I designed, supplied and installed the furnishings for this loft project during the construction of this building in Washington, DC. I was given 3 weeks to pull together the floor plans, furniture, artwork and accessories...it all had to be staged for a scheduled photoshoot - NO IFS ANDS OR BUTS...I spent two days supervising deliveries..uncrating furnture which was imported from France...picking up the artwork and accesories...and installing the pieces...each piece had to be hauled up three flights of stairs because the elevators hadn't been installed...I hired two housekeepers to arrive before the photoshoot to clean the dust off the furniture and the floors. The construction workers kept entering the loft ( the only finished room in the entire building) to admire my work...but dusty footprints and fingerprints were everywhere! Dusty construction workers are sexy...but these admired admirers were a menace!! This was my first project for real estate moguls, Monty Hoffman and Ashley Gurstenfeld. ...I was given this design job, site unseen, after one of their building managers saw my personal residence - a loft in the building next door- and insisted that my work was clearly cutting-edge... ...Monty and Ashley loved the product so much that they photograped the room you're looking at and plastered it on a billboard!! I didn't meet Monty Hoffman or Ashley Gurstenfeld until I designed and installed Monty's next project, The Alta Condominium...which was THE first green building in the District of Columbia...CNN did a story on it.
I chose chocolate brown to serve as a dramatic backdrop for my clients incredible master bedroom paintings. My scheme exudes warmth, mystery and sex appeal.
Before we disassembled this project, I grabbed my camera and took this last minute shot...the floral arrangements were wilted, but the work was stellar.

The staircase flows upward like a ribbon, inviting visitors into the museum’s upper gallery spaces. Its cream-colored balustrade contrasts subtly with the brass handrails and the charcoal-toned carpeted steps. There's a quiet grace to the ascent—each element has been designed not just for function, but to contribute to the viewer’s sense of spatial rhythm. The warm wood borders of the steps peek out from beneath the runner, adding a grounding detail to the otherwise airy palette.
Light gently illuminates the curved wall, creating a soft gradient that mimics the arc of the staircase itself. At every step, the architecture seems to whisper instead of shout—offering a moment of calm before you turn the corner into the next artistic experience. The subtle lighting also emphasizes the smooth plaster texture of the walls, revealing the care and craftsmanship that went into their creation.
Just beneath the sweep of the upper curve, part of a vivid, abstract painting emerges—an echo of the color and creativity housed throughout The Phillips Collection. The composition of this photograph is deliberate: the stairway leads the eye naturally into the world of art, both literal and figurative. The railing becomes a line of inquiry, the steps a metaphor for progression—an ascent into discovery.
Though clearly modern in execution, the staircase hints at Art Deco and Streamline Moderne influences in its curvature and elegance. The pairing of painted surfaces with rich brass and wood detailing is a nod to luxury without excess—refined and tasteful in a way that suits the museum’s broader sensibility.
As with many parts of The Phillips Collection, this staircase was designed with the visitor in mind. Its comfortable treads and sweeping form prioritize accessibility while still delivering a visually powerful experience. It's no wonder that this spot is a favorite among photographers, architecture enthusiasts, and museum-goers alike. Whether ascending to a new exhibit or simply admiring the lines and light, one can’t help but pause and take in the serenity of this beautifully crafted structure.
More than just a passageway, this staircase is a sculptural moment within the museum’s architecture—a physical bridge between eras, styles, and stories. With every footstep, you’re part of the museum’s evolving narrative.

This "gathering-room" was the first of my modern-styled designs. My clients actually hesitated hiring me because all of my work -prior to meeting them- had been traditionally based. I acquired the clients by donating 10 hours of professional design services to the District of Columbia's Human Rights Campaign "silent auction." When I presented the design to them at our second meeting, they were floored and whipped out their checkbook. The framed sketch hanging in the background is signed by Picasso.

This colorful and fun "gathering-room" was designed from scratch...I provided the space plan, the built-ins, the colors, the upholstery and overall design to compliment my clients Dr. Seuss art collection as well as her fondness for felines...Every decorative object and furnishing in this photograph is of the very best quality. Formal-Informal-Serious-Whimsical-Bold-Soft.. .call it whatever you like...it's just a beautiful place to lounge and enjoy a video, some music, a glass of wine and some friends.

Watervilla is a modern villa located in Weesperzijde 1099, 1097 Amsterdam, Netherlands. This villa is located on the banks of the great river that passes through urban areas. And an area of 200.0 square meters, the villa was completed in 2015 with contemporary concepts.

Regular periods of sleep are key to a healthy body and a clear mind as it is during sleep that your body renews itself.
When life gets busy, sleep is often the first activity we sacrifice. Considered a luxury by many busy people, sleep is actually as vital to sustaining a balanced life as are breathing, eating, and drinking. Getting sufficient sleep can be a potent energizer, just as not getting enough sleep can leave you feeling drained and sluggish. While eight hours is the average amount of sleep for which most adults should generally aim, the right amount of sleep varies upon the individual. Some people may thrive on just four hours, while others don’t feel well rested unless they’ve slept for ten hours. How much we sleep also varies, depending upon where we are in life. Young people often need more sleep, while Elders may need less. However, the benefits of sleep always stay the same. Regular & consistent periods of wakefulness / sleep are key ingredients to fostering a healthy body & a clear mind. After all, it’s during sleep that your body renews itself.
The ability to forgo sleep is considered by some to be an asset. But, while it may seem the nighttime hours can be better used for more productive activities, sleep in itself is extremely productive. During sleep, your body & psyche are both regaining their strength for the coming day. You may even have the unique opportunity to explore the hidden recesses of your personality while you dream. Meanwhile, your long-term memories are reinforced.
Many cultures engage in an afternoon siesta. Taking a nap is refreshing & can increase both productivity and creativity. Author Lewis Carroll is said to have conceived his idea for Alice in Wonderland while dreaming. A good night’s sleep also has been known to bring with it the gifts of clarity, wisdom, and a fresh perspective. Even the ancient Greeks thought of sleep as a gift from the gods. Giving yourself the gift of peaceful slumber, you’ll likely find yourself feeling alert, refreshed & ready for life’s challenges. You may also find yourself feeling more centered, thoughtful, and aware throughout the day so you can live your full potential. No matter what your ongoing complications may be, try and take time to mend yourself this weekend.
