Thanks for the Memories: Music, Sports and Entertainment History, an ongoing exhibition rotates a display of iconic and well-loved artifacts that mirror the ways music, sports and entertainment have played major roles in U.S. life, shaping our national memory and often defining what is American to the nation and the world.

The National Museum of American History (NMAH), administered by the Smithsonian Institute, collects, preserves and displays American heritage in the areas of social, political, cultural, scientific and military history. The museum, which first opened in 1964 as the Museum of History and Technology, is located on the National Mall in one of the last structures designed by McKim, Mead & White. It was renamed in 1980, and closed for a 2-year, $85 milliomn renovation by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP from 2006 to 2008.

The Smithsonian Institution, an educational and research institute and associated museum complex, administered and funded by the government of the United States and by funds from its endowment, contributions, and profits from its shops and its magazines, was established in 1846. Although concentrated in Washington DC, its collection of over 136 million items is spread through 19 museums, a zoo, and nine research centers from New York to Panama.

Phase One of the Madison Square Garden transformation, constructed for the 2011-12 seasons, included the new Delta Sky360° Club with exclusive views into the MSG Network Broadcast stuidio and of the local teams as they enter and exit the court and ice through clear glass panels.

Madison Square Garden, often abbreviated as MSG, known colloquially simply as The Garden, has been the name of four incarnations of arenas. Madison Square Garden derives its name from the park where the first two gardens were located. As the venue moved to new locations the name still stuck.

On February 11, 1968 the fourth Madison Square Garden opened after the financially troubled Pennsylvania Railroad tore down Pennsylvania Station (although the tracks remained underneath). The current Garden is the hub of Madison Square Garden Center in the office and entertainment complex known as Pennsylvania Plaza, for the railroad station atop which the complex is located.

The present Garden hosts 320 events a year but it is best known as the home of the Madison Square Garden-owend New York Knicks (NBA) and the New York Rangers (NHL). It also hosts New York Liberty (WNBA), the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus, selected home games for the St. John's Red Storm (NCAA), the annual pre and postseason NIT tournaments, the NBA Draft, and the Millrose Games. It has previously hosted the 1976, 1980 and 1992 Democratic National Conventions, the 2004 Republican National Convention, Wrestlemania and the NFL Draft for many years (now held at Garden-owned Radio City Music Hall).

Before promoters moved boxing to Las Vegas, MSG was considered the mecca of boxing, hosting the biggest of fights, including many of Joe Louis, the Roberto Duran-Ken Buchanan affair, and the first and second Joe Frazier-Muhammad Ali bouts. MSG also hosts large arena concerts. Particularly famous ones include The Concert for New York City, the Concert for Bangladesh, Led Zeppelin's "Song Remains the Same" concert and John Lennon's final concert appearance before his murder in 1980.

Seating in the present Madison Square Garden is arranged in five ascending levels. The lowest one is referred to as "rink-side" for hockey games or "court-side" for basketball games. Next above this is the First Promenade, followed by the Second Promenade, First Balcony and Second Balcony. The seats of these five levels originally bore the colors red, orange, yellow, green, and blue, respectively; however, this color scheme has since been changed, mainly because the "blue seats" had become synonymous with rowdy behavior by fans, particularly those attending New York Rangers hockey games. It was a common sight for Rangers fans to set fire to the jerseys of fans from visiting teams, especially those from the New York Islanders, Boston Bruins, and the Philadelphia Flyers. Rangers fans in the blue seats would defend their home from the invading hordes of visiting teams' fans at all costs. Fights were constantly occurring, and ushers would often let Rangers fans get their last punches or kicks in before hauling away the opposing fan. For hockey, the Garden seats 18,200; for basketball, 19,763; and for concerts 20,000 center stage, 19,522 end-stage. The arena features 20,976 square feet (1949 m²) of arena floor space.

The Garden became the first artificial ice rink in North America in 1879. It hosted the first indoor professional American football game in 1902, the first televised basketball game in 1940, the first color televised boxing match in 1964, and the first Wrestlemania in 1985. It was the site of Wendell Willkie's 20,000-person civil rights rally in 1943 and home to John F. Kennedy's 45th birthday celebration in 1962 where Marilyn Monroe sang here infamous "Happy Birthday, Mr. President."

The two examples of Rudi Lubbers' autograph are the only examples I found on the "net". They were both done recently - my example on the photo was signed about 20 years ago.

The description reads: Satin-finish 10 x 8 black and white photograph signed in gold ink by an opponent of Muhammad Ali.

My challenge is to find out who this boxer is...

Muhammad Ali: all of his 61 fights as a professional - Muhammad Ali entered the ring 61 times after turning professional in 1960. Here’s every fight from Louisville to London and Munich to Manila - LINK - www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/jun/05/muhammad-ali-every-...

First clue - he is a white boxer - Muhammad Ali fought several white boxers during his career.

My guess who this boxer was - Rudi Lubbers - LINK to a photo of Rudi - africanring.co.za/product/rudi-lubbers-fought-muhammad-al...

- Rudi Lubbers competed in the 1964 Olympics as light heavyweight, and in the 1968 Olympics as a heavyweight.

