Intrigue lead me to do some research on these murals from the WPA. And from this research I discovered a couple of things about patronage and the overall concept of works.
First: In some cases free-speech has to be suppressed at the behest of the patron.
Second: I always wondered how the program would create work and benefit so many people if it were just for the artists getting paid. But the artists themselves actually had staff and helpers who assisted with things like preparation, mixing paints, maintenance, cleanup, etc.; and these people were quite content working as a committee.
