The Moai wait for the storm as they have done for centuries. Facing west, the next land is thousands of miles away.

Easter Island covers roughly 64 square miles in the South Pacific Ocean, and is located some 2,300 miles from Chile’s west coast and 2,500 miles east of Tahiti. Known as Rapa Nui to its earliest inhabitants, the island was christened Paaseiland, or Easter Island, by Dutch explorers in honor of the day of their arrival in 1722. It was annexed by Chile in the late 19th century and now maintains an economy based largely on tourism.

Easter Island’s most dramatic claim to fame is an array of almost 900 giant stone figures that date back many centuries. The statues reveal their creators to be master craftsmen and engineers, and are distinctive among other stone sculptures found in Polynesian cultures. There has been much speculation about the exact purpose of the statues, the role they played in the ancient civilization of Easter Island and the way they may have been constructed and transported.

SWEETY: „Wohnt hier also der Osterhase ?“

BÄRBEL: „Wahrscheinlich, obwohl ich keinen sehe.“

LUIS: „.

Luckily, Bärbel was able to get the magic bell out of the Indonesian monkey with the help of the banana and before it could be stolen by another monkey, she rang it:

LUIS: “Look, there are not only cows here but also huge heads !”

BÄRBEL: “Do you know where we've ended up here ?”

SWEETY and LUIS: “I have no idea.”

BEARBEL: “It says Easter Island on the sign here.”

SWEETY: “So is this where the Easter bunny lives ?”

BÄRBEL: “Probably, although I don't see one.”

LUIS: “But there are heads here that look familiar from our holiday in Schladming. Great, there's also the magic bell “

The long-exposure shot of Ahu Tongariki and Rono Raraku, Rapa Nui (Easter island), Chile. Fifteen Moais at Ahu Tongariki, Easter island, have been looking at the inactive volcano, Rano Raraku, where they was originated since hundred years ago.

Ahu Akivi is a particular sacred place in Rapa Nui (or Easter Island), looking out towards the Pacific Ocean. The site has seven moai, all of equal shape and size, and is also known as a celestial observatory that was set up around the 16th century.

The site is located inland, rather than along the coast. Moai statues were considered by the early people of Rapa Nui as their ancestors, whom they worshipped as their deity, Make Make.

A particular feature of the seven identical moai statues is that they exactly face sunset during the Spring Equinox and have their backs to the sunrise during the Autumn Equinox. Such an astronomically precise feature is seen only at this location on the island.

Fifteen Moai Statues standing at Ahu Tongariki, this long-exposure shot was taken at dawn.Ahu Tongariki was the main centre and capital of the Hotu Iti, the eastern confederation of the Rapanui. Its moai were toppled during the island's civil wars. In 1960, a tsunami caused by an earthquake off the coast of Chile swept the Ahu Tongariki inland. Ahu Tongariki was substantially restored in the 1990s by a multidisciplinary team headed by archaeologists Claudio Cristino (Director) and Patricia Vargas (Co-director executive team), in a five year project carried out under an official agreement of the Chilean Government with Tadano Limited and theUniversity of Chile.
