Monument Valley (Navajo: Tsé Biiʼ Ndzisgaii, pronounced [tsʰépìːʔ ǹtsɪ̀skɑ̀ìː], meaning "valley of the rocks") is a region of the Colorado Plateau characterized by a cluster of sandstone buttes, with the largest reaching 1,000 ft (300 m) above the valley floor. The most famous butte formations are located in northeastern Arizona along the Utah–Arizona state line. The valley is considered sacred by the Navajo Nation, the Native American people within whose reservation it lies.

Monument Valley has been featured in many forms of media since the 1930s. Famed director John Ford used the location for a number of his Westerns. Film critic Keith Phipps wrote that "its five square miles [13 km2] have defined what decades of moviegoers think of when they imagine the American West".

History

Before human existence, the Park was once a lowland basin. For hundreds of millions of years, materials that eroded from the early Rock Mountains deposited layer upon layer of sediment which cemented a slow and gentle uplift, generated by ceaseless pressure from below the surface, elevating these horizontal strata quite uniformly one to three miles above sea level. What was once a basin became a plateau.

Natural forces of wind and water that eroded the land spent the last 50 million years cutting into and peeling away at the surface of the plateau. The simple wearing down of altering layers of soft and hard rock slowly revealed the natural wonders of Monument Valley today.

From the visitor center, you see the world-famous panorama of the Mitten Buttes and Merrick Butte. You can also purchase guided tours from Navajo tour operators, who take you down into the valley in Jeeps for a narrated cruise through these mythical formations. Places such as Ear of the Wind and other landmarks can only be accessed via guided tours. During the summer months, the visitor center also features Haskenneini Restaurant, which specializes in both native Navajo and American cuisines, and a film/snack/souvenir shop. There are year-round restroom facilities. One mile before the center, numerous Navajo vendors sell arts, crafts, native food, and souvenirs at roadside stands.

Monument Valley lies within the range of the Navajo Nation Reservation, it is located on the Arizona-Utah state line. The area is part of the Colorado Plateau characterized by a cluster of vast sandstone buttes, the largest reaching 1,000 ft (300 m) above the valley floor. The valley's vivid red color comes from iron oxide exposed in the weathered siltstone. The magnificent formations here are seen from the visitors deck and View Hotel, for me one of the most beautiful views , it is a respected and sacred place, it echoes the timelessness of the valley.

This is an old film photo from a Folklife Festival several years ago. I don't have much from my film days that I think I did well, but I like the framing on this one.

Monument Valley, known for the towering sandstone buttes, is located on the Arizona–Utah border. The valley lies within the range of the Navajo Nation Reservation.

doesn't play very smooth on flickr at least on my computer. I worked fine before uploading here. link to YouTube version www.youtube.com/watch?v=zux1PMeArtQ&feature=youtu.be

I was camping in Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming, under a night sky. A full moon illuminated the tower so I was out taking photos. Suddenly there was a bright blinding light. The next morning I woke up in the camp site, a little groggy. Two days later I was reviewing pics in LR and found this image. I have no memory of taking it.

Monument valley, a rework playing with the topaz plug in.... its a fantastic place not sure if this is any better than the original effort or not?

View from 'North Point' of the 17 mile Monument valley loop road.

Yes, monuments flourish in this countries capital. This one is dedicated to those who gave their lives in past wars. Guards stand at the ready in front of the monument while aids explain to tourists the reasons behind the scene. Even the clouds were ideal that day looking like puffs of smoke from distant canon fire.

Coincidentally, this monument appeared on the cover page of the Calgary Herald newspaper Tuesday September 23. I believe as an anniversary or awareness of the shooting incident of the guard, one year ago.

The famous view looking South into Monument Valley on highway 163. This is the highway Forrest Gump was running down in the movie. To stand there in person was a strange feeling. Id seen it in so many photos and other movies, it felt surreal to be there.

We were few days late for the renown and much visited cherry blossoms.

But D.C. is a place where people around the world come together, we enjoyed the day even without the Sakuras that were gifts by Japan to United States.

I captured this from Thomas Jefferson Memorial, while waiting for the fireworks culminating Cherry Blossoms Festival.

Enjoy the day my friends!

The Pakistan Monument in Islamabad, Pakistan, is a national monument representing the nation's four provinces and three territories. After a competition among many renowned architects, Arif Masood’s plan was selected for the final design. The blooming flower shape of the monument represents Pakistan's progress as a rapidly developing country. The four main petals of the monument represent the four provinces (Balochistan, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Sindh), while the three smaller petals represent the three territories (Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas). The Monument has been designed to reflect the culture and civilization of the country and depicts the story of the Pakistan Movement, dedicated to those who sacrificed themselves for future generations.

From air the monument looks like a star (center) and a crescent moon (formed by walls forming the petals), these represent the star and crescent on Pakistan's flag.

Built between 1877 and 1883, the Saratoga Monument commemorates the American victory in the Battles of Saratoga. British General John Burgoyne surrendered to General Horatio Gates, commander of the American forces, on October 17, 1777 following the battles.

Iconic view of the two "mitten" buttes and the third butte just before sunset during Golden Hour. We camped at the Monument Valley View Campground and this was literally the view from our tent.
