There I was, wondering how a book report on Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath” is supposed to help me crush a future job interview. Honestly, maybe I just think way too much.

About the 1934 LaSalle
In the 1920’s, General Motors (GM) competed against Ford’s “one size fits all” approach by building “a car for every purse and purpose.” GM’s Cadillac had become the market leader in both prestige and price. The LaSalle, first designed in 1927 by the talented Harley Earl, was the model to fit between the Cadillac and Oldsmobile brands. Following the success of the early LaSalle, Alfred P. Sloan, head of GM, promoted Earl to head a new design office: GM’s “Art and Color Section.” However, success began to wane as the Great Depression wreaked havoc on LaSalle sales.
In 1933 the LaSalle was scheduled for termination. Earl spotted an aircraft-inspired design on the drawing board of Jules Agramonte, a member of the Art and Color team. Immediately motivated, Earl and his team redesigned the LaSalle with new Art Deco features such as the tall, narrow front grill, pontoon fenders, biplane bumpers, portholes, chevrons, and chrome accents. Earl had a full-scale mockup built, and presented it to GM executives, proclaiming, “Gentlemen, if you decide to discontinue the LaSalle, this is the car you are not going to build.” GM quickly agreed to manufacture the beautiful new LaSalle, convinced it would revive sales and add excitement to their product line.
The 1934 LaSalle shared many aspects of its build with the Oldsmobile including, straight-8 engine components, frame, and transmission. Both cars also featured new, hydraulic brakes and a revolutionary independent front suspension, which Cadillac did not yet have. The LaSalle team was tasked with reducing production costs by 1/3 — a feat they achieved by sharing parts across model lines. The LaSalle was a design masterpiece, advertised as “the newest car in the world,” and was the pace car for the 1934 Indianapolis 500. LaSalle sales doubled for 1934 and continued to grow through 1936; however, as the US began to rise from the depths of the Depression, consumer demand trended away from such cars, toward smaller, less expensive brand models. By 1940, GM had finally conceded, cancelling production of the LaSalle.

Adrienne gathered a few things, having no idea what might be needed or for how long. She pulled on her sweatshirt, her mind still swimming with unanswered questions.
“Who are they—the men that are after me… us?”
Kayla met her gaze, her expression serious. “I’ll explain everything soon. But they’re not men. They only look that way so they can be among humans can hide what they really are. They can look any way they like”
Adrienne swallowed hard.
“Then… what are they?”
Kayla hesitated, just for a moment. “They’re descendants of the Earth’s original inhabitants. In their true form, they’re reptilian—very dangerous, cunning, and completely ruthless.” She exhaled sharply. “They want the power the VDD gives us, but the device doesn’t work for them. They need a jumper—like us—to operate it.”
Adrienne’s pulse quickened. “And you said I was ‘one of us.’ What does that mean?”
Kayla’s focus remained locked on the window, scanning the street outside. “Forget everything you think you know about history and the story of mankind. Our ancestors arrived on earth millions of years ago—long before recorded history. You’re living in the fourth great civilization. But the reptilians… they control almost everything again.”
“You, I, are both are of the ancient bloodline of the Jahri.”, continued Kayla. “Only people like us can access the power of the VDD”.
Before Adrienne could process the revelation, both girls sensed danger. Then the sudden creak of the back door shattered the moment.
Both girls spun around.
“They’re here!” Kayla hissed. “Time to jump. Take my hand—just like before!”
And in an instant, they vanished.

Today was one of those lazy days when it comes to photography, I kept putting off picking up the camera and finally as the light was starting to sink I figured I'd better get moving.
What better for a day of procrastinating than a photo of a motivator... that and I was a little stumped on inspiration and coffee is always a good model!
Anyway hope everyone has had a good day, and a Happy Independence Day to all my American friends!

