In yet another instance of blatant intimidation and victimization of every voice protesting against the communal genocide in Gujarat in 2002, police officer Sanjeev Bhatt was recently arrested by the Narendra Modi government. During the Gujarat pogrom, we witnessed the real fascist face of the Modi government. This spate of witch-hunting of police officers who have dared to expose the nature of pogrom has once more revealed the extent to which the Sangh Parivar can go to protect perpetrators of this heinous pogrom. .
Who exactly is Sanjeev Bhatt, and why is the Modi government so interested in silencing and punishing him? Bhatt is a key witness in the Zakia Ahsan Jafri case he has put on record detailed evidence that threatens to indict the Modi Government and Narendra Modi himself for facilitating the communal violence of 2002. He has also put forward evidence suggesting that former Gujarat Minister Haren Pandya was killed by Tulsiram Prajapati (who was then killed by Gujarat police in a fake encounter). Bhatt (who is a senior Intelligence officer in Gujarat) has submitted an affidavit in the Supreme Court stating that in February 2002, he had attended a meeting at Modis home, in which the CM had instructed the police and administration to let Hindus vent their anger against the Godhra incident. And now, Bhatt is being punished for making public Modis clear signal to the Gujarat administration to allow a free hand to communal violence. Bhatt was suspended on August 8 with immediate effect on the grounds that his conduct was unbecoming of an IPS officer, citing various flimsy charges. Following this suspension, he has now been arrested. .
Sanjeev Bhatt is not the only exception: Rahul Sharma, who had been Deputy Commissioner of Police in the Police Control Room in 2002, has been chargesheeted by the Gujarat government. In 2004 he had submitted CDs of call records between the police, politicians and Sangh Parivar members during the 2002 riots to the Nanavati Commission. These records show that BJP and Sangh leaders were on the phone with police, issuing directions to ensure that no action was taken to protect Muslims. .
Sharma had been Superintendent of Police in Bhavnagar in February 2002. His affidavit told the Nanavati Commission that a senior Minister in the Modi Government, Gordhan Zadafia, had contacted him to tell him that the ratio of deaths in his district was not good. Zadafia was referring to the fact that in Bhavnagar, the number of Hindus killed in police firing on rioters was more than that of Muslim victims of the riots! Sharma was transferred from Bhavnagar to Ahmedabad soon after, when he refused to release BJP activists accused of arson on a local mosque. .
The third IPS officer to face victimization is DIG Rajneesh Rai, who has been transferred from CID Crime to the Crime Records Bureau. Rai was responsible for the arrests of IPS officers DG Vanzara, Rajkumar Pandian and Dinesh MN from Rajasthan in the Sohrabbudin Sheikh fake encounter case. Rai has accused senior IPS personnel and Ministers in the Gujarat government (like former state DGP PC Pande and former Home Minister Amit Shah), of conspiring to cover up the 2002 genocide and various fake encounters. .
In the backdrop of this witch-hunt of whistleblowers in Gujarat, the UPA and the Gujarat government are engaging in an elaborate game of shadow-boxing. We have seen in the past that the UPA has merely used the communal violence and fake encounter cases in Gujarat as a bargaining chip to put pressure on the BJP and make it toe the line in times when it threatens to challenge the Central Government. If the Congress is really serious about combating communal violence, the matter calls for the dismissal of the Gujarat Government and Chief Minister, to ensure that they do not succeed in their plans to destroy evidence and sabotage the investigations into the cases of state-sponsored genocide of minorities and fake encounters. .
Democratic voices across the country have come out in protest against the arrest of Sanjeev Bhatt. In this context, AISA is organizing a public meeting tonight (Oct 5th) at Mahi-Mandavi Mess from 9.30 pm onwards, which will be addressed by film maker Gauhar Raza and social activist Himanshu Kumar and retired IPS officer R.B. Sreekumar (who has also been victimized by the Modi government). R.B. Sreekumar is former Gujarat State Director-General of Police (intelligence). In August 2004, Sreekumar deposed against the government before the Nanavati-Shah Commission looking into the 2002 Godhra carnage and subsequent riots. Fascist Modi govt. retaliated by denying promotion to Sreekumar to the rank of Director General of Police. He took his case to the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) that gave its ruling in September 2006 in his favour. The state government then appealed to the vice-chairman of CAT, and subsequently to the Gujarat High Court, but Sreekumar came out victorious both times. AISA appeals to the student community to participate in this public meeting tonight. .
