Devote one hour at the dusk, (like we did at 5 AM, during your sleepless vacation), to tour around the park, right off the campground! Meandering between the mound give you an amazing views in the Badlands, where you can be were blown away by this quietest place on earth, when you even cannot hear a cricket. The scenery is absolutely incredible, and image to be greeted by this surreal panorama of hoodoo mounds. You are touched by the sun kissing the hills, incredibly soft light creating stunning crevices on the side hills! This is a perfect time for a hike, when no mosquitoes are hunting you, so you can venture freely.

Long before Sweden was a nation and a Christian country, great men reigned from the area today known as Old Uppsala (Gamla Uppsala) which was both a political and religious centre. And here you can find the Royal mounds (Kungshögarna or just Gamla Uppsala högar, Old Uppsala mounds). Those buried here, in the 5th and 6th centuries, are not known. Folklore told that it was the gods Thor, Oden and Frey, and later historians guessed it was the kings of Swedes, Aun, Adil and Egil. But the truth is we just don't know.
This large 25 foot high geothermal wonder is one of my favorites at Mammoth Hot Springs. Easy to see how it got it's name. It can be found on the Upper Terrace Drive.

Southern giraffe (Giraffa giraffa), aka two-horned giraffe,] is a species of giraffe native to Southern Africa. It is one of the four species of giraffe recognized by the International union for the Conservaton of Nature (IUCN).

On a final swing through the Badlands NP in South Dakota - the section called Yellow Mounds offered a wonderful view to show off the many colors. The rain storm lifting added to the saturation of ground colors.
IR shot of a Neolithic burial mound overlooking the village of Avebury in South West England. Avebury itself is a Neolithic henge monument in the South West of England containing three stone circles likley to have been over 3000 years BC. One of the best known prehistoric sites in Britain, it contains the largest megalithic stone circle in the world. It is both a tourist attraction and a place of religious importance to contemporary pagans.
Constructed over several hundred years in the third millennium BC, during the Neolithic, or New Stone Age, the monument comprises a large henge (a bank and a ditch) with a large outer stone circle and two separate smaller stone circles situated inside the centre of the monument.
The Yellow Mounds in Badlands National Park are what geologists call a paleosol. Paleosols are ancient, fossilized soils preserved in the rock record, and they often appear as brightly colored layers like the Yellow Mounds, which gets its mustardy color from a mineral called Goethite.
As the sun sets on a pleasant January evening, the Chicago-bound Southwest Chief races across the desert at Wagon Mound, New Mexico.

A field of about 40 burial mounds on the Swabian Alb. Only a few hills are still visible. The hills were built between 800 and 450 BC. Even in the time before and after, the deceased were buried here.

A couple weeks ago a productive Saturday morning saw me make a chase of a U704 out of Dubuque into Northwest Illinois. I didn't know it until I got down around Galena, but there was a meet setup for Scales Mound, Illinois, which would make for a good chase back towards home as a follow-up.
In this view courtesy the aerial camera device, U704 rolls eastward through the picturesque town of Scales Mound on the main. Led by CN 2379, 2999, and 5469 the trio is working to lift the 98 car train up the grade it has been battling since they left the Mississippi River Valley 16 miles to the west. The former Illinois Central main follows the Galena River and it's forks through the scenic Northwest Illinois countryside as the route gains elevation. In what seemed like a pretty well-timed meet, U705 on the far track with CN 3151, 2236, and 8933 arrived only a few minutes ahead of the U704, just enough time to get locked into the siding and allow the dispatcher to keep the eastbound moving. In just a few minutes with the meet complete the U705 would get the light down the hill to continue west.
After Photographing the Milky Way the previous night, I forced myself to get out for the sunrise. I was so happy I did, as the colors of the sky were spectacular.
a small dry creek bed cuts through a section of the park known as Yellow Mounds, a group of hills known for their array of colors. Rolling mounds of reds, yellows and browns mixed with the occasional green vegetation makes this place especially photogenic.

After surviving for decades after their predecessors due to a whole host of circumstances, the Raton semaphores are likely on their final life. The inevitability of PTC will likely kill the remaining within a year, but for the time being they still rise and fall mechanically for the two daily trains on the line: Amtrak 3 and 4. Here, the northbound Chief passes one of the more photographed pairs just north of Wagon Mound.
Swinging through the curves coming into Mounds, Utah, is Union Pacific’s LJP45 local nearing the approach signal for the junction with the main line a trip back Helper on February 5, 2004. Rio Grande SD40T-2 Tunnel Motor No. 5390 leads the way, with Engineer Mel Baughman at the throttle and Steve McFarland in the conductor’s seat.

Rio Grande SD40T-2s No. 5390, 5349, and 5371 pull the “Dirt Train” up the Sunnyside Sub along Grassy Trail Creek the morning of Oct. 16, 2004. The Helper-based LJP45 became the last bastion of pure D&RGW tunnel motors on the Union Pacific Railroad.
Bacteria and algae create the streaks of color on Orange Spring Mound. It is noticeably different from many of the other terrace formations nearby. Its large mounded shape is the result of very slow water flow and mineral deposition.

After getting over the cancellation of the Manor working the 08.30 goods out of Keighley, and this after a 04.30 start from home and standing in some of the best light of the year, the sight of the visiting two locomotives working up from Damens to Oakworth at least made up for the early disappointment. Looking and sounding superb ex GWR Manor Class 4-6-0 No 7822 Foxcote Manor pilots ex SR Rebuilt Battle of Britain Class 4-6-2 No 34053 Sir Keith Park on the quickly arranged and delayed 09.15 service to Oxenhope. Despite the loss of the early run with the Manor and some late running thereafter full marks must go to all those at the KWVR for another most enjoyable autumn gala..many thanks. It was good to meet up with so many friends at 'the mound' and a first meeting at last with John Crawshaw.

Canadian National L506 pulls down the Mound City Branch back out to the Illinois Central main at Mounds after switching CGB. CN L506 works industries in Cairo, Mounds, and Mound City.
CN L506 switches Consolidated Grain & Barge in Mound City, Illinois with SD40-2W 5244 on point. L506 is a daily local out of the Illinois Central yard at Cairo handling switching duties at Cairo, Mounds, and Mound City. This day, their work was light, spotting about 20 loaded coke hoppers, pulling 8 empties, and dragging 3 motors (CN 8888, CN 3086, and IC 1034, which brought an empty grain train from Decatur for ADM at Mound City the night before) from the Mound City siding to the main at Mounds. After doing all this within 20 minutes, they were ready to shove back to Cairo Yard.
