Too many people complain about things without having any idea as to what to do fix the challenge that exists. They are in a mindset in which it is all too easy to criticize, but they aren’t able to offer anything that would help to deal with the next steps.

It’s better to be a fixer than a whiner!

Take a look at the things you’ve done in the last month. Did you mostly complain? What solutions and ideas did you offer up? What barriers did you put in the way of innovative ideas? Where did you suggest that the status quo is good enough?

At one moment did you move from being a person of action to be a barrier in the pathway to progress?

Sometimes, it takes a conscious and deliberate effort to admit that you have a problem with personal creativity. The first step is to recognize it and admit it. Once you do that, the rest doesn’t necessarily come easy, but it’s a pathway to eventual progress.

How do you do it? Try to accelerate your curiosity!

Be like Curious George!

I’ve always liked the children’s book series which involved Curious George and the Man in the Yellow Hat. It was fabulous to read to my kids, as it featured this adorable little monkey who was always thinking about things, and always ended up getting into trouble as a result. It made me think about the link between curiosity and future trends and innovation.

That’s why I was quite intrigued when I recently came across a study released by Merck — what they called their “First International Curiosity Study” — which featured some not-so-unsurprising results.

- more than 8 out of 10 people from Germany, the US and China agreed that “a curious person is more likely to bring an idea to life at work”

- even so, the majority did not describe themselves as innately curious– only 20% did!

- instead, the majority described themselves as ‘organized, collaborative and detail-oriented’

-curiosity came in 12th place on a list of attributes! (funny and talkative beat out curiosity, if you can believe it!)

was in London for barely 36 hours on the weekend, returning from my keynote in Oman. It’s still an exhilarating city - and like everyone, I’m fascinated by its scope, size, speed, complexity.

And of course, the Tube!

Of course, I immediately began thinking about the “Mind the Gap’ phrase you hear on the Tube. It works on so many different levels - a disruption gap, competitors gap, knowledge gap and more!

Too many organizations and people let the gap between their reality and the speed of change become too large, too much of a chasm.

So I began working the phrase. And at 2am this morning, jet lagged and awake (it’s 11am in Oman), I was running through a variety of words that might work with “Mind the Gap”. I hit upon the perfect one, but then fell back asleep! I lost it!

And so now, I’ve hit upon this one. Whatever. It works!

The photo is from a keynote in I did in London just over 2 years ago for Pladis, a global organization which includes Godiva Chocolates under its umbrella.

The slide on screen is appropriate - I’m talking about the speed of product and R&D innovation in our world today. Simply put, if you can’t keep up with your competitors and disruptors - if you can keep up the momentum - the implications are bigger than ever before.

Do you challenge yourself with respect to your innovation velocity? Your speed of ideas? Have you established an accelerated culture of creativity? In a world in which the future belongs to those who are fast, it matters!

“Out of difficulties grow miracles.” — Jean de La Bruyère

This Monday let’s be very plain about corporate wear. Plain shirts are any corporate executive’s best friend. And yes, they never go out of vogue, and you can pair them with different types of pants, the way you prefer. In this, you can opt for several collar designs including Tap Collar, Button-down Collar, Chinese Collar, and Windsor spread collar—all adding charm to your personality.

“It is by going down into the abyss that we recover the treasures of life. Where you stumble, there lies your treasure.” – Joseph Campbell

You needn’t go down into the abyss of formal office wear. You just have to get yourself a proper tailored suit. Here’s what I mean—a unique, adorable and classy suit designed with modern suit standard and specifics in mind. Designed with high quality cashmere wool fabric, it features fitted silhouette suit jacket, notch lapels and is fully lined having single vent. This stylish two-piece suit is single breasted, and comes complete with a slim-fit pant trouser.

"People will stare. Make it worth their while." —Harry WinstonDo people actually judge you based on your dressing style or clothes? The hard truth is “YES.” There lies a psychology behind people judging you by the way you dress up. They think what you wear tells about your personality. And they start with stereotyping as well. So, think of how you’re going to give an impression to people who’re judging you. Remember, if you groom yourself well, people will not only stare but listen!

Here's something that can help you to kick-start your Monday.

For some people in the world, tomorrow is a celebratory day; for many other religions, their day of celebration falls on a different day. Regardless of the timing, the season can be, for many, a time of joy, marked by tradition and family. It is a season that can bring out the goodness in mankind.

Yet for many others, it is a time of stress, worry, fear, loneliness and pain. For some, it can be a stressful series of days to get through, particularly as they witness all kinds of celebratory excess that often goes wrong.

And with today comes the frantic activities of those for whom procrastination is an art form, and for whom Amazon Prime is no longer a viable option! The stress multiplies!

Need a last minute gift? You’ll probably find one - but also consider adding another item to your basket! For some people, the best gift this season is not a ‘thing’ or an ‘item’ - it’s an action, a behaviour, an attitude, a way of living that brings joy to the hearts of those around them!

