We attended the 22nd Annual Doo-Dah Parade in Columbus' Short North
District in order to celebrate the Fourth of July. Anyone can
participate, and this man was one of many people on wheels.
While walking home from the booth with Brett, I suddenly screamed and
began convulsing! A U-Haul truck displaying the famous Michigan
Mushroom was parked near our hotel. This monster network of fungus
spreads over 37 acres! Yuck! Even writing about it sends shivers down
my spine! While I look forward to StoryCorpsÂ’ visit to Michigan, IÂ’m
kinda glad I wonÂ’t be there. IÂ’ve a deep fear of this evil mushroom! -

Our location in Charlottesville is ideal. The Mobile Booth sits right
on the downtown mall, in front of the Mud House coffee bar. It feels
like all of Charlottesville passes us by on a daily basis, including
every breed of dog imaginable. This baby Pit is one of our favorite
regulars. - Nora

Johnny and Genevieve Bellamy were our first Detroit participants. They
were interviewed by their granddaughter, Briana.
On our last night in Charleston, we visited the home of participant
Henry Elden. As the architect, there were no trees cut down or
excavation. The weather was calm when we visited, but Henry has
watched many storms from his living room (shown behind him).
This little girl played the full selection of StoryCorps clips
available on the listening station ... and then listened again!
I'm only eight days into my three month tour and already I've consumed
four hamburgers. It's time to diversify my diet--moo! - Brett Myers
This bizarre reflection appeared on the ceiling just a half an hour
after taking that photo of the booth from my window. I call this
reflection, Space Helmet 3000.
Most people in Miami rely on their cars to get around town.
Near the Haitian Market, however, Miamians were spotted using
alternative means of transportation.
StoryCorps facilitator, Brett, poses with participant, Bessie. Bessie
is West Virginia's Queen of Crafts. If you ever need a
sewing/knitting/quilting lesson look her up!
Our new spot in Charleston, West Virginia is snug on the Capitol
grounds. The dome is temporarily wrapped ala Christo or Trojan.
We went to a cookout at Bonniejean's house - she's our host and
liaison from Wisconsin Public Radio. She and her boyfriend, Eric,
prepared a feast, including these brats (bratwurst), which they boiled
in beer for 2 hours (!) before grilling them. And were they ever
scrumptious. Kayvon, my co-facilitator, opted for Boca brats, the
meat-free version.
I spent many of my off hours today playing chess and talking with these
great folks. I'm going native--Charlottesville is great! -Brett Myers
Walking through Madison, I passed this house -- the self-proclaimed
"hosta house." it must have had 200 different varieties of hostas
just in the front yard.
We have a dramatic location in front of General Motors world
headquarters at the Renaissance Center. The weather is beautiful and
from our front windows we can see many boats and Canada too!
An air conditioning problem left the back of the trailer a bit too
steamy. Zac and Matt from headquarters were on-site and constructed
this zany contraption to push cold air back. And it worked! (Well,
kinda-sorta.) Thanks to Sentra Electricians, Al and Jeff for coming up
with a more permanent solution. - Nora
