Anyone who’s spent time in Southern Illinois recognizes this view: weathered pavement, open fields, and power lines that lead to the distance. This particular scene is Rt 161 between Belleville and New Baden, but the view is universal across towns like Marion, Makanda, and Metropolis. I’m featuring this as part of my "Visual Journey Across Southern Illinois" series. It’s been a joy to document these local landscapes as part of my phototreks across the state, and I hope it motivates you to make a phototrek as part of your routine. Architexturefotos — building stories one frame at a time!
I don't have a story for this one. It was one in a series of images I made.
But I hope you like it.

The Camargue National Reserve was founded in 1927 by the Societe Nationale de Protection de la Nature (National Society for Nature Protection). Classed as a Nature Reserve in 1975, this vast space spreads from the Étang de Vaccarès in the north, right down to the sea, but public access is limited to the seawall and the beach.
These protection efforts are motivated by the fact that the Camargue is a real animal paradise, especially for birds. More than 300 species have been documented here, the Camargue being one of the main European relay points for migratory birds.*

Nehemiah 8:10 NIV Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
John 16:22 NIV So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
These are called Resurrection Ferns. They were on the old Camphor Tree out front the first year I moved here (2013) and since cut down. I cannot for the life of me remember what happened that motivated my choice in this two verses way back then ... but I'm leaving them as is. God knows ...
Ray Hennessy (rayhennessy.com) and Scott Keys (@skeysimages) have awesome warbler shots. If you follow one, you are likely to follow the other for inspiration. Recently, Scott posted an older photo of a Blackburnian warbler. He talked about how difficult it was to photograph because these birds stay high in the trees far from eye level view. What Scott didn’t know was that his post motivated me to capture this beautiful warbler. Yes, I had seen them in the past, but nothing exciting in terms of a photo. What I didn’t realize was how tough this was going to be. So, after a grueling hike, and hanging off the side of a mountain, I present to you (or better yet, @skeyimages) my Blackburnian warbler, which I named Scott for effect. So glad the bird was happy to see me.

Can Love Return
We are all romantics, but a different scenario motivated this piece …
… we are in Buenos Aires and a couple decide to be professional tango dance partners … they fall madly in love ..
… Slowly their love turns to hate, but they are yoked together by their professional commitments…
… they dance while hating each other ...
... but …
… can love return?

France, Alsace, Strasbourg, “La Petite France”, is to be found on the „Grande Ill“, the main island, where the river Ill splits up into a number of canals & cascades through a small area of medieval “Fachwerkhäuser”, timber-framed houses & baroque sandstone buildings. In the Middle Age, the Petite-France was the tanning-houses, slaughterhouses & fishermen’s area. The most prominent building is directly at the channel & represents the tanner house, in the right centre on the photo, “Maison des Tanneurs”, built in 1572. Boats crossing La Petit France have to go into & leave through floodgates due to a roughly 4 mtr higher water level in this area.
The name “La Petite-France”, Little France, was not given for patriotic or architectural reasons. It comes from the "Hospice des Vérolés”, the hospice of the syphilitic, which was built in the late 15th century on this island, to cure persons with syphilis, then called the "French disease".
Strasbourg is situated on the Ill River, where it flows into the Rhine on the border with Germany, across from the city of Kehl on the German side.

Germany, “Altes Land”, a region sited downstream from Hamburg on the south-western side of the river Elbe, it is an area of 143 square km reclaimed marshland, spanning parts of Hamburg & Lower Saxony. “Altes Land”, which means "old country", however, it is a mistranslation of the original Low Saxon “Olland”, which originally had nothing to do with "old"; it stems from Holland & refers to the area's original colonization by Dutch settlers in the 12th Century which drained the land & cultivated it.
Drawbridges, windmills, the unique design of the elongated villages still reminds of the former settlers. Many of the richly-decorated half-timbered “Altländer” farmhouses are over 300 years old. Inscriptions, geometric patterns of mosaic tiles on the facades & magnificent decorative traditional gates are considered as status symbol of wealthy farmers.
The region is the biggest contiguous fruit-producing region in Central Europe, about 77% of the trees are apples, 13% are cherries. The fertile land led to the development of a culture dominated by farming, a special kind of villages where the farmyards are set along a street with the land directly behind them.
Tourism plays a major role, predominantly during the cherry blossom in May & apple blossom late May/June. However, unfortunately parts of the plantations are slowly being displaced by residential developments. Many of these new homes are then sold or rented to commuters who work in Hamburg.