- Lubbers is best remembered for lasting the distance in a 12-round fight with Muhammad Ali in 1973.

- In 1986 Lubbers was arrested by the Portuguese police for drug smuggling (cannabis) and sentenced to 8 years in prison.

Division - heavy

Record - 28 wins with 13 KO's / 8 Losses with 4 KO's

Bouts - 36

Rounds - 224

KOs - 46.43%

Career - 1970-1981

Debut - 1970-02-23

Birth name - Rudolfus Josefus Maria Lubbers

Born - 17 August 1945

Nationality - Netherlands

Height - 6′ 0″

Residence - Heerhugowaard, Netherlands

Birth place - Heerhugowaard, Netherlands

Nationally, Lubbers won six light-heavyweight and two heavyweight amateur titles. In 1970, he turned professional, and in 1971 won a national heavyweight title, holding it until his retirement in 1981. Internationally, he unsuccessfully competed at several European championships. In 1973 he fought Muhammad Ali in Jakarta and managed to last all 12 rounds. In 1986, he was arrested in Portugal for drug trafficking and jailed for four years. After that he worked on funfairs with his wife Ria, and eventually became homeless after she was declared bankrupt in 1999. LINK - alchetron.com/Rudie-Lubbers

Lubbers said he had remained friends with Ali who fought him in 1973 as he prepared for a rematch with his great rival Joe Frazier. "Years after the fight, he (Ali) came to Holland," said Lubbers who revealed that Ali had told him something he would remember forever. "Ali told me: `Rudi, you're the only white man from whom I ever learned something'." LINK - www.wionews.com/photos/he-lost-to-muhammad-ali-then-fell-...

Al-Rifa‘i (Ahmad ibn ʽAli al-Rifaʽi) 1119-1183, was an Iraqi Sunni Muslim preacher, ascetic, mystic, jurist, and theologian, known for being the eponymous founder of the Rifaʽi tariqa (Sufi order) of Islam. Although this mosque is named after him, the shrine contains the burials of his grandson, 'Ali Abu Shibbak al-Rifai and another Sufi mystic, 'Abd Allah al-Ansari.

The Mosque of al-Rifa'i replaced a zawiya (shrine) of the sufi saint, al-Rifa'i. It is also the royal mausoleum of Muhammad 'Ali's family, in addition to Hosh al-Basha (the Courtyard of the Pasha), in the Southern Cemetery.

Patron: commissioned by Hoshiyar Qadin (Hoşyar Kadın) ?-1885, consort to Ibrahim Pasha & Walida Pasha to their son, Isma'il Pasha.

Original architect: Hussein Pasha Fahmi (a distant cousin of Muhammad 'Ali), Minister of Awqaf, who died in 1880 when work stopped.

Construction Supervisor: Khalil Agha chief eunuch & director of estates for Isma'il Pasha.

Completed: work resumed in 1905 when the Khedive, Abbas II, ordered its completion. Work was supervised by architect Max Herz (Herz Miksa, Hungarian) 1856-1919, head of the Comité de Conservation des Monuments de l'Art Arabe.

The Greatest

The mosque was commissioned by Muhammad Ali Pasha between 1830 and 1848 and is situated on the summit of the Citadel. This Ottoman mosque, the largest to be built in the first half of the 19th century, is, with its animated silhouette and twin minarets, the most visible mosque in Cairo. The mosque was built in memory of Tusun Pasha, Muhammad Ali's oldest son, who died in 1816.

The mosque was built on the site of old Mamluk buildings in Cairo's Citadel between 1830 and 1848, although not completed until the reign of Said Pasha in 1857. The architect was Yusuf Bushnak from Istanbul and its model was the Yeni Mosque

It is built on the site of Mamluk palaces destroyed at the behest of the patron, an act reminiscent of that of Saladin who wiped out all traces of Fatimid power by dismantling their palaces, and it also superseded the adjacent Mosque of al-Nasir Muhammad as the new state mosque. This first independent ruler of Egypt chose to build his state mosque entirely in the architectural style of his former overlords, the Ottomans, unlike the Mamluks who, despite their political submission to the Ottomans, tenaciously stuck to the architectural styles of the two Mamluk dynasties. But then, as an Ottoman governor of Albanian origin, his primary identification was with the Ottomans rather than his local subjects and he even had designs on the Sultanate for a time.

This mosque, with its general scheme consisting of a square sanctuary covered by a central dome flanked by four half-domes, is a conscious revival of Ottoman imperial style. The style, however, was not the only imperial aspect that the architect strived to emulate. The monumental scale of the sanctuary rivals that of Sultan Ahmet (1609-17); the adjoining courtyard surrounded by the typical domed porticoes is of a larger area than that of the Süleymaniye (1550-57); the slightly pointed dome, although of a diameter smaller than its Ottoman counterparts, has a profile equal in height to that of the Süleymaniye and higher than that of the Selimiye (1569-74); the height of the minarets is unrivaled by any of their Ottoman counterparts.

