Friends, even the most basic understanding of revolutionary politics makes us realise the fact that we the people make our.

own destinies, but we don't make them out of sheer free will. We n1ake them under the given circumstances, most often.

confronting and smashing the pre~ailing social and economic structures. These structures, based on Lhe production.

relatio'ns, are determined largely by the modes of ownerships of means of production and the concomitant distribution of.

power in society. The prevailing world order, institutionalised by the prevailing power relations, keeps making attempts to.

hegemonise its positions in order to.present it as the .

'inevitable' the only possible syst~m. Precisely because of this reason, the nco-liberal (?) forces keep harping on the TINA (there is no alternative) argument. That is why, demo! ishing thisargument and exposing its intellectual bankruptcy becomes most important task for us, the students believing in thetvlarxist ideology. We cannot escape the historic responsibility of ours to historicising the struggles and in the processrevolutionising history by forging a horizontal solidarity with the struggling masses. A solidarity where we go beyond.

being mere theoreticians and become a part of the forces of resistance while simultaneously making the people capable of.

theorising. That in sum is the task for us ... to build a revolutionary praxis. .

Unfortunately, that's where the mainstream left forces have failed spectacularly in our country. Instead of mobi Iising thepeople in a revolutionary struggle, for large part of their existence these forces have been making attempts to survive andin the process instead of setting the tone of debate, largely they have kept shaping their politics in response to the eventsand actions of other, anti-people forces on the right (Alas! We never knew that for few even revolutionary politics is apolitics of reaction!). The most glaring example of this is seen in I989, when CPl(M) supported V. P. Singh governmenttogether with BJP in order to keep Congress(!) at bay. Ifonly they knew that within 7 years of that, they were supportingUnited Fronts governments with Congress (I) to keep BJP at bay and in 2004 they were actually supporting INC itself. Somuch for their 'concrete understanding ofconcrete situations.' The irony of their position is reflected in the fact that theydespite keep talking of ·class struggle', .of the need to mobilise the working classes, and of building a revolutionarymovement, the politics of these forces has been confined in the realm. of stopping regressive social forces by aligningthemselves wi th the oppottunistic parliamentary organisations and in the process becoming the same. This is also reflectedin the fact that over the last few decades we have seen the left-wing trade union movement dying a slow death in ourcountry and getting appropriated by the Bhartiya Majdoor Sangh, an RSS affiliate. .

On The Social Question : The failure of all these mainstream left forces lies in their failure in understanding thecontradictions of Indian society, especially the continuing dominance of regressive social structures. Owing to their rigid, mechanical approach of perceiving these structures merely as 'false consciousness' which would go away automaticallywith the revolution or as a conspiracy of the state and the bourgeois to divide the revolutionary mass, mainstream leftforces have failed categorically to perceive the struggles against these structures as an integral and necessary part of therevolutionary struggle. Both ofthese understandings are a telling comment on the intellectual bankruptcy of these forces. The fact is that these structures of primordial solidarities not only coexist with the successive .~ocial fonnations but theyalso shape and determine the divisions within the revolutionary m:1sses. Unfortunatcty. the rcatrionary, right wing forceshave shown tremendous capacity in exploiting these stmctures m:d frustrating and spoiling our attempts of revolutionizing.

the masses. .

Having reduced their understanding of revolutionary politics t mere parliamentht·i~m, the nn(nstream left fo rces haveremained blind to the fact that the Indian model of parlian1;:J1lary democracy ope-rates mor~ through building castealliances! religious/regional chnuvinism and other such pre-modern structures th;m by informed choices made by therndian 'citizenry'. Having gotten completely hegemonised by the ·charms' of power, the political orientation of themainstream left has remained confined to making attempts of defeating communal fascist forces electorally by enteringinto alliances with other so--called secular forc~s. In doing that they have remained oblivious to the expanding casteist, communal and p:1triarchal bas~ of these fascist forces. The most important and urgent task of the left movement in Indiashould had been to smash thl!se structures which divide the working classes and to radicalise the workers with arevo lutionary class consciousness. However, in the desperation to defeat the communal fascist forces elcctorally, the.

parliamentary left has abandoned the task long back. PSU strongly believes in the necessity of a spirited struggle againstthese regressive social structures for building and sharpening class struggle. Revolutionary restructuring of the existingsocial system is an inescapable task for carrying out a socialist revolution, failing which any political or economicrevolution would not sustain itself for long. .

Understanding the economic situation: Understanding the basic character of the economy remains one of the mostimportant tasks for revolutionary forces. Fighting against capitalism and imperialism requires us to go for a rigvrousanalysis of the political economy of our times both on the national and internationaI !eveIs. And here again the intellectual.

bankruptcy of different left organisations becomes starkly evident. Even a cursory analysis of indian society reveals the.

fact that contrary to the 'beliefs' of various left outfits, it is not a feudal. semi feudal or landlord-bourgeois economy.!l1f;de of production and the consequent production relations in our country are definitely ~apitalist, though peripheral tothe world economy anc' tied inalienably to the economics of the developed world. Be it agriculture, manufacturing orrvk,r ser..tor. almost all sectors of Indian economy are market oriented and are operating with the aim of generating.
