this was just the most incredible scene when i was there looking at it. it's actually quite a steep descent. made me nervous just looking at it.
the historical plaque noted that, before they made this highway, a person could walk between those hills and touch both sides at the same time. the cost to expand it to freeway size was apparently quite expensive.
i believe those are the rockies in the background.
the san rafael swell. something like "spotted wolf" canyon, but i'll have to check and get back to you on that one.

these storms flanked us for a good hour, threatening to close in on us and destroy us. luckily for us, my wife turned on the hyperbooster and performed some amazing evasive maneuvers, allowing us to avoid them all together.

in retrospect, i've decided that eastern colorado is very different from western colorado, but not very different from, say...oh...the entire state of kansas.
that doesn't mean that i don't love seeing these marks of rural america lining the highway.

it sure was weird, driving along, quite slowly, with an entire lane open next to us, with only a little red x on the ceiling keeping us out of the lane.

there was just something special about the sunrise over the plains that morning. perhaps it was the massive thunderstorm forecast for that entire day right over our route.
i guess we can be grateful for that, even if the thought of having to drive through it scared the bejeebers out of us.

our son is hopelessly obsessed with trains. every time we saw one along the way, he would squeal and shout. if he saw train tracks (sans the locomotive), he would ask where the train was, and cry when we said it was probably somewhere else.
it got really old about 2 hours into the trip. way back in california. yesterday.
