It was another early day at the office this morning. Once again, I loaded up the dolly track, etc., etc. and hauled everything over to the EESAT building. Courtney was over there and helped us out with setup, which was a lovely surprise. She’s still trying to move into her new place, but she was in good spirits.
Today’s shot was somewhat technical, but it came out pretty good. One of these days we’ll have enough video people so that one can operate camera, another can operate the jib/dolly, and a third can pull focus. One day.
My thumb had a big nasty bubble by the nail this morning from yesterday’s cast iron burn fiasco. I was setting up a c-stand this morning when I noticed my thumb suddenly felt kinda wet. I looked down and the bubble had completely deflated. I must have bumped something. Anyway that was disgusting.
This afternoon I finally finished my WaterTower project! I’m actually kinda proud of how that one came out.
Emily and I tried the new English pub on the square. It’s completely mediocre, probably less so than Abbey Inn was, BUT in their defense, the place is barely even open at this point. The owner seemed like a nice dude. He told us a story about when he took his 3 month old to a Stars game. The kid had a blowout all over him before the end of the first period, and that’s when he knew his life was going to be different.

An extract from the audiovisual live performance 'Synaesthetic Insula', produced in 2008 for the festival 'Panta Rei', held in Capri, (IT).
Starting from pictures of the wonderful Mediterranean island of Capri, captured by Massimo Esposito, we conceptualized the performance considering Capri as a place where natural elements are balanced in a perfect harmony. Our A/V work focuses on three natural elements: water, land and Fire represented in three consecutive 'live performing acts'. The work is a travel around and inside the Island. Emerging from the water, observer encounters the land with its rocky textures and finally, from the open sea, he sees the whole island, as a perfect synthesis of natural elements.
The projection in wide format and the multi-point diffusion of sounds give the sensation to be surrounded by images and sounds, generating a ‘virtual environment’ around the audience. The synesthetic link between audio and visuals is obtained trough the use of sound-reactive patches, entirely programmed in VVVV, controlled live during the performance. Audio is distributed across 4 speakers disposed ad hoc in the location.

❝But he knows the way that I take; when he has tried me, I shall come out as gold. My foot has held fast to his steps; I have kept his way and have not turned aside. I have not departed from the commandment of his lips; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my portion of food.❞

Here is one of many reference stills I took during production for post production of the 2011 'The Block' launch campaign. This provided the 3D team with a quick visual reference of scale for this hammer prop. A computer generated hammer head was added in post production.
Note the shoe covers - always a good idea to have these on if you're working on a painted greenscreen floor
The show 'The Block' became Australia's highest rating show of the year during it's final episode with over 3 million viewers resulting in an audience share of 42.2%. Visual Effects Supervising and Art Directing the launch campaign was an enormously challenging task and the largest VFX job Channel Nine's VFX/Design department had undertaken at that time. Since then we have upped the ante once more.
