The Spotted Hyena, scientifically known as Crocuta crocuta, stands as the largest among its hyena family, including the brown hyena, striped hyena, and the aardwolf. These captivating creatures are renowned for their distinct spotted coat and powerful hunting skills, earning the moniker "laughing hyena."
Despite their infamous reputation as scavengers, the Spotted Hyena is a formidable hunter, possessing a bite so robust that it can crush the bones of large prey like a giraffe! Their unusual appearance is characterized by a long, powerful neck, mismatched leg lengths (front legs longer than hind), and short, thick yellow-grey fur covered in a unique spot pattern. Each individual's distinctive spots serve as a means of recognition within their community.
Inhabiting a diverse range of environments from semi-deserts to woodlands and mountains, these resilient mammals can survive at elevations as high as 4100 meters. The Serengeti (Tanzania and Kenya) and the Kruger National Park (South Africa) currently harbor the largest populations of these magnificent predators.
Unlike many mammals, Spotted Hyenas forgo dens for rest. Instead, they seek refuge in shaded holes and pools during the day, indulging in water splashes to beat the heat.
As consummate predators, their diet predominantly includes wildebeest, zebras, and various antelope species, though they're not averse to sneaking a sheep or two if living near livestock. Known for their scavenging prowess, they can consume larger animals like giraffes and elephants, even digesting bones completely.
The adaptability of the Spotted Hyena is striking. They've been observed catching fish, tortoises, and even pythons, showcasing their resourcefulness in diverse environments. Evolution has fine-tuned their water efficiency, an invaluable trait for those residing in arid landscapes.
Their rivalry with lions is well-known, often competing for similar habitats and prey. Sometimes, after the painstaking effort of a hunt, these resilient hunters face challenges from opportunistic lions who attempt to claim the spoils. When united, Spotted Hyenas exhibit impressive teamwork, capable of warding off these formidable adversaries.
Intriguing, adaptive, and formidable in the wild, the Spotted Hyena exemplifies nature's resilience and intelligence, vital for its survival in the diverse landscapes of Sub-Saharan Africa.
Bare trees twist like shadows, and the air is thick with cold and mystery. Snow swirls through the forest as the path narrows into the fog — a scene that feels halfway between a dream and a forgotten tale. Each step invites both wonder and caution.

This is a composite image. The Moon was photographed by me in my front yard using the SonyRX10m4. The Great Sand Dunes shot was captured in the late afternoon using an iPhoneXR.
I blended the pics using Snapseed. And then converted the composite image to monochrome using Carbon Black and White Studio.
Sur la côte sauvage du Croisic, le vent sculpte les falaises et le silence dialogue avec la mer.
Cette maison isolée, posée face à l’océan, semble veiller sur le rivage depuis un autre temps.
En noir et blanc, tout devient essentiel : la lumière, la texture, la solitude.
C’est un hommage à ces paysages bretons où la ligne d’horizon devient frontière entre le réel et le rêve.
