Misunderstanding all you see

It doesn't matter much to me

Some of these pictures were the product of knowledge and skill and sensibility and invention; many were the product of accident, improvisation, misunderstanding, and empirical experiment. But whether produced by art or by luck, each picture was part of a massive assault on our traditional habits of seeing :-)

I had to do some clean up on the shot because 80 seconds of exposure time really had some fun fireworks but the heavy amount of people using flash photography and their cell phones (you can see a few in the bottom right). Its amazing to me what the camera can capture. If I took video of this you would have seen all these fireworks at various times over the 80 seconds, but thanks to the amazing Bulb setting you get to see them all at once! I was so happy with this type of shot I'm anxious to shoot more events similar to this and work on getting it to not be so grainy.
***Had to make a time adjustment. I reviewed the exif file and realized this was not 180 seconds but 80 seconds rather. Sorry for the misunderstanding! If it was really three minutes the photo would have been completely filled with fireworks as the show itself is very dramatic.
For some strange weather reason, leaves are slow to fall this year. Autumn blends into winter.

At low tide, remnants of the acient reclaimed land can still be seen at the coast of the Frisian villages Paessens-Moddergat.
In front of the pole screen you can clearly see that the sea is very slowly regaining possesion of the land that the Frisians farmers and monks have conquered in the Middle Ages and so they were the pioneers of land reclamation and dyke construction!
Only centuries later, after the use of large windmills, the western provinces of North- and South Holland were able to drain larger area.
But however, the engineers made use of the methods of the Frisians and Groningers.
So it is a widespread misunderstanding that the Dutch were giving the fame of reclaiming land and the protection of the sea....

THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTO:
The wild garden around my vacation home in Ticino, where all the photos you can see in my Flickr gallery are from (well, some have been taken a couple of meters outside, but that still counts in my book 😉), had been a cause of contention between me and my mom for some time.
At the root of the conflict was the upper part of the garden, which originally had been conceived by my dear mother as a vegetable patch, but, left to its own devices by me after I "inherited" it, had developed into a marvelous oasis of pure botanic chaos teeming with insect life.
Mom was not amused. Although she - like all in our family - is very much in favor of letting nature roam freely around the house, and she loves all creatures big and small, she (unlike me) does draw a line somewhere. That line was the vegetable patch.
And she let her disapproval be known, and very clearly; she kept pestering me about my unwillingness to pluck the weeds (my response: "What weeds - there are no weeds: I'm creating a functioning ecosystem here, mom!") for several years, until my stubborn refusal made her reach her breaking point. She'd finally had enough.
My mom is a cunning old lady of nearly 80 years (79 to be precise), the matriarch and evil genius of our family (make no mistake: that house and garden are still HERS - and forever will be, regardless what it says on some sheet of paper), and so like a James Bond villain plotting revenge, she hatched a diabolic plan.
One day, when I was gone for a couple of weeks, she let me know via e-mail she had decided to turn this ugly weed jungle of mine into a flowery meadow. There was nothing I could do as she had already ordered a local gardening company to level that part of the garden, and once that was accomplished, as she described with obvious relish, the gardener would plant the most beautiful wild flowers and turn this ugly mess of mine into a colorful paradise.
I was not amused by this at all, as you might imagine, but there was nothing I could do to save my gorgeous oasis of chaos, so I grumpily accepted "my" garden's fate. After that, my mom avoided me whenever she could, and when she couldn't, she wouldn't mention the garden at all. This didn't strike me as odd, since I assumed she might feel at least a little bit guilty about her sneaky move (at this point, I hadn't seen the "improved" version of the garden yet).
Cut to a few weeks later, when I went back to Ticino and finally DID see the "flowery meadow" and "colorful paradise" my dear mother had ordered. My jaw dropped. But in shock - not in awe of flowery beauty of any kind: as there were NO flowers of any kind. What there was, was sod. Plain, ugly sod, completely devoid of any insect (or other animal) life, already turning into a brownish yellow due to a lack of rain in the past weeks.
You see, my mom's Italian is not very good (in fact, it's so far from good that it could be argued she doesn't speak it at all) and as it turned out, there had been a "slight" misunderstanding. Instead of planting gorgeous wild flowers, the local gardener (whose Italian is impeccable by the way), put turf rolls down after he'd leveled my oasis; turf rolls of the kind that is usually used for sterile football fields.
OK (you, dear reader, might say at this point); sad story, bro - but what does it have to do with the swallowtail in the photo? The answer is: everything. The past autumn and all through spring this year I've been planting wild flowers in that garden like a mad botanist; I've planted field scabiouses and red clover, ox-eye daisies, echium, salvia and thyme and lavender as well as plants for the caterpillars of the in Switzerland rare swallowtail butterfly such as fennel and wild carrots.
This was my desperate attempt to undo the damage and terrible devastation my mother's wrath had brought upon the earth (well, my garden's earth anyway) and turn this sod-desert into an oasis of pure botanic chaos and a colorful paradise teeming with insect life once more.
And it worked! Ever since those plants started flowering my garden has been an attraction for all kinds of butterflies and generally insects, even rare ones - and, obviously, my dearest guest and visitor that you can see in the photo above: the swallowtail.
These gorgeous butterflies are now steady guests, and they even laid their eggs on the fennel (which is now a nursery for cute swallowtail caterpillars). So in the end, my mom's will prevailed (as is always the case with the wills of all moms all over the world - don't kid yourselves, kids 😉). My weeds are gone, there now is indeed a flowery meadow - and there's even vegetables (although the fennel is strictly for the swallowtails 😊).
I have a creeping suspicion maybe my mom's Italian is better than she lets on...

