Morgenstille an der Elbe mit spiegelglattem Wasser und perfekten Spiegelungen / Morning calm on the Elbe with glassy water and perfect reflections.
In the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in northeastern Brazil, tropical rains transform the hollows between dunes into freshwater lagoons each year. This fleeting phenomenon, visible for only a few months, results from rainwater collecting in sandy valleys, creating a rare landscape where the apparent desert becomes a network of crystal-clear basins. In this early morning image, a calm lagoon rests between wind-sculpted rippled dunes. The clear sky, fading from yellow to deep blue, bathes the scene in soft, silent light. The clear water contrasts with the pale sand, revealing a fragile harmony between the elements. A suspended moment in a world shaped by rain and wind.
The early morning at Deventer Station is a haven of tranquility. The rising sun casts a soft orange glow on the tracks and the early travelers on the platform. Against the backdrop of historic architecture, the dawn promises new possibilities as the world slowly awakens.

Golden Sea, Silent Voyage
The morning above the bay is silent, and the sea burns in gold.
A fisherman returns — tired, yet peaceful.
He sails through what seems like gold,
but it’s only the reflection of a humble dawn and quiet joy.
Zlatno more, tiha plovidba
Jutro nad uvalom šuti, a more gori zlatnim sjajem.
Ribolovac se vraća — umoran, ali miran.
Plovi po svjetlu koje izgleda kao zlato,
a zapravo je samo odsjaj jednog skromnog jutra i tihe radosti.

As I stood on the promenade at sunrise, the first light began to paint the horizon with soft golds and pinks, gently illuminating the water below. It was a moment of pure tranquility—a quiet pause before the bustle of the day. Simultaneously, the image itself captures this interplay of nature and urban life. Warm hues blend into the sky as subtle reflections dance on the water, and the promenade frames the scene.

The rain had stopped, but its whispers remained—tiny secrets clinging to the tent like a lullaby from the night. The air was cool, the world still drowsy. Just before the sun stirred, I sat there quietly, wrapped in that tender pause between dreams and daylight, where everything feels possible
as the early morning sun crests the horizon at palmanova beach, its rays dance across the tranquil mediterranean waters, casting a golden glow over the winter scape. silhouettes of palm trees and moored sailboats create a serene tableau, while seagulls glide gracefully above, welcoming the day. this peaceful moment, captured in the quiet of winter, reflects the stillness and beauty of dawn, a daily renaissance that rejuvenates the soul.

On a very cold October morning in 2019, I parked in the dark at Convict Lake and awaited the sunrise. Laurel Mountain behind the lake is perfectly positioned to catch the Golden Hours rays. It was wonderful to watch the line of light move slowly down to the lake.
Convict Lake, though not part of the Mammoth Lakes region is just south of the town. The origin of the name is worth Googling.

One of the prettiest lake settings in the Sierra Nevada is Convict Lake. The name and the beauty do not seem to align. If you Google it, you'll find a bloody episode from the old west.
Though not part of the Mammoth Lakes region, I like to lump it in with those others because it is so close.
After visiting the lake many times in daylight, I decided to show up before sunrise one morning to get the golden hour color. I was not disappointed.

One of the prettiest lakes in the Eastern Sierra Nevada is Convict Lake, tucked into a pocket of soaring peaks. Such a lovely lake with such a harsh name? It is because of a true Old West tale of a posse chasing hardened escaped convicts. It began in Carson City, NV and ended here where the fleeing convicts found a dead end to their trail, literally. There was a shootout. Some of the outlaws were killed as well as a deputy named Morrison. His name was given to the tallest peak behind the lake.
After visiting Convict Lake many times in the daylight, I decided to get up early and await the sunrise. The scene did not disappoint.

Convict Lake, named for a gun battle between a posse and jail escapees, is always a stop for me when I am up in the Sierra Nevada.
Nearby Mt. Morrison is named for a lawman killed in that battle.
I've been there at every season, but never at sunrise. On this trip I braved the cold and stood in the dark waiting for the new day's rays to hit Laurel Mountain. Finally the Golden Hour color began to creep down the peak and I snapped this shot.

