Guru Har Sahai Founded

1745 in Lakhi Jungle [now known as Guru Har Sahai]

In the year 1745 A.D. Guru Jiwan Mal, the 7th direct descendent of Guru Ram Dass Ji founded GURU HAR SAHAI:

Guru Har Sahai was a waste tract between the territories occupied by the Barars and Dogars, who were constantly quarrelling over its possession. About two centuries ago, one Jiwan Mal came and pitched his tent upon this waste. He was a Sodhi, 7th in descent from the celebrated Guru Ram Das. He had been driven from his home at Mohammadpur, near Chunian,in the Lahore District (now in Pakistan), by the Kardar who represented Ahmed Shah s Government. No doubt he had made himself obnoxious by showing fanaticism towards the religion. The Dogars Chief, Sultan, gave him protection and encouragement to remain in the place, believing that his presence would in a measure stop the incursions of the Barars and put an end to the disputes between the tribes. The Brars also favored him, knowing him to be a priest of their own religion. He was. Therefore, permitted to establish a number of villages in the plain, and he fixed his boundaries by marking down the tracks of his horse s hooves as he made a long circuit one morning along the boundary of the land he fancied. He named the ilaqa Guru Har Sahai after his eldest son, who eventually took his father s place as the head of the Family.Jiwan Mal appears to have made friends later on with Ahmed Shah, because he was allowed to hold his land free of revenue, and the grant was renewed by Ranjit Singh when the Mohammedans authority disappeared from this part of the Punjab.

The religious influence of the family was very great throughout the region of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, and many of the Sodhis of Guru Har Sahai were employed at the court of Lahore and they accompanied the army on expeditions along the frontier, when it was necessary to keep up the enthusiasm of the men at a high pitch. Inn making these journeys, they seized the opportunity of bringing the followers under their own religious banner from among the scattered Hindu family of the western Punjab. And up to the historic Partition of the country in 1947, continued to be revered by a large numbers of the Sikhs, not only in their immediate neighborhood but also in Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Kohat and the Derajat. On the death of Guru Gulab Singh in 1869, only two-thirds of the Jagir was continued to his successor, Fateh Singh on a life-tenure. It was unfortunate that he became involved in quarrels with his own son, and in his time much of the old influence of the family melted away. Ha was. Moreover, on bad terms with Bishan Singh, his eldest son and to despise him, made a gift of his property and Guruship to his younger son, Kabul Singh. A Law-suit followed and that Guru Bishan Singh was successful, but the expenses of litigation seriously crippled the property. On the death of Fateh Singh in 1879, the Jagir was temporarily resumed, and it was re-granted to Guru Bishan Singh in 1885 under a samad from the supreme government.

Both Guru Gulab Singh and Guru Fateh Singh exercised magisterial powers within the limits of their jagirs but these privileges were not continued to Guru Bishan Singh, who in 1896 was declared, at his own request, unfit to manage his estates, which were placed under the court of Wards. The expenses incurred by the Guru in his case against his brother, Kabul Singh amounted to about one lakh of rupees, and these and other debts were later cleared off and many improvements were effected, so that in 1909, the income from the estate was over Rs 50,000 a year. The family then owned nearly 25,000 acres in nine villages in the Muktsar Tahsil. The guru was a Provincial Darbari. He died in 1910 and was succeeded by his elder son, Jaswant Singh. He had given away to his brother Autar Singh half of the property; expect the Abadi land for his lifetime and the two brothers jointly gifted a village to Hira Singh, the son of their sister in perpetuity.

As head of the family, Guru Jaswant Singh continued to be guardian of the sacred book and of the rosary which originally belonged to Guru Nanak Dev. These objects, are held in high reverence by the people who traveled long distances for the privilege of seeing them. One Pothi was lost in 1970 when Guru Jaswant Singh was traveling from Delhi to Firozpur by train. Guru Jaswant Singh died on 18th March 1971 and was succeeded by his eldest son Guru Atamjit Singh who died in 1979. He was succeeded by his eldest son Guru Haresh Singh. Guru Haresh Singh abdicated the Gaddi in favor of his eldest and only son Guru Yuvraj Singh Sodhi, who was born on 25 May 1994. Guru Yuvraj Singh is 17th in direct descendent from Guru Ram Das the 4th Sikh Guru and is the present Gaddi Nashin of Pothimala and head of the Guruharsahai Sodhi family.

