~Montaña de Oro State Park~
Montaña de Oro AKA Mountain of Gold, the mountain is littered with these gold flowers everywhere. In the background 6 miles away, you can see Morro Rock. I placed a note on the photo where Morro Rock is at.

One final sunset on this eight day voyage down the Colorado River.
There is actually an annular eclipse of the sun at the time this photo was taken, but from this vantage point, I could not see more than a slightly flatter quality to the light. The sun as a ring of fire is probably visible a mile or two further downstream, but there was no way to hike to it in time from here. I'd never witnessed an annular eclipse before, and I can't say that I have now. Sigh. So close, and yet so far. All of the campsites on our trip were in the shade to keep us out of the heat. (I will do whatever I can to see the total eclipse through North America in 2017!!)
I did what I could with this beautiful little beach and the golden evening light. We actually slept out under the stars on beaches like this throughout the canyon. Such an incredible experience to look up in the pre-dawn hours and see the center of the galaxy overhead. (I don't have very good gear for night shots, but I attempted a few. I'll post them if any turn out OK.) In the morning, we took a quick raft trip to the helipad at mile 187.5 and were whisked back to civilization by helicopter. Quite an amazing way to exit the Grand Canyon!

Inside, the place manages to feel warm and peopled; Confronted with such vast expanses of lobby and hallway, the visitor's sense of scale quickly recalibrates, so that an enclosed area the size of a football field actually feels intimate; East to West wing is 1.3km, the Palace is in the centre; The central dome among 113 others is 60 meters high! I held the camera over the side of the raft for this abstract water trail shot. A hint of the golden reflection from the cliffs above is just visible in the top left corner.

Montana de Oro / Central Coast of Calif
***FULL VIEW IS A MUST***
A recent pic from the "mountain of gold" on a drab rainy evening. You can only shoot the same thing over and over again a couple thousand times before it gets old. So, I've been making the 45 min. drive to Montana de Oro pretty frequent.
Always impressive, here's a small bit of coastline in the southern regions, looking north. A 5 picture composite, panoramic- processed in Cs3.
