Muhammad Parvez’s journey to owning his own chicken farm followed a well-worn path in agriculture and the trades: apprenticeship with anther business owner, equipping him with the skills to set out on his own. Before building his own chicken houses, he worked for a grower in Berlin, Md. for three years. Today, he owns a clean, neat eight-house chicken farm in Oak Hall, Va., raising flocks of 312,000 birds for Tyson’s Temperanceville plant nearby. “This job is hard, but slowly, slowly, I’m getting better. I’m always working very hard,” Parvez says. “It’s a family business. I have good workers, too, and I’m always proud of them” – calling over his farmhands, Youvani Velasquez and Rene Augustin, for recognition. When asked what farm features he’s proud of, he brings up its appearance from the point of view of the public road. “All the time, my farm looks good – its roads, the swales clean, the cut grass, the manure shed and the front and back pads, all of it.” He’s not shy about discussing the challenges a grower faces – rising costs of energy and equipment, and making the effort to understand the science behind the changes an integrator is urging. But it’s worth it, he says, because “I like agriculture. I like helping the community on the Eastern Shore.”
