New York City’s skyline is dotted with wooden water towers that are easy to mistake for vanishing relics of the bygone eras of seltzer bottles and street gas lamps.

But what many New Yorkers don’t realize is the towers are hardly antiques — in fact, most drink and bathe from the water stored in them every day.

Most buildings in the city taller than six stories need some sort of water tower and pumping system to provide water pressure to tenants.

Rosenwach is one of two companies in the city that makes wood water towers. The other company is Isseks Brothers.

A skin-walker, or a yee naaldlooshi, follower of the witchery way. Often

misunderstood by their people, the legends about them speak of murder,

necrophilia, and abandonment of humanity.

While some yee naaldlooshi are vicious beings of evil, many are simply

people who have decided, for various reasons, that they would like to spend

part of their lives as animals.

Myths say that the murder of a blood relative is the final step to becoming

a skin-walker, the truth, however, that the death of a loved one is one of

the more common causes of deciding to abandon human form.

It is also said that past of the ritual involves midnight dances in the

nude. This misguided idea is prevalent because skin-walkers cannot

transform their clothing when they take animal form.

One notion that is completely correct is that the skin-walker must use the

pelt of the animal whose form they wish to take.

Nascha of the Gray Wolf Clan chose the life a yee naaldlooshi after her

parents and younger brother died of a fever.

She has since spent much of her time as a snow leopard, in a call far from

the territory of her clan.

When in human form she wears ponchos, blankets, or other garments that can

be easily and quickly shed, or nothing at all.

The legends of skin-walker's evil and sadistic nature has helped her to

avoid others, causing her to propagate the myths whenever possible.

'Spaze Caze' ..the most misunderstood web- comic in the galaxy.. ~~

..the comic has landed me in a bit of trouble over the past few years. Some people don't even give it a chance i think. Some people really like the concept.. others seem to really hate it. Industry sees it as absolutely atrocious.

..the alien 'Spaze Caze' seems to have comes out of nowhere. There is a general 'non-continuity' to each comic with the exception when i need to expand on a more profound storyline. This i think helps so that a reader can jump into it at most anytime.

It also is like a big comic like you'd find in the Sunday paper. Spaze is a orphan left behind between the first 2 'Space Invaders' video games.. he's a schizophrenic alien thrown into all sorts of oddball situations without any real clue why or even who he is..he's disconnected.

Some stories are hilarious..and some situations much are darker in outcome . He doesn't talk but thru' gestures, expressions or 'Wile E. Coyote' type signs..

Something really screwy happens to him in the end or he is killed. Each story is pieced together like much of my other collage work.

Plus it's all me doing all this with a massive amount of labour put into each one. so the scheduling between each comic is horrible. I don't have all the time to commit to a weekly comic even. It sucks but that's life right now.

The character is also really close to me.. as a self-characature ..he's appeared in journals personal works over the past decade as well as 3-d venues in animation, sculpture, i even made a marionette of him. some of this is in disrepair so it will be awhile before i can show those again.

I have a small cult following for Spaze and there is a value and fun in this my greatest labour of love. As with everything i do..it's often misinterpreted or considered 'ugly'. Meh .. i ain' giving up on him tho' .. got bigger plans for him and he still appears in major art projects. Still he get's alot of '?!' and ..'??' ..

..oy.. well i'll keep adding a few more from my archive and new ones as i create them to my FlickR account. Damm Yahoo wants me to upgrade so i'll have to scratch up some funds. ..Grumble ~~**

1956 Porsche 356A “European” Coupe

Chassis No. 55461

Engine No. 60656

Transmission No. 7933

Completed: 01/13/1956

“Many 356 enthusiasts are aware that European-spec cars were imported into the United States when new. Fewer enthusiasts have heard of the 356A "European" badged cars, which are an often misunderstood rarity. The "European" badge did not signify European delivery — in fact, it couldn't be further from the truth!

The 356A model was introduced in the fall of 1955, and some had a side script that proudly identified the car as a "Continental". This name was instigated by Max Hoffman, the exclusive importer of Porsches into the USA who felt that Americans didn't relate to cars that only had model numbers. Previous Porsches had simply been called the "356", which was the Porsche internal design number.

"Continental" Hoffman was convinced that Americans wanted to buy cars with names like "BelAir" or "Fairlane". So, in the spirit of American marketing, Porsche began putting a "Continental" script on the fenders of late 1955 model year coupes and cabriolets that were sent to the United States. Unfortunately for Porsche, Ford Motor Company claimed the rights to the "Continental" name and threatened legal action, so Porsche stopped using that script at the end of the 1955 model year and changed the script to "European" for the 1956 model year (production of which began in the fall of 1955). Cars delivered in Europe did not have the script.

"European" For reasons that are now obscure, Porsche appears to have ceased using the "European" script sometime in January, 1956, well before the end of that production year.

Other than the badge, the "Continental" and "European" cars were standard-specification cars for the United States market, meaning speedometer markings were in miles and the headlights were the sealed beam type. After January, 1956, except for the Speedster and Carrera models no further 356 models were badged with names, only letters were used as model designations. The "European" script does not appear to have ever been reproduced.” - 356 Registry

Chassis No. 55361: This immaculately restored 356A coupe is an extremely exceptional find. Not only is car finished in the very rare Sahara Beige hue offered only in 1956, but it is believed to be one of the last European models ever built.