The Finale
So you have probably been wondering what the days and weeks mean. It actually was not supposed to be this way. Starting back in February or March, I almost completely lost the will to post. I had images from October, November, and December that were in Lightroom that I had not even looked at since the day I took them. I had a camera roll and multiple notes filled with random photos, train symbols, and all sorts of information that had no meaning until I actually associated the information with something. It was also at this time I felt fairly discouraged. From December 23 to March 16, the day before I went out again, I had only been out twice. I believe February saw one single sunny, cloudless day in the Gorge this year, a day in which I had class. There was a day that called for sun and no clouds, and I actually drove out before sunrise, planning to shoot all day only to arrive in Hood River as the sun came up to a solid sheet of clouds. I turned right around and came home. February is up there as being on of my favorite months to shoot, and I expected multiple outings this year, only to come away with none.
So anyway, about a month ago, I thought I would motivate myself to edit and post the stuff I hadn’t looked at for a few months. As much as I wish I never had to post the images, I knew that if I saved up all my favorites at the same time, it would make the posting more interesting for me. I created a note that listed in order which images I would post and what needed to be said. The list was roughly 21 images, and I thought it would make sense to do one a day, so I opted to keep the title and everything the same as it is in my notes when I post here. I guess I felt the need to explain because I do not want anyone getting the wrong idea here. By no means do I think my images are any better than anyone else’s. It was simply for me to organize my thoughts and make it easier for me to actually share some of my adventures with you all. There are plenty of amazing photographers that have come before me and who will come after me, and as someone who has only been shooting for about 4 years now, I have a long way to go before I have the right to make any claims about what’s good and what’s bad. I like looking at cool stuff, you like looking at cool stuff, and that is exactly how I want to keep it. If you made it this far, let’s add some context to what exactly you are looking at.
This is BNSFs Oregon Trunk Subdivision. Minus all the CTC upgrades within the last few years, this whole piece of railroad feels a bit like a time capsule. Estimates in the early 2000s put the traffic levels for this line somewhere in the teens or low 20s, numbers that are nowhere in sight today, and quite frankly, numbers that will never exist. The line, running south out of Wishram, WA to Chemult, OR, where it meets with the UP Cascade Subdivision, sees about 4-6 trains a day. Seeing trains in good light on this line is incredibly challenging. There is a reason that this shot, which is fairly accessible to anyone who hikes and is not afraid of heights, is scarcely seen given how photogenic it is. If the searchlights and pole line were not removed, this line would almost feel a bit like Raton is now. The road into here is actually the old ROW for the competing company (backed by Edward Harriman) that built along the eastern side of the Deschutes River Canyon. You can find abandoned infrastructure in a few places in the canyon.
Within the first 71 miles, there are 3 sidings, 2 real ones. The first siding, being Moody at MP5, is 4329 feet and has rarely ever been used. The first real siding is Oakbrook at MP38.4, being 6232 feet in length. Dixon, at MP 70, is 5469 feet, and the sidings continue from here at regular 20 mile or so intervals all the way to Chemult. Every train through here is very short, almost every single one is a manifest, and the speeds are very slow. A few more trains per day and it would almost be perfect. What you are looking at is a location known as the Twin Bridges. Instead of following the curvature of the Deschutes, the railroad crosses the river, through a tunnel, and then crosses it again immediately upon leaving the portal. The train originated from the ballast pit at “Missile Base”, a location on the Lakeside Sub. It is running to the yard at Lookout, CA, presumably for a maintenance project on the Gateway. This is, perhaps, about as peaceful a rail line you will find.
As for the current Favorites Series, it will be something I continue in the future, but this will be it for a little bit. All I have is worthless junk again, some of which I will throw around here and there. It has been fun. Thanks for viewing. Until next time.

The Hohenzollern Castle – a subject photographed thousands of times, a symbol of history and majesty. What drives someone to return to this place again and again, camera in hand, searching for the perfect moment? I may never fully answer this question for myself, but one thing is certain: the fascination remains unbroken.
With such an iconic subject, the challenge lies in finding something unique. Something that hasn’t already been captured countless times. Perhaps it’s precisely this pursuit that motivates me – the attempt to reveal the unseen.
My work often begins when the day visitors have long made their way home. When tranquility sets in, and only a few like-minded souls remain, quietly chasing their photographic dreams. It’s the time when you become one with your craft and the surrounding nature. When dusk slowly yields to night, the air grows cool, and the first stars appear in the sky.
The magic of this moment lies not only in the subject itself but in the experience. The cold creeping through your clothes is a reminder of how alive you can feel. The silence, broken only by the wind or a distant call, brings a profound connection to the here and now. And when the camera captures the moment – whether it’s the last ray of sunlight bathing the castle in warm light or the sea of mist draping itself like a veil over the hills – a deep sense of contentment arises. A feeling that words can hardly describe but that fills the heart.
It’s these moments that keep drawing me back here. The hope of finding and capturing something special once more – and perhaps, in doing so, sharing a bit of that joy with others.

