insect! By comparison, humans have just 629 muscles in a considerably larger body.

The caterpillar's head capsule alone consists of 248 individual muscles, and about 70 muscles control each body segment. Remarkably, each of the 4,000 muscles is innervated by one or two neurons.

Caterpillars have 12 eyes.

On each side of its head, a caterpillar has 6 tiny eyelets, called stemmata, arranged in a semi-circle. One of the 6 eyelets is usually offset a bit, and located closer to the antennae. You would think an insect with 12 eyes would have excellent eyesight, but that's not the case. The stemmata serve merely to help the caterpillar differentiate between light and dark. If you watch a caterpillar, you'll notice it sometimes moves its head from side to side. This most likely helps it judge depths and distances.

My husband was in the hospital 4-3-06 (Baylor Hospital, Dallas, TX), and the construction going on outside his window (3rd floor) was fascinating. These guys are risk-takers!

The Pontiac GTO, often considered the first true muscle car, became an instant legend with its powerful V8 engine and bold design. With its iconic “GTO” badge, the car represented a new era of performance and set the stage for the muscle car movement.

Fun Fact: The GTO stands for “Gran Turismo Omologato,” a nod to its heritage as a high-performance homologation model.
