Small, grayish-olive flycatcher; very similar to several other species. Look for relatively bold white eyeing, small bill, and frequent wing flicking. Most easily identified by voice: song is a loud “che-BEK, che-BEK” often repeated in bursts. Also gives a short, dry “whit” call. Found in a variety of wooded or shrubby habitats, often near water during breeding season. Typically solitary, often flitting around actively when foraging. (eBird)

Numerous throughout northern BC, with the occasional bird showing up further south. They are usually difficult to see/photograph, but this one was intent on finding a mate and totally ignored us!

Marche

Jack Snipe. From under a fixed shed of the Sentina Nature Reserve. Sorry if I'm bored with this species, but for me, who managed to photograph it exactly 22 years after I had seen it for the first and only time ever in the same place, it was a great satisfaction. Marche

The Small blue (Cupido minimus). It is the smallest UK butterfly and is hardly blue. Martin Down NNR, Hampshire, England, UK.

"Least Flycatchers don't waste any time on the breeding grounds. It takes them about 58 days to find a mate, build a nest, lay eggs, and raise their young from nestlings to independence, and they only spend about 64 days in their summer homes. That doesn’t leave them much free time."

On a windy cool day I came across 2 very fresh Small Blue. This is the smallest butterfly found in Britain and it was blowing around like crazy.

The hill I was on is called 'Windover' Hill and that day it was living up to its name!!

This is the same butterfly as my previous post.

I also managed an under-side shot of another Small Blue that day and was surprised at the variation of the black markings between the two.

Another shot of the Jack Snipe we came across the other day. This time it turned it's head round showing the brown stripe down the centre of it's head which distinguishes it from all other snipes that have a pale stripe down the centre of the head. A first for me.

Many thanks to all who take the time to view, comment or fave my images.

Sometimes a Bushtit call is unrelenting and relatively loud. I might find one lone Bushtit making enough noise for a whole flock.

Behold the mini-branch monkey who stopped to sing his diminutive song. His audience? His pretty lady nearby.

It is always a delight to see a dainty Small Blue, our smallest butterfly which can have a wingspan as little as 16mm.

This American Bushtit photograph was taken in BC, Canada

The American bushtit is one of the smallest passerines in North America, at 11 cm (4.3 in) in length and 5–6 g (0.18–0.21 oz) in weight.

Cradled amongst the yellow blooms of Horseshoe Vetch this, our smallest butterfly, was a charming sight. The wingspan of an adult can be as little as 16mm. Adult Small Blues nectar almost exclusively from Common Bird's-foot-trefoil, Horseshoe Vetch or Kidney Vetch.

Thank you all for your kind responses.

A Least Chipmunk (Eutamias minimus borealis) is observed feeding in the same general area as the Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrel posted the other day. The two species will co-habitat the same general area to the benefit of each other by warning of potential predators.

The rocky slopes of the Rocky Mountain landscape in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada are a truly enjoyable place to spend some quality time with a variety of wildlife species.

Getting close to this Small Blue was very difficult. The foliage that surrounded him was quite lethal. Carsington Water. Derbyshire. England.

We had a small flock, 5, of Bushtits (Psaltriparus minimus) visit our suet feeder yesterday. I think they only sit in one place for two seconds each stop!

I think...

I was waiting by a Golden Mantle burrow for about an hour. The GM was a no show, but this little one came along and climbed the downed branch. After giving me a hello nod, it began to nibble on the grass seeds. (I may have imagined that last part)

We are Los Angeles adjacent. Santa Monica. Los Angeles is really spread out...... and fires are raging near the foothills. We live near the coast and are safe.

Time for, as Jan says www.flickr.com/photos/jan-timmons/ , bird therapy.

Here is one of our local birds. A Bushtit, and a little lady too!

They might travel in a big busy pack this time of year. Their contact calls are soft but energetic.

A bit of comfort to hear.

Prayers for all those impacted by Harvey and the fires.

"Aside from being among the tiniest songbirds, Bushtits are worth breaking out the binoculars for because what they lack in coloration, they make up for in personality. They live in flocks almost year round, foraging for food. They also use this social network for their safety. When they spot a hawk or some other bird of prey, they create what birders call the confusion cloud. They move closer together, repeatedly trilling, which creates a swarm or noise that confuses the predator", according to the book, Birds at Your Feeder: A Guide to Feeding Habits, Behavior, Distribution, and Abundance, by Erica Dunn and Diane L. Tessaglia-Hymes.