" Let's just be the strangers we were before, Let's just get apart from whatever this is, Let's just fool each other and enjoy the silence we created like that ozone layer surrounding the earth, Let the miscommunication create misunderstanding, and Let the unspoken words be left hidden behind the spacebar of our keyboard whispering blaring the Incomplete stories buried in the graveyard of our dear heart, So let's just get distanced from the formality of being just whatever you "Think".

"I appreciate the misunderstanding I have had with Nature over my perennial border. I think it is a flower garden; she thinks it is a meadow lacking grass, and tries to correct the error."
While weeding my flower garden, I noticed this perennial flower has returned. Of course, so have the various weeds and grasses. I can hardly wait to photograph this plant in all of its lovely stages. It is one of those plants that bring me pleasure, no matter the season.
The original photo for this artwork is of the ugliest and most drab building in the High Street. It is difficult to believe an architect designed it, there must have been a misunderstanding so I just had to give it some fresh colours and texture. It used to be a bank but three of the four banks in the town are now closed.
This photo is of one of the other closed down banks but it is an altogether more interesting building.
Thank you for taking the time to visit, comment, fave or invite. I really appreciate them all.

Well, needless to say, things did not go well for the Muskrat. But predators like foxes are only doing what they are mean't to do, unlike us, they do not have a choice wither to kill or not. In the 1920s and 1930s the United States government went on a massive campaign to exterminate predators. This campaign of poisoning and killing went on for decades. Thousands upon thousands of animals were killed due to a grave misunderstanding of predators. Poison killed indiscriminately and many animals once revered by the Native Americans were brought to the brink of extinction. Bounty hunters paid by the US government were also sent out to kill wolves. Aldo Leopold was one of the first of many voices to speak out against this killing and explain the important role of predators in nature.
"Harmony with the land is like harmony with a friend: you cannot cherish his right hand and chop off his left. That is to say, you cannot love game animals and hate predators...the land is one organism."-Aldo Leopold

words are difficult
things to swallow
transparent
huge
and choking…
I can think
into the air
but the communication wires
shake with electricity
and break…
I can feel
and you might grasp
halfway
what my lips
are trying to say
but can’t…
I can speak
but my tongue
confuses things extremely
unruly creature!
and you turn
in embarrassment
at something that should have
reached you…
I can touch
in hope
that inner reachings
might become attached…
because
words are difficult
things to swallow…

On a moonlight night

I just want to leave
Somewhere over the bright light.

Even without me for a while.
Make a spell
I'm happy from today
Many regrets to just laugh off.
Don't hold them all by just sighing.