hit “L” for a more spectacular view!
This is a verse from the Bible I discovered a while ago and I always wanted to use it for a photo of mine. I think it is obviously why I choose the title for this shot. There is the “Brandenburger Tor”, the most known gate of Germany and there is the Quadriga which looks as if they want to enter the gate in all their Glory. To emphasize the effect of entering something with glory and speed I used the Radial Blur Filter in Photoshop.
It wasn’t easy to not destroy the image with it but I think the effect turned out pretty well.
As I look at the image my eyes get really dizzy! What do you think? Is the image Top or Flop?
Also I decided to talk a bit on statistics on this image.
Lately a lot of my contact hit the 100.000 views mark. I am really proud of you. The reason why I want to share statistics with you is not that you think “how cool is he” or “man what an ass”.
The reason is motivation.
I want to motivate you to set a goal for 2012 and pursue it. I hit the 100.000 views exactly two years ago. A month ago I hit the 1.000.000 views. It wouldn’t have been without you that I could have reached this. So of course I am really thankful for all of you supporting me and viewing my Images.
If you are good in mathematics you see that it took me nearly two years to reach 1.000.000 views.
As I sat down and started my Flickr vision for 2012 I thought what do I want to achieve this year. After thinking a while I thought to change the two years into one year and the 1.000.000 into 2.000.000.
This means I actually need 2.000.000 views this year which is approximately 5479 views each day :-).
I really don’t know how I should do this but at the end of the year I will let you know if I was able to achieve this.
Again I want to motivate you to set your goals for 2012. If you are like me making crazy plans which cannot be achieved without much luck please write your Flickr goals for 2012 into the comment section.
I am really interested to see what you are planning.
Please remember that we are not competitors but friends . If your goal is to reach one view each day let me know. I am really interested to see it!

Evening light on the Palace of Culture and Science, Warsaw, Poland.
From Wikipedia:
The Palace of Culture and Science (Polish: Pałac Kultury i Nauki; abbreviated PKiN) is a notable high-rise building in central Warsaw, Poland. With a total height of 237 metres (778 ft), it is the second tallest building in both Warsaw and Poland (after the Varso Tower), the sixth tallest building in the European Union and one of the tallest in Europe. At the time of its completion in 1955, the Palace was the eighth tallest building in the world, retaining the position until 1961; it was also the tallest clock tower in the world until the installation of a clock mechanism on the NTT Docomo Yoyogi Building in Tokyo, Japan.
Motivated by Polish historical architecture and American art deco high-rise buildings, the Palace of Culture and Science was designed by Soviet-Russian architect Lev Rudnev in "Seven Sisters" style and is informally referred to as the Eighth Sister.
The Palace houses various public and cultural institutions such as theatres, cinemas, libraries, university faculties and authorities of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Surrounding the building are a collection of sculptures representing figures of the fields of culture and science, with the main entrance featuring sculptures of Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, by Ludwika Nitschowa, and Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz, by Stanisław Horno-Popławski. Since 2007, the PKiN has been enlisted in the Registry of Objects of Cultural Heritage.

Shooting has been incredible lately. I feel like there is a new force pushing me along. It is overcast today so I'll be out shooting for most of it, and I can't wait. I've never felt so motivated to pick up my camera and click.
Over a year ago I did a photo using fake snow, and I said to myself that i'd never use fake snow again in place of fake cobweb...but when it came down to it, I had a ton of fake snow this year (I was trying to emulate the christmas spirit as seen in Pennsylvania) so I had to put it to use :)

China, Shanghai, Zhujiajiao, a waterway in the "Water Town" on the outskirts of Shanghai in the Qingpu District is not only well-known throughout China. With a history of more than 1,700 years, the little fan-shaped town being regarded as Shanghai's Venice established about 1,700 years ago, archaeological findings dating back 5.000 years.
The historical centre of Zhujiajiao, built on a peninsula enclosed by the rivers Dianpu He & the Cao He; these are rivers flowing from west to east, which been converted into transport channels over the centuries, "Cao He" means "river for the water transport of grain".
Middle-class people built two- to three-story "row houses" along these canals from around the 16th century, on the other side of which roads for carts ran. On the ground floor of these whitewashed & grey-tiled houses, there was usually a shop or workshop open to the street, while a veranda facing the canal, often with stone steps to the water.
Zhujiajiao, literally meaning "Village of the Zhu Family", since "Zhu Yuanzhang", the founder of the subsequent Ming dynasty, also came from the Zhu clan, the name was tabooed & the place in Zhujiege, "Pearl Market", or Zhuxi, "Pearls Brook", renamed, the same pronunciation, but different characters & different meanings.

there are two basic motivating forces: fear and love. when we are afraid, we pull back from life. when we are in love, we open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance. we need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections. if we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create. evolution and all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.

