Ambition produces anxiety whereas if one is free from ambition one’s entire energy is made available.

While she stayed at the cottage with her teacher, Anne Sullivan. Since Helen's parents catered to her every whim, her teacher soon realized that she would have to get away from them awhile in order to be able to control her tantrums and teach her, so this cottage served as living quarters as well as her school.

Close up of the dresser in the master bedroom at Ivy Green, the gloves lay on an old book, between them is an antique door key.. I like to think it's the key Helen used as a child to lock her Mother in the hall closet
In spite of Helen's disabilities, her parents could tell she was extremely intelligent. She invented her own simple system of sign language. She could fold laundry and could pick out her favorite outfits. And when she learned how to use a key, she managed to lock her mother in a closet, on purpose.
(EL) MIRACLEWORKER_KSO_11_15_08228 - The Denver Center Theatre Company host more than 100 Girl Scouts at the Company's Helen Bonfils Theatre, to help the girls build understanding and compassion for persons with visual and hearing impairments. The group tries to walk an obstacle course blindfolded using a cane, tries to carry on daily tasks while blindfolded, and even learn Braille and sign language. The girls then are invited to attend a matinee performance of the company's "The Miracle Worker." Kathryn Scott Osler, The Denver Post
This is one of my favorites at Helen's house.. a small statue of a little blind child reading her braille book with a bunny rabbit in her lap. It used to be by the front entrance gate but for some reason they move it about. I've visited Ivy Green several times in the past and always search for it.
In the main hall of Ivy Green hangs this photograph of Helen and her sister Mildred, and her teacher Anne Sulivan.
The Handwriting is Helen's.
Did headshots for the next NCHS production, The Miracle Worker, a few weeks ago. A key piece of the play, of course, involves the well and water. So we wanted to do something with water as well. I was told, strictly, that dunking the actors in water was not going to be allowed. Defeated, momentarily, I rethought everything. And this is what we came up with - a sheet of acrylite between me and thee - and a heavy dose of water from a spray bottle did the rest. All manually focused like I was some old school film shooter - f/8 and be there!
I've also been wanting to experiment with some more outlandish key and fill colors, so a watery blue offset by some warm orange fill fit the bill...
The bedroom dresser, the man's photo is Helen's brother Phillips Keller, the oval photo reflected in the mirror is Helen at age 13. The quilt on the bed was made by Helen's aunt more than 100 years ago.