What is left of Mary's Cafe and Strevell, Idaho.
Strevell was to be a town for the railroad which was a shortcut from Ogden to Burley by way of Monument Point in Utah for the Union Pacific Line. The railroad was built as far as Catrall, then through some misunderstanding work was discontinued. A railroad service would benefit the dry farmers and homesteaders in the area.
As I understand it, the construction of the freeway was the final blow that did Strevell in.
Strevell, Idaho is located on highway 81 about 3 miles north of the ID/UT border.
As you can see, I was too early to catch that ancient lilac bush in bloom. There were buds on it. For my future reference and anybody else that may care. The flowers should be spectacular and make a much nicer image around the last week of May - fist week of June. They were all blooming in Twin Falls, so, for future years... Twin Falls lilac bloom + 2 weeks is a good time.
Thanks Ross! For putting me on to this little gem.

Lyrics
Whoo!
Mmm, yeah
Life's like a road that you travel on
When there's one day here, and the next day gone
Sometimes you bend, sometimes you stand
Sometimes you turn your back to the wind
There's a world outside every darkened door
Where blues won't haunt you anymore
Where the brave are free and lovers soar
Come ride with me to the distant shore
We won't hesitate
To break down the garden gate
There's not much time left today, yeah
Life is a highway
I wanna ride it all night long
If you're goin' my way
Well, I wanna drive it all night long
Through all these cities and all these towns
It's in my blood, and it's all around
I love you now like I loved you then
This is the road, and these are the hands
From Mozambique to those Memphis nights
The Khyber Pass to Vancouver's lights
Knock me down and back up again
You're in my blood, I'm not a lonely man
There's no load I can't hold
A road so rough, this I know
I'll be there when the light comes in
Just tell 'em we're survivors
Life is a highway
I wanna ride it all night long (whoo!)
If you're goin' my way
I wanna drive it all night long (all night long)
A-gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, yeah
Life is a highway
Well, I wanna ride it all night long, mmm, yeah
If you're goin' my way (if you're goin' my way)
I wanna drive it all night long (all night long)
There was a distance between you and I (between you and I)
A misunderstanding once
But now we look it in the eye, ooh, yeah
Mmm, yeah (whoo!)
There ain't no load that I can't hold
A road so rough, this I know
I'll be there when the light comes in
Tell 'em we're survivors
Life is a highway
Well, I wanna ride it all night long (all night long, yeah)
If you're goin' my way
Well, I wanna drive it all night long
A-gimme, gimme, gimme
A-gimme, gimme, yeah
Life is a highway (life is a highway)
I wanna ride it all night long, whoo, ooh, yeah
If you're goin' my way (if you're goin' my way)
I wanna drive it all night long (all night long, yeah)
C'mon, gimme, gimme, gimme
Gimme, gimme, gimme, yeah
Life is a highway
I wanna ride it all night long

The photo shows the intermediate finale of the scene that I accidentally observed in the park. This big and heavy bike belongs to a much older boy who rode an adult electric scooter at high speed through the alleys of the park. The bike was on the ground. This little boy with great difficulty lifted a bicycle lying on the ground and tried to roll it back to the bench. At the same time, he fell several times along with a heavy bike. Finally, he managed to install the bike and looked sadly at the one who quickly rode the electric scooter and asked the elder for something several times. I was sitting quite far away, but it was not difficult to guess - he asked for a ride on a scooter. The elder laughed out loud as he passed. They were children, but the problem was like that of adults.

Searching for something that ain’t lost
Have we got our lines crossed
We’re wasting time with stuff
that doesn’t really matter
While wishing for something better
I try to fix things that weren’t broken Misunderstandings and words unspoken
We fall apart and I won’t dare to say
Do you feel the same way? (Maybe you don’t wanna know)
but you don’t see what you have in front of you
Or maybe I'm not enough for you (So maybe I should go)
If I had known from the start
This wouldn’t have ended with broken hearts
‘Cause I don’t wanna waste my time
If we don’t feel the same way
Then don’t pretend that everything’s okay
Don’t string me along the way you do Just let me get over you (Maybe you don’t wanna know).

Many different theories have been put forward inside and outside Japan about what the garden is supposed to represent, from islands in a stream, to swimming baby tigers to the peaks of mountains rising above to theories about secrets of geometry or of the rules of equilibrium of odd numbers.
Garden historian Gunter Nitschke wrote: "The garden at Ryōan-ji does not symbolize anything, or more precisely, to avoid any misunderstanding, the garden of Ryōan-ji does not symbolize, nor does it have the value of reproducing a natural beauty that one can find in the real or mythical world. I consider it to be an abstract composition of 'natural' objects in space, a composition whose function is to incite meditation.""
