I was chasing this storm from Moab to Island in the sky, moon was bright enough to help with the foreground. It all worked out.

Inside Arches National Park at sunset.

The “Windows” section of the park. This is Turret arch from about 50 yards or so away. The foreground had become completely black as the sun had set just over the horizon. If you look close you can see the last bit of rays shooting into the clouds to give the amazing colors we had that night. We cut the trip extremely short as we headed back home after just one day in Southern Utah.

The Park Avenue section of Arches National Park in Southern Utah. I was racing around trying to capture every little moment as a storm was approaching the area. Just a few minutes before this shot, the wind picked up to over 40 miles per hour as the front pulled in.

We waited out the storm in our car and then headed towards a few of the hot spots that are closer to the front of the park.

Drive, Bike, Raft, Fly

Driving out of camp we drove next to the river and a bike path and throw in the sky and there are all kinds of ways to enjoy the area. Beautiful part of the country!

Mr Adams also made rare color images from this location in 1950.

Arches National Park on a beautiful day.

At the Intersection of I-70 and HWY 191 you can see the La Sal Mountains covering the horizon which makes you think you might not be in the desert Southwest and the the Red Rock of Moab comes into view. A wonderful place to explore.

A side road off Moab's Arches National Park. Petroglyphs fill the mountain rocks for a view of the past.

As the sun continued to set, the rocks looked like they were on fire.

Rain in Fruita, Colorado forced us to move our trip to Moab, Utah. This was taken somewhere along the HyMasa / Captain Ahab trail. I've never been so wet and dirty, but had so much fun as I did that trip.

Early morning light illuminates this squall outside of Moab, Utah. In the presence of such a monstrous force of nature it was impossible to ignore, especially with its accompanying display of lightening and thunder.

The steer was dead and desiccated, just the hide and skeleton remained.

“Ravens taught me to pay attention. The desert taught me to see. Art and artists taught me to see more…and better…and to appreciate, savor, and protect.”

(At least I think they are ravens.... maybe they are crows?)

I got out to visit my daughter in her new home in Utah. I'll definitely be going back... and I'm happy that I went in winter. I love winter...especially in places that will be 100 degrees plus and super crowded in spring, summer and fall!

One of my favorite spots in the Moab area - and the location of the famous John Ford western film, Rio Grande.

Moab, Utah - September 2014

here's one from much earlier in the trip that I hadn't posted yet

What an incredible sight this was to see. And as the time went on the lighting just kept getting better and better.
