My eldest face to face with a dinasaur fossil for the first time. Well not a dinasaur for the purists; it is a Mosasaur. But that's close enough.
He knew the pictures of excavations from the books, but this was the real deal.

The Crystal Palace Dinosaurs are a series of sculptures of dinosaurs and extinct mammals located in Crystal Palace, South London.
Commissioned in 1852 and unveiled in 1854, they were the first dinosaur sculptures in the world, pre-dating the publication of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species by six years.

The fossil of the mosasaur found originally in Maastricht and then later kidnapped by the French soldiers during Napoleon's reign is temporarily back on home ground.
When old Moz was built, only the head of a Mosasaurus had actually been found, so he was placed mostly in the lake so that the body detail could be fudged.
Part of the collection of dinosaurs in Crystal Palace Park, created in 1852 from the available scientific information at the time.

Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Leiden. I went there the other day with friends from The Hague and we had a great time discovering the wonders of nature. This rare piece was actually found in what today is the Netherlands, near Maastricht.
In the Natural History Museum of Maastricht in Southern Limburg, where we have been on holiday.
The aquatic mosasaurus lived in the Cretaceous period (70-65 million years ago) in the area near the river Meuse.