China, Harbin, "Jile Temple", Temple of Bliss; built between 1921 & 1924 & is one of four famous Buddhist temples in the three provinces in north-eastern China & one of the most important Buddhist shrines in Harbin city.
In the centre, the over 30 mtr tall, seven-story pagoda dominates the temple, it has eight upturned attics & Buddhist pictures on the walls in each level. From the bottom to the top, it worships the bronze statues of Sakyamuni Buddha, Amitabha, Medicine Guru Buddha, Bodhisattva Manjusri, Samantabhadra, Kwanyin & Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva
The temple consist of the Mountain Gate built to resemble the Chinese character "山", meaning mountain, therefore the name "Mountain Gate", Hall of Heavenly King, Grand Hall, Sacred Hall, Sutra Depository, Bell Tower, Drum Tower & the Seven-storey Buddhist Pagoda are the main buildings. The buildings of the Jile Temple strictly follows the traditional Chinese temple style, every house was built of blue bricks & glazed coloured tiles.
There are similarities & differences in the shape, structure, ornament & arrangement among the buildings in Jile Temple.

China, Beijing, Temple of Heaven, Tiāntán, at nightfall in December.
The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, an example of the impressive art work & skilled craftsmanship already in ancient times.
The Tiāntán is considered the most holy of Beijing's imperial temples.
Roof Tiles & roof charms were of great importance in ancient Chinese Architecture. For imperial Architecture certain distinct features were exclusively reserved for buildings built for Chinese Emperors. These features were gold, yellow roof tiles & dragons, yellow colour has always been the imperial colour.
The Temple of Heaven is an exception, its rooftops is of blue colour which symbolizes the sky.
The Temple covers almost 3 km² of parkland & includes three main groups of constructions, all built according to stringent philosophical requirements, the main buildings are the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, 36 mtr in diameter & 38 mtr tall is built completely built of wood, without nails only with wooden dowels on three levels of marble stone base.
In 1889 the original building burned down by a fire caused by lightning, the current building was re-built several years after the incident.
The Temple of Heaven is declared since 1998 as an UNESCO World Heritage Site, constructed from 1406 to 1420 for sacrifices to Heaven during the Ming Dynasty in time of the sovereignty of the Yongle Emperor, who was also responsible for the building of the Forbidden City.
The temple was turned into a park & for the first time open to the public in 1918.
The Imperial Vault of Heaven, a single-gabled circular building, built on a single level of marble stone base & the Circular Mound Altar, located south of the Imperial Vault of Heaven.
Ancient Chinese architecture had reserved certain designs for people of different status. Aspects of the building such as height, colour, material & size of the house were all structured by law according to rank of the family living there.

China, Beijing, Food, Crustaceans, Sand Crab
Sand Crabs have sweet subtle flavour & generally have softer meat than Blue Swimmer Crabs.
They can be stored on Ice or refrigerator for up to 24 hours, but they test best when consumed immediately, if boiled, steamed, grilled or BBQ.
The Sand Crabs habitat is found in sandy silty areas including along surf beaches.
The all year around seasonal Sand Crabs have sharp claws & should be handled using gloves or pliers & then tied with a strip of fabric.
They minimum legal length is 10 cm measured across the carapace from side to side.
The daily catch p/person is limited to 20 units, combined with Blue Swimmer Crabs.
Restrictions: Females with external eggs are totally protected & must be returned to the water immediately, like all undersize crabs
In South Australia, the Sand Crab is common throughout many ocean beaches & the southern areas of Gulf, St Vincent & Spencer Gulf.

