Only a few years after defeating the Fatimid Caliphate, Saladin set out to build a wall that would surround both Cairo and Fustat. Saladin is recorded as saying, "With a wall I will make the two [cities of Cairo and Fustat] into a unique whole, so that one army may defend them both; and I believe it good to encircle them with a single wall from the bank of the Nile to the bank of the Nile." The Citadel would be the centerpiece of the wall. Built on a promontory beneath the Muqattam Hills east of the Old City, was once famous for its fresh breeze and grand views of the city, and was fortified by the Ayyubid ruler Salah al-Din (Saladin) between 1176 and 1183 AD. The purpose of the heavy fortification of the citadel was twofold: the Ayyubid Saladin rose to power after a bloody coup d'état against the Fatimids at a time when Egypt and the Orient faced a Papal Crusade against their lands and peoples.
The fortifications therefore aimed to protect the infant dynasty from any potential uprisings, as well as to protect Cairo from any potential Crusader attacks.
The Mamluks, a dynasty of slave warriors who inherited the Ayyubids built their imperial mosque in the Citadel during the reign of al-Nassir Muhammad ibn Qalawoon. The mosque continued to proclaim Mamluk sovereignty and majesty over Cairo even after the Ottoman conquest of Egypt. Al-Nassir Muhammad's mosque remained unrivaled in the Citadel until Mehmet Ali Pasha built his mosque (between 1830-1848) proclaiming Cairo independent from Istanbul's Ottomans and its mosque a rival to the imperial Sultan Ahmet Mosque.
The Citadel was the seat of government from its erection by Saladin until the reign of Khedive Ismail (1863-1879) who moved to his newly built Abdin Palace in the Ismailiya neighborhood (Khedival Cairo) in the 1860s.

The Citadel is a fortified enclosure begun by Salah al-Din in 1176 AD on an outcrop of the Muqattam Hills as part of a large defensive system to protect both Cairo to the north and Fustat to the southwest. It was the center of Egyptian government and residence of its rulers until 1874, when Khedive Isma'il moved to 'Abdin Palace.

Poster advertising a live simulcast of "The Rumble in the Jungle" at MacArthur Court, University of Oregon on September 24, 1974 (rescheduled for October 30, 1974)
The famous “Rumble in the Jungle” between George Forman and Muhammad Ali was originally set to happen on September 25, 1974 (September 24 in the United States due to the difference in time zones). However, eight days prior, Foreman was cut above his right eye by an accidental elbow thrown by his sparring partner Bill McMurray in a sparring session. Foreman's cut required 11 stitches, and the date of the fight was pushed back five weeks to October 30.