You might also consider the gift of rethinking your world view. 2018 seemed to be year that was marked by the continued emergence of the hateful and the spiteful, fuelled by the mind of a man who delights in denigrating and insulting everyone around him. With that, we’ve seen the worse of the so-called ‘Religious Right,’ exposed for the shallow hypocritical thinking of their racist worldview.

2018? We have seen a world with babies locked up in jails. Many of those who supposedly support the religious idea of Christmas have been active supporters of such an agenda. Go figure.

I prefer to go back to the spiritual roots of the season - it is a time to believe in the opportunities of renewal.

Perhaps we might see the arrival and engagement of a greater number of people with real ethical and moral values, who help to make the world a better place.

Perhaps that might be you, with your own relentless optimism.

People are aware of many disruptive trends, but then go into denial as to their likelihood of happening. I see it all the time.

They then complain when the future happens. Perhaps, deep inside they are wishing for some relief from change; they silently hope that time stands still; that progress won’t march on.

Yet the future doesn’t hold back. It’s relentless, unstoppable, a force of nature as inviolable as mass, gravity and light.

Why fight it’s reality?

But people do, and the consequences become all too harsh - business models disappear, products become obsolete, brand propositions blow up, new competitors steamroll the old structure; other nations innovate while you stand still.

Inevitability should drive many of your decisions and actions. Otherwise, you’ll spend more time looking back with regret, and less time looking forward for opportunity!

As an aside, I was in the pool thinking of this quote today, ready to start the search for an image to go with it. Then I opened my laptop, and there was a message withs some wonderful photos from my Las Vegas keynote last month!

And so a big shoutout to Pure Light Images/Laurie DeWitt for the fabulous picture - there’s a few more which I will use in the months to come. She obviously does wonderful work - and if you need a great photographer, you can reach out to her at purelightimagesphoto@gmail.com, or via

When it comes to New Years Eve, many people focus on the celebrations that will occur later tonight.

I like think about the year that has gone past, and the years yet to come! For a futurist, New Years Eve is always a moment for quiet reflection, because it signals the end of another year within our overall trends horizon.

So what was one of the biggest trends I saw in 2018? The importance of a future oriented attitude! Mindset!!!! I think I used the phrase “mindset matters” a lot on stage during the year.

As the world speeds up, change accelerates and volatility begins to rock our daily lives, I noticed that a greater number of executives who are booking me to speak at their events want a message, not just on the trends of tomorrow, but one inbmued with hope on what the future might bring.

That’s because people are feeling battered and bruised by the current climate of anti-science, anti-progress, anti-diversity, and anti-hope.

The Jetsons, quite frankly, are tried of the the Flintstones around them. They need to have a reminder that in the long run, their world of progressive reality will supersede the world of fake disbelief.

And so with that my bookings take me more into the path of being a “motivational futurist.” A seer of tomorrow who inspires a sense of hope with what comes next.

People don’t want a motivational speaker with a simple message that all you need to do is walk on fire! That’s like Chinese food - an hour later, you forget what you heard!

They want a motivational message that is aligned to the realities of what will occur tomorrow. They want a message that combines detailed insight on future trends with a message on the attitudes, actions and activities that will get them there.

They want a pathway to real success based on unfolding realities, rather than simply a hopeful message of inspiration. They want concrete and substantive information, rather than wishy-washy feel-good fluff.

They want mindset!

Hey, there’s a polar vortex over my house! It’s awesome - but did yuo notice that the vortex also brings a lot of sunshine once the storm clears? That’s the nature of what happens with a massive dose of bone-chilling cold. It’s awesome!!!!! With that, on my series of 19 Trends for 2019. Today, #14 today is: “The end of oil!” jimcarroll.com/2019/01/19-trends-for-2019-14-the-end-of-oil/

Catch up with the list so far: 2019.jimcarroll.com

Simple truth: the science, cost decline & adoption of solar, batteries, EV’s and other alternatives to carbon are accelerating. Oil, gas, coal: they’ve had their day. Political idiocy can’t change that reality. The implications? There is hope yet!

Some of my 19 trends for 2019 aren’t profound, in that people are already aware of them. What is important is acknowledging the speed and reality of trend. So here’s the thing: despite the current moment of political idiocy around us involving 19th century disruption such as coal, there is one undeniable fact going into the future : oil is over.

As the CEO of one global energy company said on stage before my keynote for a global energy conference, “we have one last oil boom left. Then that’s it.” Oil will always be with us, but it is now on the decline and alternatives are clearly on the ascendant.

The acceleration of the science that leads to the end of oil is undeniable. Batteries EV’s, solar, wind, biomass – you name it, and in the long run, science wins.

I like the sunshine concept as a motivational tool as well - we all love the sun. It’s even great when it is overhead while you are skiing in the midst of a massive polar vortex! Sunshine is life! People will always find solace in the warmth and comfort of the sun.

You can never stop chasing the sun. Have a bad day? Find the sun. Feeling a little pessmistic? Find your sunshine.

Some people suffer from SAD - and that’s sad! But inevitability the reason for their disorder ceases to be as spring takes hold!