Italy, Venice, Italy, illustrator drawing a sketch of the Canal Grande at the corner of the vegetable market near the Ponte Rialto.
The lagoon city hides many picturesque places offside the tourist roads. If the buildings would be straight, painted & well maintained, I think Venice without this patina, the gondolas & gondolieri, channels, little bridges & the at all-time busy Canal Grande; all these main ingredients altogether express the romantic charm of Venice.

China, Beijing,…autumn sunset over the Forbidden City, the “Zǐjinchéng”, in China now it is usually called Gùgōng, is the centre of Beijing. The Palace was for 276 years, 1368 –1644 the Chinese imperial palace from the Ming Dynasty & until the end of the Qing Dynasty, established in 1636 & ruling China from 1644 to 1912.
Built from 1406 to 1420, was it the home to twenty-four Chinese emperors, from the Ming dynasty & 1420 until the end of the Qing dynasty before the abdication of Puyi in 1912. The Palace served as the home of emperors, their family circle, as well as the ceremonial & political centre of Chinese government for over 500 years.
The 980 buildings complex with officially 9.999 rooms, as a room is considered the space between four pillars. The palace represents traditional Chinese impressive architecture, it influenced cultural & architectural developments in East Asia.
The whole complex was built without a nail or a screw only with dowels & interlacing, the general renovation which started in 2002 is done with same technics & craftsmanship as in past hundreds of years & will need a couple of more years, by the year 2020, 85% by 2020 to be finalized & open to the public. During the imperial centuries it was forbidden to build any house higher than the Palace buildings, hence during thunderstorms it was the main object in Beijing to be hit by lightning
After the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, some damage was done to the Forbidden City as the country was flounced up in revolutionary fanaticism during the Cultural Revolution. However, further destruction was prevented when Ordered by Mao Zedong, the Premier Zhou Enlai, sent an army battalion to guard the Forbidden City to prevent further devastation.
Zhou Enlai was the first Premier of the People's Republic of China, Mao Zedong was the Chairman, founding father & intellectual leader of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.
The Imperial Palace, built in only 14 years from 1406 to 1420, is a rectangle covering 720,000m2 with 961 mtr from north to south & 753 mtr from east to west. Crossing the Forbidden City through to the Tiananmen Gate, which is decorated with a portrait of Mao Zedong, the forecourt & the Meridian Gate to the north gate on Jingshan Hill it is a length of slightly more than 1,5 km. The Forbidden City is enclosed by a 7,9 mtr high & 6 mtr wide defensive wall, which has a circumference of 3,430km, surrounded by a 52 mtr wide ditch.
The Forbidden City is documented as one of the most important five palaces in the world, with an area of 72ha it is the largest & ancient palatial structure in the world
The palace is 960 mtr long & 750 mtr wide, has formally 9,999 rooms, a room being the space between four pillars. The Forbidden City is enclosed by an almost 8 mtr-high defensive wall, which has a circumference of 3,430km.
Since 1925, the Forbidden City has been under the charge of the Palace Museum, whose extensive collection of artwork & artefacts were built upon the imperial collections of the Ming & Qing dynasties.
Approximately 15 million tourists visit the palace every year.
About 25% of the museum's former collection is since the Chinese Civil War located in the National Palace Museum in Taipei, both museums descend from the same institution.

I cannot believe another year is almost done and we are getting ready to welcome in 2023. Looking back on this year photographically it was a pretty good year for me. My wife and I traveled 6700 miles to Montana and back with our camper and (after the first two days of 'getting used to camping') LOVED IT!! We saw so much of this beautiful country and cannot wait to head out on a "Bucket List" trip of mine in another year or so. If any of you dream to travel this country by driving and camping I suggest don't put it off! I wish I had done it 15 years earlier when my body wasn't being eaten up by arthritis so I could climb some higher mountains.
I know this is a time of the year where I look back on things and remind myself how lucky I am to have this passion for photography which motivates me to want to see new places and make new friends! I am grateful for everyone here on Flickr that takes the time to read my (sometimes silly) comments and comment back. I look forward to many more journeys ahead in 2023 and wish the best for you all also!!
I also look forward to meeting up with a few of you again, and maybe for the first time!
Here's to a Happy and Healthy 2023 for everyone!!
