The mosque was commissioned by Muhammad Ali Pasha between 1830 and 1848 and is situated on the summit of the Citadel. This Ottoman mosque, the largest to be built in the first half of the 19th century, is, with its animated silhouette and twin minarets, the most visible mosque in Cairo. The mosque was built in memory of Tusun Pasha, Muhammad Ali's oldest son, who died in 1816.

The mosque was built on the site of old Mamluk buildings in Cairo's Citadel between 1830 and 1848, although not completed until the reign of Said Pasha in 1857. The architect was Yusuf Bushnak from Istanbul and its model was the Yeni Mosque

It is built on the site of Mamluk palaces destroyed at the behest of the patron, an act reminiscent of that of Saladin who wiped out all traces of Fatimid power by dismantling their palaces, and it also superseded the adjacent Mosque of al-Nasir Muhammad as the new state mosque. This first independent ruler of Egypt chose to build his state mosque entirely in the architectural style of his former overlords, the Ottomans, unlike the Mamluks who, despite their political submission to the Ottomans, tenaciously stuck to the architectural styles of the two Mamluk dynasties. But then, as an Ottoman governor of Albanian origin, his primary identification was with the Ottomans rather than his local subjects and he even had designs on the Sultanate for a time.

This mosque, with its general scheme consisting of a square sanctuary covered by a central dome flanked by four half-domes, is a conscious revival of Ottoman imperial style. The style, however, was not the only imperial aspect that the architect strived to emulate. The monumental scale of the sanctuary rivals that of Sultan Ahmet (1609-17); the adjoining courtyard surrounded by the typical domed porticoes is of a larger area than that of the Süleymaniye (1550-57); the slightly pointed dome, although of a diameter smaller than its Ottoman counterparts, has a profile equal in height to that of the Süleymaniye and higher than that of the Selimiye (1569-74); the height of the minarets is unrivaled by any of their Ottoman counterparts.

The mosque's decoration styles shows strong influence from the European and Ottoman renaissance, characteristic of Ottoman architecture in Istanbul from this period. The clock tower and abolition fountain are examples of this influence as are the alabaster panels, the interior design and the inside decoration of the dome.

Born and raised in Louisville, Ali was born Cassius Clay, having been named after his father, who in turn was named after a famous fighter for emancipation — Kentucky planter and politician Cassius Marcellus Clay.

Ali would go on to make a name for himself.

This was taken at a Louisville pumpkin festival a few days before Halloween. Ali had passed away in June.

The legendary boxer needs no introduction.

Madame Tussaud's - always a tacky tourist trap, but also always a good place to test my portrait photography skills - and my prime lens (35mm f/1.8).

Sarnia Sertoma Clubs Annual Sportsman Dinner 1974 Guildwood Inn - Muhammad Ali doodle on tablecloth. Larry Csonka was scheduled but couldn't make it (too bad), but Ali stepped in last minute which was "the greatest"!

George Chavalo was also a speaker that night.

Saw that Ali was doodling away, didn't know onto what, until after the dinner. Raced up to the table, saw the doodle, saw it was signed, dated and began removing dishes etc and rolled up the tablecloth.

It was a night to remember...RIP

–Jaaa …

Seven is culito in mai cantry (“Siete es culito en mi país”).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Is it true you're going to fight with Clay?

'Of course, I said, responding to reporters.

- What do you think of those who say it is foolish and a lie?

-Let them say they are envious. And I laugh of the envious.

Once the fight is confirmed, the question points to another side:

- Does Clay you can win?

-Je! Better ask me in what round is dropped.

Clay, and converted to Islam after refusing to go to war in Vietnam accepted, though his relatives tried to convince him not to. They feared that Bonavena, a handsome who knew all the tricks of boxing, a burden too heavy for a 15 rounds Ali almost inactive. What no one ever imagined is that Ringo would win a battle that the boxer Angelo Dundee never lost, that of the previous chicaneo below the ring.

Chicken. The concentration was in Grossinger, 200 miles from Manhattan. There was the clan Bonavena about a month. When American journalists questioned him, Ringo did not speak of Ali or Clay, spoke of the "Black". "Went on to say that printing was a little fight because" blacks have smell, '"says Dr. Cacho Paladino, who shared the previous days. "I said 'crazy eye here are all black'. And he began to clarify that not all blacks were smell, it was only Clay. Anyway ... ".

This raised the ire of the pupil of Angelo Dundee. And all exploded at the weigh before the fight. They sat in a chair separated by a doctor who would take the pressure. Ali took his shirt off and started covering her nose Bonavena.

- Iu Guay gou of armi nou? (Why did not you go to war?)