Ludhiana: The depiction of Parvati’s marriage to Shiva, in the Shiva Purana, could be seen as an allegory illustrating the desire of an individual to achieve a state of liberation from strife and banality. If one sets aside, for the moment, the idea of Shiva as a male entity, and sees him instead as representing a state beyond human suffering, then Parvati becomes symbolic of the aspirant who wishes to achieve nirvana, and the story becomes something considerably more than a quaint romantic tale. The acharyas (scholastic saints), who wrote the Puranas, may have interpreted Parvati’s asceticism as a means of winning Shiva’s hand in marriage, in order to discourage young girls from following the goddess’s example, and becoming renunciates.

Sri Muktsar Sahib City, the district headquarters of Sri Muktsar Sahib district is a historical city. It is intimately connected with Sikh religion. Guru Gobind Singh Ji, fought his last battle against Mughals in 1705 A.D. at Sri Muktsar Sahib. During fighting, 40 disciples of Guru Ji know as ‘40 Muktas’ (40 liberated ones) sacrificed their lives. These 40 Sikhs were those who insisted that Guru Ji should leave the Anandpur Sahib fort, when it was besieged by Mughal army. Guru Ji had than asked these followers to leave him if they so desired but they should give him in written that he is not their guru and they are not his Sikh i.e. followers. When these Sikhs returned to their homes in Majha territory of Punjab, they were not welcomed by family members as they had left the Guru at time of trouble. They were overcome by shame and not in a position to face Guru Gobind Singh Ji again. On learning that Guru Ji was in region of present Sri Muktsar Sahib the 40 Sikhs lead by Bhai Mahan Singh and accompanied by Mai Bhago, an illustrious woman in Sikh history left their homes to help him. At that time Mughal army was searching for Guru ji. A pitched battle was fought near a pond called Khidrane di Dhab. The 40 sikhs fought valiantly for guru ji and achieved martyrdom. The outcome was in favour of Sikhs. Mughal forces failed in capturing or harming Guru Sahib and fled from battlefield. After the battle was over, Guru Ji visited the battlefield. One of the 40 Sikhs, Sardar Mahan Singh was about to die, Guru Ji took his head in his arms and asked what did he want? Sardar Mahan Singh requested Guru Ji to tear the paper (Bedawa), they had given to him at Anandpur Sahib ‘you are not our guru and we are not your followers’. On this Guru Ji tore the bedawa . These 40 Sikhs were henceforth called 40 Muktas. The city that grew at the site of the battle was called Sri Muktsar Sahib after them. Mela Maghi, a famous fair of Punjab, is celebrated at Sri Muktsar Sahib on next day after Lohri every year as a tribute to those 40 Sri Muktsar Sahib.

Mai Bhago, (Mata Bhag Kaur) the sole survivor of the battle of Khidrana, i.e. Battle of Muktsar (29 December 1705), was a descendant of Pero Shah, the younger brother of Bhai Langah, a Dhillon Jatt who had become a Sikh during the time of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj. Born at her ancestral village of Jhabal in presentday Amritsar district of the Punjab, she was married to Nidhan Singh Varaich of Patti. A staunch Sikh by birth and upbringing, she was distressed to hear in 1705 that some of the Sikhs of her neighbourhood who had gone to Anandpur to fight for Guru Gobind Singh Ji had deserted him under adverse conditions.

