One of my saved "favorite" Hipstamatic filter combinations, demonstrated on a typical outdoor landscape scene.
I use the Hipstamatic iOS app to have some fun with simple photographs. I am not looking to accurately reproduce the scene in front of the camera, but to introduce some characteristics that enhance the story that I am trying to tell with the image.
The Hipstamatic app uses a simple but powerful method of applying filter combinations to the original digital image from the camera to alter the "look" of the image. I could use the filters in the other apps such as VSCO or Instagram to achieve similar results, but I just happen to like the structure and quirkiness of the Hipstamatic app.
Many of the combinations that I keep as "favorites" have a look that reminds me of the way that photographs or slides looked when I was growing up. Whether this is an accurate reproduction or not, it is the way that I remember them.

The upper floors of the InterContinental Adelaide command many fine views to the west, north and east. For this photograph, I positioned the setting Sun in the center, splitting the scene into two with the River Torrens on the right, and various multi-story buildings, some still under construction, on the left.
The roof of the Adelaide Convention Centre (ACC) complex is present in the foreground. It is undergoing renovation and expansion.
Cranes are present on the site of the University of Adelaide Health and Medical Sciences buildings.
The striking building further along North Terrace is the SAHMRI building (SA Health and Medical Research Institute), with its distinctive external lattice of steel beams that is reminiscent of the Beijing National Stadium (a.k.a. Bird's Nest).
The building with a green facade is the New Royal Adelaide Hospital (NRAH).
Altogether, it was a very calming scene. I took my time to photograph it, and this served as a really good way to transition from a hectic work day to a relaxing evening.

I came across this rather elegant flower when making my way home from Kingston. "Naked Lady" plants have a very unusual form - i.e., a single stem topped by a flower head with several flowers. No leaves.
The look of this photograph suggests that it is was shot in a studio. I can reassure you that it was photographed on-site, with natural lighting. The early afternoon Sunlight lit up the flower. The stem was lit indirectly courtesy of reflections, scattering, etc. And the background was in deep shadow. As part of the post-processing, I made this background even darker, to the point that it is virtually impossible to see any real variation in it.
P.S., This was the first time that I have used Aurora HDR from Macphun to process a bracketed set of iPhone photographs. More than most dedicated cameras, the camera system of the iPhone is "challenged" by sensor noise and dynamic range limitations. It should therefore benefit more than dedicated cameras from the HDR process of combining multiple images with different exposures into a single image that has broader dynamic range that any of the single input images. The geometric alignment process for the input images did a good job of preserving resolution, and I thought that it lived up to promises with respect to dynamic range.

The warm summer weather has brought out many moths and other nocturnal insects. At the same time, the Kamerar company has released a pair of lens attachments to supplement the "native" capabilities of the dual lenses of the iPhone 7 Plus (see link below). These events have allowed me to try out the macro lens attachment on some of my favorite subjects - moths.
This is a simple but rather plain more-or-less overhead shot of a moth that I saw one morning. I wouldn't normally post a photograph that presented this basic composition, but in this instance, it makes it easier to appreciate the features and colors that are present in other photographs of this moth that I shall be posting. The use of the macro lens attachment when taking the other photographs allowed me to highlight different parts of the moth. However, in some instances (and for some people), the extreme and unusual perspectives could make it more difficult to understand the relationships between different physical features and the colors of these features.

The opportunity to gaze out of a window is a constant highlight of traveling and staying in city hotels. After a hectic day of business, there is nothing better than pulling back the curtains and staring out at the city lights. They have the same hypnotic, mesmerizing, and calming effect as the flames of a fire.
A few nights before this photograph was taken, the stands at the Adelaide Oval were lit in green and gold, whilst the walkway and the railings of the bridge spanning the River Torrens was both lit with yellow lights.
www.flickr.com/photos/momentsforzen/28970875550/
On this night, however, the stands were a lovely sky blue, the railings of the walkway were lit with a curved line of color-coordinated purple lights, and the pavement of the bridge was left without lighting. The twin towers and spires of St Peter's Cathedral were brightly lit with floodlights with fairly standard warm daylight yellow/orange color.
Interesting tidbit of information : The indigenous name for the River Torrens is "Karrawirra Parri" which translates to "red gum forest river"

A close-up of one of the opal gift sets that were given to each of the presenters at our conference workshop. Opal is the official Australian and South Australian State gemstone, and these sets seemed to thus be appropriate gifts at an international Earth Science (Geology/Geophysics) event. For scale, the larger stone is 8 mm across. I personally like the dark matrix of "black opal" in comparison with white or milky opal - the dark background greatly enhances the colors. The triplet presentation (i.e., a thin slice of opal sandwiched between a dark base layer and a clear, domed quartz cap) makes the stones more robust (and cheaper to produce!).

The majority of my photographs are shot and processed in a way whereby they have an appearance that is close to the scene as it appeared at the time. But in some instances, I am tempted to apply more transformational filtering to create an image that takes me to another time and place. There are many popular apps that facilitate this type of processing (e.g., Instagram, VSCO, Enlight, Snapseed, etc). Sometimes, I use these apps, but for the most part, I stick to Hipstamatic.
Looking at the narrow, wedge-shaped corner of this apartment block, a connection with the iconic Flatiron Building (Manhattan, USA) entered my mind. I immediately thought that this scene was a good candidate for some filtering to take the viewer to a alternate reality (i.e., the presence of a variety of elements that are composed and lit in a good manner).
I shall be following up this post with a selection of these filtered images.