Ali looked unable to believe his ears: a white boxer, South America and without a world title, taking canchero plate before him, before all the TV.

-I'll give you a beating, said hot.

Iu-JAAA ... ... chiken chiken arr e, chiken! ... Pipipipi ("You're a chicken"), Ringo said, shaking his hand as he frightens a fly in the air.

-You should never have had so spoken of Muhammad Ali, Brown said, while placing the stethoscope on the left arm.

-Clay ... Bonavena said.

- Ali!

-Clay, Clay ... Ringo repeated, entering into laughter.

-You fall in nine American changed the subject, the whole world to hear, you will be mine in the nine.

Maib daun-cam in seven iu ("Maybe you will fall in the seven"), Ringo redoubled.

-Ok, you say I say seven and nine, said Ali, aimed at ending the matter.

Seven-Ai laik ("I like the seven"), Lefty followed. Seven is in mai ass cantry ("Seven is my country ass").

-Let's get in place, said Ali, overwhelmed. Who speaks this language? (For Spanish).

"I," said an Argentine. "Ask what round you think you can beat me?"

Translation without Ringo said, "Ahhhhhhh ... ¿¿preocupadooo you, uh !!??. Hahahahaha. Tell him do not say anything now, sorprais, sorpraissssss!

The advance took so great that the Ku Klux Klan made public his support for Bonavena and the Black Panthers were on the outskirts of Madison to support Ali. The atmosphere was tense. Ali of pants and red and white gown. Bonavena coat blue and white and dark blue with red. The fight was intense. The Argentine to reach with "the bomb", hit that he gave his left boleada. In the ninth round, Ali slipped. The story was as a fall, was not really such. It is true that the blows of the fight that were shocking for the American and Ringo showed he was in tune with the best of all time. But, exhausted, lost by knockout in the fifteenth round.

Al-Rifa‘i (Ahmad ibn ʽAli al-Rifaʽi) 1119-1183, was an Iraqi Sunni Muslim preacher, ascetic, mystic, jurist, and theologian, known for being the eponymous founder of the Rifaʽi tariqa (Sufi order) of Islam. Although this mosque is named after him, the shrine contains the burials of his grandson, 'Ali Abu Shibbak al-Rifai and another Sufi mystic, 'Abd Allah al-Ansari.

The Mosque of al-Rifa'i replaced a zawiya (shrine) of the sufi saint, al-Rifa'i. It is also the royal mausoleum of Muhammad 'Ali's family, in addition to Hosh al-Basha (the Courtyard of the Pasha), in the Southern Cemetery.

Patron: commissioned by Hoshiyar Qadin (Hoşyar Kadın) ?-1885, consort to Ibrahim Pasha & Walida Pasha to their son, Isma'il Pasha.

Original architect: Hussein Pasha Fahmi (a distant cousin of Muhammad 'Ali), Minister of Awqaf, who died in 1880 when work stopped.

Construction Supervisor: Khalil Agha chief eunuch & director of estates for Isma'il Pasha.

Completed: work resumed in 1905 when the Khedive, Abbas II, ordered its completion. Work was supervised by architect Max Herz (Herz Miksa, Hungarian) 1856-1919, head of the Comité de Conservation des Monuments de l'Art Arabe.

Tomb of Hoshiyar Qadin (Hoşyar Kadın) d.1986, wife of Ibrahim (Kavalalı İbrahim Paşa) 1789-1848, eldest son of Muhammad Ali (reigned briefly during his father's incapacity, 1848). Mother of Isma'il (İsmail Paşa, Ismail the Magnificent) 1830-1895 (grandson of Muhammad 'Ali, Wali of Egypt & Sudan (r.1863-1867)).

Heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali lunges at challenger Joe Frazier during the 10th round of a boxing match in Manila in 1975. Ali won a 14th round TKO over Frazier. October 1, 1975 Manila, Philippines

Muhammad Ali ruled Egypt during the first half of the 19th century and built this mosque in the memory of his eldest son.

Being Ottoman, he didn't appreciate Egypt's treasures so some of the limestone that when into this mosque came from the pyramids. He also gave one of the Luxor obelisks to France (now in the Place de la Concorde).

In the pantheon of sports stars, a few individuals possess transcendent ability and charisma. Through the media, popular culture, and commerce, these larger-than-life stars command worldwide attention. As athletes they inspire imitation. As super-celebrities, they capture the public imagination. As historical figures, they become symbols of their times.

Truly a warm kind thoughtful and beloved man by all....I photographed him many times and he laughed sometimes at all the silly photogs (like me) making such a big deal about him.