The mosque's decoration styles shows strong influence from the European and Ottoman renaissance, characteristic of Ottoman architecture in Istanbul from this period. The clock tower and abolition fountain are examples of this influence as are the alabaster panels, the interior design and the inside decoration of the dome.

Sarnia Sertoma Clubs Annual Sportsman Dinner 1974 Guildwood Inn - Muhammad Ali doodle on tablecloth. Larry Csonka was scheduled but couldn't make it (too bad), but Ali stepped in last minute which was "the greatest"!

George Chavalo was also a speaker that night.

Saw that Ali was doodling away, didn't know onto what, until after the dinner. Raced up to the table, saw the doodle, saw it was signed, dated and began removing dishes etc and rolled up the tablecloth.

It was a night to remember...RIP

The legendary boxer needs no introduction.

Portrait of Muhammad Ali

–Jaaa …

Seven is culito in mai cantry (“Siete es culito en mi país”).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Is it true you're going to fight with Clay?

'Of course, I said, responding to reporters.

- What do you think of those who say it is foolish and a lie?

-Let them say they are envious. And I laugh of the envious.

Once the fight is confirmed, the question points to another side:

- Does Clay you can win?

-Je! Better ask me in what round is dropped.

Clay, and converted to Islam after refusing to go to war in Vietnam accepted, though his relatives tried to convince him not to. They feared that Bonavena, a handsome who knew all the tricks of boxing, a burden too heavy for a 15 rounds Ali almost inactive. What no one ever imagined is that Ringo would win a battle that the boxer Angelo Dundee never lost, that of the previous chicaneo below the ring.

Chicken. The concentration was in Grossinger, 200 miles from Manhattan. There was the clan Bonavena about a month. When American journalists questioned him, Ringo did not speak of Ali or Clay, spoke of the "Black". "Went on to say that printing was a little fight because" blacks have smell, '"says Dr. Cacho Paladino, who shared the previous days. "I said 'crazy eye here are all black'. And he began to clarify that not all blacks were smell, it was only Clay. Anyway ... ".

This raised the ire of the pupil of Angelo Dundee. And all exploded at the weigh before the fight. They sat in a chair separated by a doctor who would take the pressure. Ali took his shirt off and started covering her nose Bonavena.

- Iu Guay gou of armi nou? (Why did not you go to war?)

Ali looked unable to believe his ears: a white boxer, South America and without a world title, taking canchero plate before him, before all the TV.

-I'll give you a beating, said hot.

Iu-JAAA ... ... chiken chiken arr e, chiken! ... Pipipipi ("You're a chicken"), Ringo said, shaking his hand as he frightens a fly in the air.

-You should never have had so spoken of Muhammad Ali, Brown said, while placing the stethoscope on the left arm.

-Clay ... Bonavena said.

- Ali!

-Clay, Clay ... Ringo repeated, entering into laughter.

-You fall in nine American changed the subject, the whole world to hear, you will be mine in the nine.

Maib daun-cam in seven iu ("Maybe you will fall in the seven"), Ringo redoubled.

-Ok, you say I say seven and nine, said Ali, aimed at ending the matter.

Seven-Ai laik ("I like the seven"), Lefty followed. Seven is in mai ass cantry ("Seven is my country ass").

-Let's get in place, said Ali, overwhelmed. Who speaks this language? (For Spanish).

"I," said an Argentine. "Ask what round you think you can beat me?"

Translation without Ringo said, "Ahhhhhhh ... ¿¿preocupadooo you, uh !!??. Hahahahaha. Tell him do not say anything now, sorprais, sorpraissssss!

The advance took so great that the Ku Klux Klan made public his support for Bonavena and the Black Panthers were on the outskirts of Madison to support Ali. The atmosphere was tense. Ali of pants and red and white gown. Bonavena coat blue and white and dark blue with red. The fight was intense. The Argentine to reach with "the bomb", hit that he gave his left boleada. In the ninth round, Ali slipped. The story was as a fall, was not really such. It is true that the blows of the fight that were shocking for the American and Ringo showed he was in tune with the best of all time. But, exhausted, lost by knockout in the fifteenth round.

In the pantheon of sports stars, a few individuals possess transcendent ability and charisma. Through the media, popular culture, and commerce, these larger-than-life stars command worldwide attention. As athletes they inspire imitation. As super-celebrities, they capture the public imagination. As historical figures, they become symbols of their times.

On July 19, 1972, it took Muhammad Ali 11 rounds to defeat Al 'Blue' Lewis at Croke Park, Dublin. A mere footnote in the larger Ali story, this fight against a game ex-convict from Detroit marked the culmination of an extraordinary week in Ireland's sporting and cultural history. From the moment the world's most charismatic athlete touched down at Dublin Airport and announced his maternal great-grandfather Abe Grady had emigrated from County Clare more than a century before, the country was in his thrall and, of course, being Ali - he loved it. It was to be a most extraordinary week for both him and the people he met. Ali was both charming and charmed by those who came to pay homage - among them, the then Taoiseach, Jack Lynch, civil rights campaigner Bernadette Devlin, oscar-winning director John Huston, actor Peter O'Toole and an old lady who invited him into her house for a cup of tea.
