A fairly simple and straightforward paved footpath, refreshment after 2 km- that's a fairly easy walk, I thought to myself. In reality, that was probably the longest two km I have ever traversed! Primarily because I forgot I am deep down in the valley floor. To get up to the ridge, one has to climb sharply up some pretty steep steps. I'm probably quite past my prime to do that, and I was soon huffing and puffing with aching calf muscles and feet, the heavy dSLR camera hanging down my neck causing a pain in the neck as well. And my guide was not inclined to stop at this refreshment point- he said it was too nearby and too expensive. We met several people coming in the opporist direction, mostly foreigners, some ladies walking their dogs, and that led me to believe that the path is much easier coming back. We did not come back the same way of course, I was huffing and puffing up the steep steps and a steeply inclined road as we gained height to the top of the ridge. It was no fun at all, and I had to make several rest stops on the way. Of course, the path is fairly level once you get on top of the ridge but it is a fairly long path so walking all that distance and with aching muscles require some degree of physical fitness. Younger people who passed me later appeared equally tired, but kept on, as their energy levels were apparently much higher than mine with my ageing machinery! (Bali, Indonesia, May 2018)