Japan, Meat, Poultry, Yakimono, culinary temptations, Yakimono, “Kushiyaky” are dishes using mainly beef, pork, poultry, seafood, vegetables or tofu are some of the most common foods prepared on a skewers & either grilled on fire or pan-fried.
The term “Yakimono” refers to a dish cooked over direct heat: “yaki” means “grilled” or “fried,” & “mono” means “thing, item.”
Mainly, there are 3 kinds of Yakimono in Japanese cuisine;
📍 Kushiyaki, grilled with skewers,
📍 Jibiyaki, directly grilled on fire,
📍 Kansetsuyaki, indirectly grilled, marinated or salt crusted grilled skewers.
It is believed that yakimono was invented by soldiers who impaled chunks of meat on their swords & stuck them into a fire. A typical yakimono dish is prepared as small pieces of food on bamboo skewers, the most famous of these dishes in the West being “Yakitori”, grilled chicken skewer.
Most yakimono dishes are served piping hot, as an appetizer or as a part of a larger course of appetizers. There are also some other popular yakimono dishes that are not skewered, such as gyoza, pan-fried dumplings that are often filled with vegetables & pork, the basic type of yakimono is shioyaki, in which salt is coarsely sprinkled over the food before grilling.

Avhal turned from his display, his face shadowed. “K’hall,” he said, voice low and grim. “Transmission from Axiom12. Axiom5’s distress call was interrupted. All contact lost. Sensors indicate she’s broken up. Mass casualties expected. Axiom12 will reach the escape pods in ten sectors.”
Bext’s hand flew to her mouth, eyes wide with silent horror.
K’hall didn’t move. Then slowly, he turned to Avhal. “I have failed them,” he said, “The attack wasn’t stopped in time.” The words trailing off.
He stared into the void ahead, mind racing—how fast it must’ve come, how final. Had the Council escaped? Had the two humans survived? Had the last thread of the Ikhon bloodline on Earth had just been extinguished?
“Bext,” he said quietly, “time to target?”
She swallowed, voice cracking. “Fifteen sectors. All systems green. Weapons at full capacity. Portal coordinates locked. No intel on their defenses.”
“They will be ready,” K’hall muttered, jaw clenched. “Lizards always are. Be ready to target any missiles they send our way.”
He grabbed the comm. “Ramva3, 4, 19—same formation as before. Line up behind us. Stay tight. Attack run begins now.”
He plunged the orb so it was skimming the desert floor. The other three following.
Avhal’s screen flared. “Incoming. Fighter jets—fast on intercept. Vector 195 and above.”
K’hall growled. So much for surprise. “Ramva19,” he barked into the comm, “target the jets the moment they’re in range.”
Oam’ka’s voice crackled back. “Weapons locked. Ready to fire.”
Sirens screamed across the portal complex. They were already on full alert. K’hall and his attack group were well below the reptilian radar, but the fighter jets had alerted them of the approaching attack. The defense crews weren’t able to get a lock on the low flying orbs but they had every weapon aimed in the direction reported by the jets. All eyes were focused and waiting to launch the counterattack.
K’hall’s voice sliced through the comms. “Ramva3, 4, 19—prepare to break right. Then loop hard back. On my mark… 3, 2, 1—BREAK HARD!”
“3, 2, 1—BREAK LEFT! —Bext, now! FIRE!”
There wasn’t time to redirect the defenses. Energy beams tore through the air. Missiles detonated before launch. The portal, split cleanly in two, collapsed in a cascade of fire and metal.
Ramva19 downed two jets instantly. But a third struck back and scored a hit. Remva19 impacted the ground and swerved from the impact. Oam’ka’s voice crackled. “We are hit.”
Ramva3 vaporized the remaining two jets.
The remainder of the complex erupted in a sea of fire—tactical nuclear missiles intended for defense exploding on the ground. The entire site covered by a radioactive cloud.
K’hall’s voice sliced through the static. “Ramva19, report your status.”
Oam’ka’s reply came ragged, strained. “Direct hit. Hull breach—severe. Lower structure integrity unknown. Cabin pressure and life support compromised. Altitude restricted… we won’t make it to sky dock.”
K’hall banked hard, scanning the damage. “Ramva19, your lower third of your hull is torn away. The damage is too extensive. You will need to land—anywhere safe. We’ll stay close and extract your crew.”
The decision was made. But the fate of Axiom5 hung heavy in the silence.
