Tonight’s full moon (March 19) is larger, brighter and closer to the Earth than it has been in the past 18 years!

My first experimental moon shot over Warsaw, Poland. (approx. 34% crop)

What do we learn from this shot?

- You do not need tripod, cable release, huge telephoto lenses etc to take a fairly detailed shot of the moon.

For C70-200/4 lens without IS but with C1.4 extender fully zoomed in I used the following settings:

1. Manual <-- or you can also use Shutter priority.

2. Shutter release: 1/400sec <-- Most important to avoid camera shake.

3. ISO: 400 <-- Play with this value to make sure it is not too dark at fast shutter speed, but it must be definitely underexposed not to loose the shadows.

4. Aperture: F5.6 <-- It is the lowest f-stop for my lens with extender mounted on.

5. Focusing: Auto

6. White Balance: I did not care since it is monochrome (Moon was not yellow anyway but fully bright white).

An image of the Blue Moon in 2009. This is not because the moon is blue in colour but when there is a second full moon in a single calendar month. This only happens every 19 years.

First attempt at a photograph of the moon

The moon was a gold coin in the sky earlier tonight.

At 1.30 am (summertime)

.... so the pattern on the moon seems to be turning clockwise during the night?

Full Moon on Thursday 10th November 2011 GMT 7.18pm

This was the time to set beaver traps before the swamps froze, to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. Another interpretation suggests that the name Full Beaver Moon comes from the fact that the beavers are now actively preparing for winter. It is sometimes also referred to as the Frosty Moon.

Tonights moon 28th Nov 2012. Bury, Lancs, UK

This is my first decent shot of the moon. Thanks Bill for the information. It worked!

The first moon image I've captured that I'm reasonably happy with.

The full moon of June is named Strawberry Moon! This picture of the moon is probably the most detailed I have for now.

It is a stacking of 20 pictures, processed with wavelet filters, a technique to bring up details on moon and planetary pictures.

As usual, the moon caught my eye when I took my dog out. I had to come in to get the tripod and camera.

Nice view of the Moon tonight and my fascination continues...

Moon, 30 March 2012 approx 9pm.

Mother Nature has a cruel sense of humor.

I was pretty sure I wouldn't have a clear view of the moon from my house because of all the trees. So I didn't set my alarm or make any preparations for the event. We were having storms and really yucky weather so I figured my chances were between slim and none.

But for whatever reason I kept waking up. 1:00...roll over and go back to sleep. 2:30 rolls around and I wake up again. Finally when I woke up again at 3:45 I figured I might as well get up and just see if I had any view.

Imagine my delight when I walk out on the back deck and I have a perfect view. The moon is shining so bright I didn't even need a flashlight to see my way around. There were a couple of thin, wispy clouds around the moon but that was about it and it was well above the tree line.

Little did I know my joy was to be short lived. I quickly went inside and collected all my gear. In the 10-15 minutes it took me to get a jacket, my camera, my tripod, and a chair, the clouds moved in big time.

I would catch little glimpses of the moon but nothing that was long enough to get a good reading so I could get my camera settings dialed in.

I finally gave up when it starting getting daylight. Still trying to salvage something out of this early morning photo op I decided to try for a nice sunrise. Needless to say that didn't work out either. But that is another story.

Shoot for the Moon.

Even if you miss

you still land among the stars....
