Mission Concepción, just south of San Antonio, Texas, is the oldest unrestored stone church in America. It was first established in 1711 in east Texas and in 1731 moved to San Antonio by Franciscan friars from Spain. The purpose of Mission Concepción, one of a chain of similar colonial missions, was to convert native peoples to Catholicism. In this area, the Church also instructed the Coahuiltecan people in farming, ranching and stone masonry. The western entrance to the church is aligned to the sunset in such a way that an "annual double solar illumination event" occurs every year on or around August 15, the feast day of the Assumption of Mary. Due the early church’s lack of success in achieving their mission because of rampant disease and threats of attacks by hostile Native groups, the mission was secularized in 1794 and quickly fell into disrepair. Source: www.sanantonio.gov/Mission-Trails/Mission-Trails-Historic...

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization has designated Concepción and four other San Antonio missions, including The Alamo, as a World Heritage Site.

This photo is of Mission Concepcion in San Antonio, Texas. This is one of the San Antonio missions for which I have not yet previously posted any photos in my photostream.

San Antonio, Texas has four or five old Spanish missions within a short driving distance of one another. Each one is very unique.

The oldest unrestored stone church in America Mission Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción de Acuña was built by the Spanish in 1731 to convert locals to Catholicism but it became so much more. This marvel of architecture was an oasis, a fortress, a place for culture, and the backdrop of the first major engagement in the Texas revolution. (It is thought that the priests tipped off the Mexican army that a fraction of the Texian forces had set up camp nearby) If you find yourself in the city of San Antonio, look it up.

Blow this up large, so much to see.

I'm told that we have 14 Bank of America remodels on the books which means early mornings, late nights, and or weekends starting tomorrow so I am going to be hit and miss for a while. I always look at recent activity and update best of washington outdoors so if you have something you know I'd like let me know if I miss it.

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is the most spectacular part of El Camino Real de los Tejas, a braid of trails from Laredo (Texas/Tamaulipas) to Los Adaes (Louisiana). A historically distinct trail from Los Adaes to Natchitoches completes the eastern end of the national historic trail.

The full name of the mission is Mission Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción de Acuña. The name honors Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception and Juan de Acuña, a nobleman who was the Viceroy of New Spain when the mission was established at its current site in 1731. Of the several San Antonio missions managed by the National Park Service, Mission Concepción is closest to its original condition. According to the NPS, the mission "appears very much as it did over two centuries ago. Due to the fact that it was built directly on bedrock, it never lost its roof, or its integrity."

The Mission of Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción was transferred from East Texas in 1731. The church looks essentially as it did in the mid-1700’s when it served as the Mission’s center of religious activity. Colorful geometric designs that once covered its surface have long since faded.

This is one of the rooms of a long building attached to the church. If the walls are constructed like the 45-inch-thick walls of the church, they consist of inside and outside layers of solid stone with a filling of smaller stones and debris in the middle.

It was founded in 1716 in East Texas, as Misión Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción de los Hainais, intended to convert the Hasinai people to Catholicism. The Franciscans moved the mission to San Antonio in 1731.

Like the other churches in San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

By the mid 20th century, much of this fresco on the convento ceiling was covered with soot. Only a single eye was visible. It was known locally as the "Eye of God." In 1988, restoration work revealed a second eye and facial hair. These discoveries suggest that the artist who originally painted the fresco blended Spanish and Native elements and probably meant to depict a human being.
