Edited MODIS Aqua and labeled (by NASA) image of smoke and fires in California. Color/processing variant.

Original caption: From last night until today the Carr fire has consumed 12,000 more acres for a total of 110,154 acres and is 27% contained. The number of residences destroyed overnight rose by 161, commercial buildings by 1, and outbuildings by 108. These numbers do not even reflect structures damaged by the fire, only those destroyed. This fire has proven to be extremely difficult to contain due to both weather conditions and terrain conditions. CAL fire notes that: "Converging East and West winds paired with steep terrain have challenged firefighting efforts." There are still over 2,500 structures being threatened by this fire and the weather conditions that contributed to the start of the this fire have yet to abate.

The Mendocino Complex of fires are made up of the River and Ranch fires. The River fire grew almost 7,000 acres overnight to 27,069 acres. One more residence and two more outbuildings were destroyed, but 12,200 structures are still being threatened by this fire. As with most of the fires wreaking havoc in California, this one is being helped along by weather conditions as hot, dry, windy conditions continue to persist. The fire burned actively throughout the night and firefighters were challenged by long distance spotting. The Ranch fire (the second part of the Mendocino Complex of fires) grew by more than 12,000 acres to 35,076 acres. Seven residences and 3 outbuildings have been destroyed to date by this fire. As with the River fire, weather conditions in the area are not conducive to firefighting but are to fire spread. There does not seem to be any end in sight for either of these fires.

The Ferguson fire is in its 19th day after having started on July 13. The Ferguson fire is the slowest growing of the fires represented here having only grown 1,187 acres overnight. This fire is listed as 33% contained. The residents of the area have been cautioned that the smoke may increase due to firefighting efforts which will include "Tactical Firing" which Inciweb describes as "an effective way to reduce fuel loads while simultaneously widening or extending containment lines. It can reduce the duration and intensity of wildfires, particularly by decreasing available fuels and weakening the fire as it approaches containment lines." So basically firefighters set fires and burn the fuels in a controlled manner ahead of the actual fire in an effort to contain fire growth.

All of these fires are causing huge amounts of destruction, but they are also creating health hazards with the amount of smoke that is being pumped into the atmosphere. A study from Georgia Tech found that particle pollution from wildfires, long known for containing soot and other fine particles known to be dangerous to human health, is much worse than previously thought. Naturally burning timber and brush from wildfires release dangerous particles into the air at a rate three times as high as levels known by the EPA, researchers at Georgia Tech found. The study also found wildfires spew methanol, benzene, ozone and other noxious chemicals. (Journal reference: www.nature.com/articles/ngeo2960)

NASA's EOSDIS provides the capability to interactively browse over 600 global, full-resolution satellite imagery layers and then download the underlying data. Many of the available imagery layers are updated within three hours of observation, essentially showing the entire Earth as it looks "right now". This natural-color satellite image was collected by the Aqua satellite on July 30, 2018. Actively burning areas, detected by thermal bands, are outlined in red. Edited MODIS Terra image of part of Australia's Diamantina National Park. Color/processing variant.

Original caption: On September 25, 2018, NASA’s Terra satellite flew over the rolling red grasslands and hills of Queensland’s “outback” – a term that designates the remote open spaces of Australia’s interior, where skies are large, the rocks are red, and summers are hot and dry. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard that satellite acquired a stunning true-color image centered on Diamantina National Park on that same day.

The outback of South West Queensland, the home of Diamantina National Park, is particularly remote and rugged. Located roughly 250 miles (400 km) southeast of the town of Winton, the road to Diamantina, according to the Queensland Parks and Forests website, include at least 200 km (124 mi) of unsealed roads. They specify, “Road conditions vary but you will experience deep wheel ruts and areas of bulldust. Small amounts of rain can make the roads impassable.” And, “Not all roads and tracks shown on commercially-available maps, including GPS maps, actually exist and those that do may not be open to the public.”

The braided Diamantina River is the heart of the park and rises in the Swords Range (mountains) southwest of Winton. Although an ephemeral river – one that dries up in places in hot, dry summers – the Diamantina has been an important river for indigenous people, who used its shallow channels as a trading route, and a source for subsistence in the surrounding grasslands, sand dunes, and sandstone mountains. More recently the Diamantina’s grassland have been used for pastureland for livestock. Almost all of the land in the region outside of Diamantina National Park is currently being used for pasturage.

For bringing awareness about cleanliness Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, Founder, Sulabh Movement has left no stone unturned. This was proved today at the Central Park, Connaught Place, New Delhi where convergence of 1000 students from various schools of Delhi who are members of Sulabh School Sanitation Club, along with member students from six countries — Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Bangladesh and Afghanistan participated in the event. The crowd gave a big round of applause when Shri Vijay Goyal, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak and Mrs. Amola Pathak joined these school children in this walkathon carrying replicas of toilet pots over their heads and slogans of cleanliness drive in their hands with the message “Toilet for All by 2019”. The unveiling of the replica of India’s largest toilet pot was another attraction of the day. All these events were part of celebrations of International Toilet Festival in view of ‘World Toilet Day’ that falls tomorrow: November 19, 2014.

Around 2000 people including 1000 school children, 200 liberated and rehabilitated manual scavengers from Alwar and Tonk (Rajasthan), 100 widows from Vrindavan and Varanasi and women from Mewat (Haryana) and others from all walks of life actively took part in the event and made a HUMAN CHAIN to create awareness about the importance of toilets in keeping with ‘Swachch Bharat’ campaign of the Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Hon’ble Shri Karan Singh Tanwar, Vice Chairperson, New Delhi Municipal Corporation joined the students in this HUMAN CHAIN.

On this occasion students released 1000 balloons in the air with the message of cleanliness drive.

During the event Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak called upon the participating students and others for a PLEDGE to make India clean.

The largest tri-coloured Flag of India was unfurled with pride in Connaught Place when Dr. Bindeshwer Pathak, icon of Sanitation along with 2000 people including erstwhile untouchables of Alwar and Tonk, Rajasthan and widows of Vrindavan and Varanasi recited “JAN-GAN-MAN’. This was part of the International Toilet Festival being celebrated by Sulabh International Social Service Organisation.

On the occasion Hon’ble Shri Karan Singh Tanwar, Vice Chairperson, New Delhi Municipal Corporation, Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak and Sulabh Sanitation Club’s member students from six countries — Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Bangladesh and Afghanistan shared the dais and lighted the Lamp.

Hon’ble Shri Karan Singh Tanwar delivered a motivational speech on Clean India Drive (Swachch Bharat Campaign).

Sulabh International Founder, Dr. Pathak addressed the audience and said that our aim is to create awareness about toilets and sanitation. Hailing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of having a toilet built in every household by 2019, Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak said that the country will finally realise Mahatma Gandhi's dream of total sanitation.

"Narendra Modi is the first Prime Minister to have emphasised this much on the issue of sanitation. Even the developed countries have not emphasised as much," he said. Lamenting the fact that previous governments did not adopt the "Sulabh model" he expressed hope that the Modi Government will replicate it, which he claimed will help the government in achieving its objective of total sanitation.

"Our model has helped in putting an end to large scale open defecation in many areas apart from liberating many manual scavengers. The Alwar and Tonk model should be replicated all over the country," he said.

A skit “Ghar Ghar Alakh Jagane Wale” was played to show the importance of Sulabh Shauchalayas in our lives.