Finding the men she persuaded them to find the Guru, to apologize for leaving Anandpur while it had been under attack and seek his permission to be reinstated as Sikhs. She set off along with them and some other Sikhs to find the Guru, who had been pursued by Mughal forces since leaving Anandpur. They caught up with him in the area around Malva. Mat Bhago and the men she was leading stopped near the dhab (pool) of Khidrana just as an imperial army was about to attack the Guru. The 40 sikhs who had asked the Guru for permission to leave Anandpur, had been allowed to leave, but the Guru had asked them first to leave the Khalsa and dis-avowing him as their Guru. Now fate gave them the chance to redeem themselves, nevermind that even though they appeared as Sikhs, they were no longer Khalsa, so despite the fact that they surely faced certain death, the forty (chali) men along with Mai Bhago, waded headlong into the Muslim forces (around 10,000 soldiers) and inflicted so much damage that the Muslims were finally forced to give up their attack and retreat as darkness fell to lick their wounds in the nearby woods. The Guru had watched the battle from a nearby hill and with deadly accuracy had rained down a flurry of arrows on the Mughal fighters during the attack. Seeing little activity among the party that had come to his aid he rode to the battlefield

Situated on the Malout-Bhatinda road, lies the Gurdwara Tehri Sahib, a place blessed by the visit of the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh while on his way to Damdama Sahib, after winning the battle of Muktsar.

According to legend, when the Guru, along with his Sikh warriors, made a stopover at the village of Thehri, a yogi named Hukum Nath tried to impress him with his mystical powers, but failed in his attempt for none of his powers worked in the presence of Guru Gobind Singh.

It also believed that in this place, in order to test the Sikhs, the Guru lowered his arrow to salute the grave of the Muslim saint, Qasim Bhatti.

When his followers immediately asked the Guru to pay a fine of twenty-five rupees for this unlawful act, he willingly accepted the punishment.

Bhai Kuldeep Singh, a priest at Gurudwara Thehri Sahib, said: "By this, Guru Gobind Singh wanted to test his Sikh followers, and see whether they were true to their faith. The Guru said, in future the Sikhs would be the protectors of the Sikh faith and `maryada'. They would prosper and grow from strength to strength following his teachings".

It is also believed that Guru Gobind Singh halted near a group of three `Jand' trees and rested his arms and belt on them. The trees, which are almost 300 years old, still stand as a testimony to his visit inside the gurudwara complex.

uktsar is a flourishing town and a sub-divisional headquarter. It is an important pilgrim centre. Originally it used to be called 'Khidrana Ki Dhab'. The present name is derived from Chali Muktas(Forty Redeemed) who sacrificed their lives here, fighting against the Mughals. The troops of Wazir Khan Nawab of Sirhind, came in pursuit of the Guru, fought with the Sikhs and were routed.

This was the last engagement of the Guru. It took place on December29, 1705. The Guru personally cremated the martyrs. When Guru Gobind Singh along with devotees was collecting the dead bodies for cremation, he saw one of them named Mahan Singh, bleeding to death. On seeing the Guru, he made an effort to rise. The Guru at once took him in his embrace, and sat down with him. Mahan Singh tearful and exhausted, requested the great Master to destroy the Bedahwa the letter disclaiming his Guruship, submitted by the Sikhs of Majha while escaping from the fort of Anandpur Sahib. He also restored the broken link. The merciful Guru took the said document and tore it up. That is how the Great Guru showed infinite mercy towards his followers. The four Gurdwaras located at Muktsar are Shahid Ganj Sahib, Tibbi Sahib, Tambu Sahib and Darbar Sahib.

Gurdwara ShahidGanj Sahib also called Angitha Sahib commemorates the place where the last rites of the Forty Muktas , or the Liberated ones, were performed. Guru Gobind Singh Ji himself performed the last rites of the forty sikhs who laid down their lives in the battle at Muktsar and named the place as ShahidGanj. A gurdwara was later constructed here and named Gurdwara ShahidGanj Sahib. The Magh Mela, held on the 12th and 13th of January is celebrated with great enthusiasm here.

Gurdwara Shahid Ganj is picturesquely set, beside a water tank. its walls are covered with paintings of the Sikh Gurus and scenes from their lives. This shrine is meeting place of millions of devotees, who gather here on the first day of the month Magha according to the Indian Calendar (January-February), to pay their homage to the martyrs.
