Just playing around testing out modular building in SL now that PBR materials are live. Aside from the lights and water prims this was made with a single rectangle mesh and two variants of the same material to avoid too much noticeable repetition.

The MOD 112, for a team of young, innovative developers, who are set to demonstrate that modular can be right for the city, addresses the need for moderate income, small units with a reduced financing period, short delivery time through offsite construction. The design is intentionally rigorous, taking advantage of the restrictions inherent to the construction methods, turning the limitations into opportunities.
The design strategy is very simple: the facade expresses the stacking of the pieces, but also groups the modules to showcase the breadth of the individual residential units.
The result, far from a beehive collection of small modules, is a building composed of clearly identifiable and diverse housing units, that feel more like micro-lofts, than micro-units The high ceiling and the large windows also relate to the proportional relationships of loft spaces, the light and airy living area allows for different modes of inhabitation.
The frames that outline the units on the two facades, stem from a single pilaster that knits together the whole and identifies the lobby and rear park access.
The material selection utilizes large unitized super-insulated glass windows, simple flashing metal colored bands and textured concrete panels. The recycled wood panel accents recall the classic
fifties furniture, in some way reminding us that prefabricated construction is and should be built as precisely as modernist furniture.
Like TRA's past projects downtown, this project addresses the best utilization of infill sites, the small but significant interventions strategically contributing, like the stimulation points on a meridian channel network, to the revitalization of still emerging neighborhoods.

My new favorite modular origami pattern for gifts is this one. Takes only 8 sheets of paper, goes together really quick, and only has three main folds per unit. The assembly is a little tricky, so I have more than 3 shots. ;-) Start by choosing eight (8) sheets of paper the same size, either the same, or coordinating patterns and colors.
This project was partly about the ideas of modularity but also communicating a sequence or progression in design. The shape we were to build was an icosahedron, one of five platonic solids. We were to show how the icosahedron was formed out of a number of triangles.

This product is pretty cool. One guy set up this home's foundation in a couple days using this modular expanded polystyrene formwork. The consolation to using non-biodegradable polystyrene as a formwork is that you leave the blocks in place, substantially increasing the R-value of the foundation. Not losing heat to the ground represents a huge energy savings in the northern climates.

More pictures of the colony ship. I actually prefer the shorter variants pictured at the end. Also much easier to move around. The completed thing falls apart a lot when moved even slightly.
When I tear it apart perhaps I shall post more pictures, but there's nothing especially exciting going on internally, apart from maybe the bridge.
Apologies for the lack of post-production on these, but I simply don't care enough to faff around trying to remove backgrounds, etc. I'm impressed by the clean photography from many of you, but I'm not that person.