Pardon my posting this scene again, but it is one of my favorites. I captured this with one of my infamous photo ambushes. I arrived at my predetermined spot in the dark and cold and waited for the sun to show its first rays. When it finally did, I pounced on it and shot it. Maybe I should have worn a bandana over my face and a cowboy hat.

On my 2018 Autumn Color scout to the Mammoth Lakes area of the Sierra Nevada I decided to revisit Convict Lake but to go there before sunrise. I wanted to catch the Golden Hour color on Laurel Peak. I got an unexpected bonus when I found the water mirror calm and showing this reflection.
Click on photo to the largest display and note the amazing convolutions in the rock at the bottom of the peaks.
The story behind the name of this lake is quite interesting and invokes memories of the wild west. Google it for some good reading.

One of the most beautiful spots in the Eastern Sierra Nevada has a less than beautiful name. Convict Lake (named for a violent encounter of a posse and escaped inmates) nestles below towering peaks on three sides and is in the perfect spot to catch the first of the Golden Hour sun. I was lucky enough to photograph this feature on my last day of my annual Sierra Nevada trek last year.

in those first seconds after waking, everything feels possible. the city still wrapped in velvet shadows, silent and slow. only the towers remember that time never sleeps. a soundless ringing for those who don’t need to check the hour. sevilla breathes softly. and somewhere above, the bells count minutes no one needs.

Several times I had visited Convict Lake in the Mammoth Lakes region of the Eastern Sierra Nevada during daylight. On this trip I had the inspiration to stop there on my way home the final day and await the sunrise. I shivered in the cold and waited. It seemed the sun would never top the peaks behind me but then I began to see a touch of gold on top of Laurel Mountain. Slowly the beautiful color began to creep down towards the water and I snapped some shots. This is one of my favorites.

I'd been to Convict Lake many times during daylight hours. On this trip to the Sierra Nevada I decided to stop there before sunrise on the day I headed home. It was cold and I shivered as I waited for the sun to come over the peaks behind me. Finally, I saw the top of Laurel Mountain lit by the golden rays, and as the light moved down I snapped this shot.
Convict Lake is named so because of a shootout between a posse and escaped convicts in 1871. These men robbed and killed on their run for freedom but were trapped when they came to this spot. Some of the outlaws were killed as was a Wells Fargo agent for whom the peak is named.

After several visits to beautiful Convict Lake, I decided to try for a sunrise shot. I got there in the dark and had to stay in the car to keep from freezing. The surrounding peaks blocked the new sun for some time and I was almost ready to leave when the golden rays started to descend Morrison Peak.
A serene morning view captured aboard the ferry from Wellington to Picton, showcasing the breathtaking beauty of the Marlborough Sounds. The calm waters and soft morning light create a moment of pure tranquility, perfectly reflecting the untouched charm of New Zealand’s landscapes.

The morning sun paints Morrison Peak at Convict Lake in the Sierra Nevada Range. This lake has one of the prettiest settings imaginable, tucked within soaring crags.
I finally got to get the shot I had been planning when I stopped there on my way home from Mammoth Lakes before sunrise. I stood in the dark waiting for the first rays to touch the peaks and then my patience paid off.

One of my favorite photography moments is when I pick a spot promising good sunrise scenes and go there while it is still dark. Then patience is required. Though the forecast has told me when to expect sunrise, the lay of the land has a lot to do with it. In this case, at Convict Lake in the Sierra Nevada, I began to doubt. The dawn seemed very slow in coming. After standing in the cold for more than an hour, I was beginning to think of leaving. Then I saw a band of gold on the tip of Laurel Mountain and began shooting. In the next fifteen minutes, the Golden Hour color moved slowly down the peak until the new rays touched the water.
While the sun crept up I noticed a lot of other colors on the lower portions of the peak which I had never noticed later in the day.

I spent a few days roaming around the Sierra Nevada this week. I was looking for fall color and found some, but also concentrated on the lakes and peaks of the area. On my way home I stopped at Convict Lake in the dark and waited for the sun to begin painting its Golden Hour colors on Laurel Mountain behind the lake. I was shivering in 22 degree temps, but I waited it out. I wasn't disappointed and it may be that my last shot of the trip turned out to be the best.
If you would like to know how the lake got its name, go back to another picture in this album.