While under the care of the previous long term owner, the car was fully revived to concourse quality. Some time has passed since the restoration; the glossy paint exhibits slight signs of aging, revealing shallow cracks throughout the surface. However, the remainder of the vehicle survives in impeccable showroom condition.

Mechanically the car is strong and reliable. The 356 drives very well. The ride is smooth, while tracking is straight, even under heavy braking. The only aftermarket item on the European is an upgraded Abarth exhaust system, although the original exhaust accompanies the car.

* One of only 156 European coupes produced!

* Ready to show or drive!

* A very rare treat!

Alamo Vine Merremia dissecta in my garden. Houston, Texas. July 2009.

Some of the most approachable people are also the most vulnerable and misunderstood.

Most hedgerows round here are full of ivy, now in flower, and each plant supports hundreds of pollinating insects, including ivy bees. And will be a rich source of nectar and then fruit into winter.

-------------------------------------------

Clingy, luscious, misunderstood. Ivy has long been accused of strangling trees, but it doesn’t harm the tree at all, and even supports at least 50 species of wildlife.

Ivy is an evergreen, woody climber which can grow to a height of 30m. It has two different forms – juvenile and mature. It has climbing stems with specialised hairs which help it stick to surfaces as it climbs. Mature forms can be self-supporting.

There are two native subspecies of ivy in the British Isles: Hedera helix ssp. helix and Hedera helix ssp. hibernica.

The subspecies hibernica does not climb but spreads across the ground. There are also many cultivated varieties of ivy, with differing leaves which are variable in size, colour, number and depth of lobes. The leaves are often variegated green with white, cream or yellow.

Only mature plants produce flowers. They are yellowish green and appear in small, dome-shaped clusters known as umbels.

Nectar, pollen and berries of ivy are an essential food source for insects and birds during autumn and winter when little else is about. It also provides shelter for insects, birds, bats and other small mammals. The high fat content of the berries is a nutritious food resource for birds and the berries are eaten by a range of species including thrushes, blackcaps, woodpigeons and blackbirds.

Ivy is particularly important to many insects before they go into hibernation. Some of the main insect species which forage on the nectar and pollen of ivy are bees, hoverflies and common wasps.

It is an important food plant for some butterfly and moth larvae such as holly blue, small dusty wave, angle shades and swallow-tailed moth.

Many rare insects are attracted to ivy flowers, including the golden hoverfly.

For a starter, omnomnom, this sure is superb. Couldn’t have asked for an omnomnom better ant. I am looking forward to the upcoming courses. Got a nice hover that flew right into my trap the other day. Almost decapitated himself. Then there’s that other juicy catch just waiting for me to get to it. Too bad Fly saw through my ruse. Would have made a great meal, considering his size!

On my way back from the post office this afternoon, I came across a woman sitting on the ledge of Sparty's base. A couple of tables (with tablecloths) and chairs were set up, Sparty had this hat on, and a balloon-on-a-ribbon was tied to its arm and floating about in the breeze.

I couldn't help but ask the woman what was going on and she explained that it was Sparty's birthday; that she and her boyfriend (who was elsewhere when I first stopped but who came by before I left) had assembled a little picnic, of sorts, to celebrate the occasion. Thinking I might have another 100 Strangers subject, I asked if I could take her photograph, but she declined.

She offered me some lemonade, which I accepted, and she explained that they have done this for a number of years now. They begin the celebration at midnight and stay the entire twenty-four hours. When her boyfriend showed up, she introduced me, then asked if I wanted a hot dog. Again I accepted, and he fired up the gas grill and I chowed down. After taking this (I climbed up onto the statue's base) and a few other photos, I asked if I could take one of the two of them, but again, I was turned down.

Project: Concrete Dualities

Growing up a mixed kid in Vermont had me split. I was mixed all over the place; blended of every paint in the set. It creates a brownish-purple that kinda makes me uncomfortable. The color makes me want to strap on some water wings and swim against the current.

Concrete Duality is going to be a series on being different & often misunderstood. The goal is for the artist and the viewer to come to terms with each other not being understood and both parties accepting this.

What I've learned about survival and success is that you gotta immerse yourself entirely in the sensation of discomfort. It churns my guts and fog my brain....but you gotta ask yourself the hard questions. Harder feat; you gotta be willing to answer them.

Messengers of the Gods - Exhibition at Mission to Seafarers Victoria

Whenever I go anywhere without Savanah I always bring her a gift back. This gift usually comes in the form of a stuff animal or toy. Typically, it has something to do with where I was. When Kathy and I went to Kentucky, we came back with a stuffed horse doll for her. Being that I was at Dragon*Con how could I not bring her something Dragon*Con-ish?

Yes, being the geek that I am, I brought my daughter a stuffed Cthulhu home. She loved it and plays with it, although at first I think she was a little confused as to what exactly it was. LOL

I'm willing to bet she is the only one in her school who has one though!

a quelle amare e difficili.

i sorrisi assoluti e sinceri.

e i seni li adoro tutti,

quelli materni e quelli peccaminosi.

sorrido mentre scrivo velocemente.

il tempo è lento, e risco a scrivere di loro,

delle mie ragazze.

riesco a fare tutto,

a rimanere fermo e stare bene.

uh... I wanted this to flip the other way! Must have misunderstood the instructions. Sigh.
