Mount Laguna North view. Weather is changing rapidly. This high peak is a perfect location for communications towers; now the tower has four "webcam" hpwren cameras, for a 360-degree view; this image was taken at sunrise, elevation 6,300 ft (1920m) -- the rising sun hitting the clouds creates this rare sight.

In continuing exploration into motion tracking using flash and a webcam I've created an application that enables you to track multiple objects based on color. The holy grail of the application is of course to track multiple objects without specifying color. However, this is a good step forward and actually opens up many other avenues for use. Color, after all, is ubiquitous.

The truly useful part of the code is getColorBoundsRect. If you're unfamiliar with this function, it determines a rectangular region that either fully encloses all the pixels of a specified color within a BitmapData object, or fully encloses all pixels that do not include the color. The function returns a rectangle around the color area. You can then reference this rectangles x and y respectively.

var areaColor:Rectangle = SomeBitmapData.getColorBoundsRect( 0xFFFFFFFF, _colorArray[i].color, true );

The function is rather finicky about the depth of where the object is. Since it's only searching for a certain RGB value it tends to lose it if the lighting or the object gets too small in the camera's depth of field. To overcome this you could search for similar colors. Soulwire has written a sweet Color utility class that can aid you in this endeavor. However, searching for a range of colors will also come with it's challenges, as the more range of color you search on the tougher it will be to pinpoint the exact object you want to track.

Check out the demo here: Tracking Multiple Objects Using a Webcam [webcam obv required]

Hpwren is a new system of communication and live view webcams on high peaks in San Diego, California. Each site has 4 cameras to enable a 360-degree view -- and in some cases it can be a video or time-lapse! More info? hpwren.ucsd.edu/ . If you have the time and patience to browse archived images, you find some interesting moments captured.... wildlife, weather, even the beginning of a wildland fire or two.

This is an orange shot in my bathtub using chdk, motion detection & flash during video.

it didnt really turn out as expected, but this was more or less a concept shooting and to betatest the software.

here is actual video footage: www.flickr.com/photos/phyrephox/3090348567/

strobist: strobist: one sb24 bounced off the ceiling, two sb26 camera left & right onto subject

In this video you can see CHDK in action.

In video mode, i started the motion detection script, which then fired as soon as motion was detected. by using the external flashguns i was able to properly light the scene.

my setup is crappy, should have put another background. plus, the whitebalance in the video is set to flash (so the pics would come out right), i am working on a feature to overcome this.

strobist: one sb24 bounced off the ceiling, two sb26 camera left & right onto subject

next video will be much better, or so i hope

in my stream there are some actual results of this shooting

oh and yes, sometimes the cam was firing and sometimes not - i guess this is because it isnt really optimized for being used WHILE shooting video. maybe it also is an energy issue, as the cam also isnt really prepared for firing flash...

btw the flashes were triggered by on-camera flash

shutter speed - around 10k

The FlexiForce Herkules 2 sends a signal to the operator when an object approaches the door.

You have to admire a job that allows you to make a bumble-bee/owl (a bumblowl?) fly around a mural merely by waving your finger... all while drinking beer.

This is an elaboration on my actionscript webcam motion detection experiments, built as an installation for the Inverge party hosted by North. The idea was to take motion detection and combine it with art in the form of digital drawing and 2d space in the form of a wall mural. The concept is to allow human interaction to affect physical space, freeing oneself from all traditional user interface. The application works by constantly monitoring a webcam, taking snapshots of each frame every millisecond. The pixels in the current frame are compared to pixels in the previous. The difference in brightness within each section determines whether or not motion had occurred in this area of the screen. If motion is detected the coordinates of a rectangular grid around said motion is recorded and the owl is ordered to go to that point. The line drawings begin and follow the owl recording a 'flight path'. A mask is drawn to prevent the owl and its drawing trail from going in front of some of the trees giving the mural a sense of dimension.

Thanks to the great Eric Natzke for the drawing inspiration and open source, and NORTH for being forward thinking enough to encourage digital experimentation.

To try a version of the experiment for yourself, go here: AS3 Motion Detection Drawing Installation. [webcam a must, obv]

Air show in the living room! (see it large)

This is a composite of several images taken with the CHDK motion detection script. The motion detection script is a script that takes a picture when the image in front of the camera changes.

I flew (well, more like suggested the direction) the helicopter in front of the camera and CHDK did the rest. I then combined the frames that actually contained the helicopter into one image (I did get some other frames with the heli but the overlap made for a confusing image). I got about a 50-50 ratio of images with the helo and without.

This is an “Air Hog Havoc Heli Lazer Battle,” heli, with infra red remote control. The "control" part is somewhat misleading, but you can recommend the direction in which the heli should fly.

As far as script parameters go, I used Shot=0 and left the rest at their defaults. The camera was set for manual focus, and I did add the "shoot_half" line recommended for the A590.

The images were saved as DNGs then developed and composited in PSCS3.

You have to load the firmware every time you power on your camera unless you run a script that autoloads it. It is really fast and easy to load.

Lightning Over Bangkok Docks

1 of 2 (Note the times) -- Signs of the weather change I was watching for, taken the same morning as the shot below. They were very fast-moving, unwavering in their run South to North.

Looking North from the 6300' level of Mount Laguna, into the Anza-Borrego Desert at sunrise. This hpwren (webcam") image captures the beauty of these southern California mountains, at an incredibly beautiful time of day. I love living near the ocean, but I don't fail to see the incredible beauty of the desert. As a teenager I drove my old pickup around 'down' there, and camped out under the stars. That has sadly all changed, but I haven't lost my love for the desert.

The images are taken every 2 minutes. And incredibly, I find that the image taken before, and after this one, are 'nothing special'. And I'm seeing this time and again, in this case sunrises and 'in weather' -- clouds, rain, sun, etc.. To a photographer, capturing the moment can be very elusive.... I learned his long ago, I'm sure you have too. But in Iooking thru dozens (even hundreds) of these webcam images I'm becoming even more aware that you may only have one chance to get that perfect shot, and that requires staying on your toes. I'm not satisfied with how I've explained this. But you'll be seeing some examples in photos I'll be uploading following this.

With some images, I've adjusted the contrast color and/or saturation.

The hpwren cameras are part of a far-reaching project involving the University of California at San Diego; my interest is the webcam images taken from peaks all around my "home grounds" of San Diego County, in far-southern California. This is a gif animation showing a trippy effect from visual science called four stroke motion in combination with the motion parallax depth effect.

This is essentially composed of the two frames of a normal stereophoto, alternating. Except that for every other alternation, the contrast reverses. The switch from right to left eye's image induces a sense of rightward rotation, and then the switch back to right eye's image should induce the opposite rotation direction, but the contrast inversion reverses that.

The result is a trippy illusion of continuous motion superimposed on the normal back and forth wiggle of these images.

If you get sick, go watch something else instead.