There are many apps that attempt to reproduce a sepia tone. I think that this Hipstamatic combination produces some rather good results.
- Color - The color of the sepia toning is quite attractive - some emulations are too dark, others are not a very pleasant shade of brown.
- Texture - Close inspection of the image shows that an excellent "paper" texture is present. This background texture is tastefully modified with dust spots, creases, smudges, and scratches.
- Lighting - The exposure of the image has been altered during filtering to produce an image that showcases the sepia coloring better - the building is darker, whilst the sky is brighter and more evenly exposed. This provides an opportunity for the filter effects (texture, color, etc) to shine through.
- Frame / Border - As per the texture, the broad white border is given a realistically aged appearance.
----------
Background information for sepia toning ...
Apparently, sepia toning of photographs was first carried out in the 1880's. Sepia toner was applied to a B&W print, resulting in the conversion of the metallic silver to a silver sulphide-based compound. The warm sepia coloring is produced immediately upon application of the toner - it is not a consequence of aging at all!

The primary lens on the iPhone 7 Plus has a focal length of 3.99mm which is equivalent to 28mm for a full frame sensor (35mm).

Hipstamatic - Selected the unfiltered photograph.
Hipstamatic - Applied a number of "favorite combinations" (i.e., filters) to the image.
Hipstamatic - Selected the desired combination and made some secondary adjustments to the lighting and colors.
Hipstamatic - Applied a square crop (i.e., 1:1 aspect ratio) and saved the result to the Camera Roll.

The overwhelming majority of my forays into the world of Hipstamatic filters results in B&W (or monochrome) images.
In this instance, I rather liked this color combination. It has many of the elements that are common to my favorite color filter combinations ...
- De-saturated output.
- A cool temperature (i.e., the "white-balance" (WB) is shifted towards blue colors away from red colors).
- Slightly under-exposed.
- Some dark vignetting.
- Subtle texture effects.
- A rough border or frame.
Comparing the original with the Hipstamatic color image, I am first struck by the changes to the sky. Blue sky patches and white fluffy clouds are replaced by grey clouds. These clouds are darkest along the top, giving the scene the appearance of having been photographed with a Graduated Neutral Density Filter. I like the change in mood from a sunny afternoon to a harsher, more dramatic industrial setting. The latter fits well with the Scaffolding, crane and cement hose.
I also like the more subtle changes, notably the border and the texture layer.

A delightful spring afternoon. Many of the photographs of birds that I have posted recently were taken in this park. Black & White (B&W) is the classic photographic genre. It is both simple and complex. For example, in photojournalism, we accept B&W images as being an accurate record of a time and place. Yet, (1) these scenes are colored, and (2) the transformation from color to B&W is not unique (i.e., there are an infinite number of ways to preform this transformation).
Filtering a photograph to produce a B&W image (or more generally, a monochrome image) takes me back to my very first recollections of photography.
- Staring at my baby photographs.
- Being provided with a Twin Lens Reflex (TLR) camera and a 12 exposure roll of B&W film by Doug Matthews when our family were visiting the Matthews and Mahoneys at their summer, beachfront holiday house.
- Annual primary school photographs.
- Family photographs taken on ad hoc excursions to Mt Donna Buang on weekends that followed mid-week low altitude snowfalls around Melbourne.
- Discovering that I could take sharply focused, low grain, evenly lit photographs when Dad gave me a Kowa SLR camera in my early teenage years.
- And many more ...

Dignified thoughts of a mythological creature share space in my brain with memories of the equally fanciful but unrelated vehicles of International Rescue. "5, 4, 3, 2, 1, ... Thunderbirds are go." A reflection of the 1960's - American global influence - optimism and dreams. The super-rich, philanthropy, and the space race. But why use puppets rather than create a cartoon or other format? Especially when there was no real pretense that the characters were anything other than puppets.
Oh, ... I nearly forgot with all this deep thinking going on ... the coffee was sublime - I guess that I shall have to have another so that I can contemplate other mysteries and connections.

The two white shells of the Adelaide Festival Centre dominate this scene. There is a remarkable similarity in overall form and color to the shells of the Sydney Opera House. The two complexes for the arts opened within 3 months of each other in 1973, with the Adelaide Festival centre being opened by the Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon. Gough Whitlam, QC MP, on 2 June 1973 whilst the Sydney Opera House was opened by HM Queen Elizabeth II in the presence of HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, on 20 October 1973.

At this time of the year, it is not uncommon in the hours of darkness to find a selection of scarab beetles that have been drawn to an outside light. It is tempting to refer to them all as "Christmas Beetles", but this is not strictly true. There are 36 "true" (Australian) Christmas Beetles (i.e., Anoplognathus species), but looking at the broader picture, there are more than 30,000 Scarab Beetle species (i.e., species belonging to the Scarabaeidae family), with more than 2,000 known in Australia. Many of these scarab beetles are quite common in Australia - way too many for me to attempt to identify this example. I will rest by calling it a Scarab Beetle, and can eliminate the Australian Christmas Beetles from the possibilities.
Some interesting bits and pieces ...
- Members of the Coleoptera Order have a hardened forewing.
- Dung, Rhinoceros, and Elephant Beetles are Scarab Beetles.
- The beetle featured here has a black head, distinct darker brown markings on the wing covers (elytras) that are folded up over the abdomen and on the thorax.
- It has small maxillary palps flanked by larger antennae.

The InterContinental Adelaide is an octagonal-shaped building with rooms that are arranged around the outside of the building. This leaves a large open space in the central core of the building from top to bottom. In this photograph, we are looking down into this space from the 20th floor, and can see an attractive-looking and well kept atrium garden around 7 floors below.
My first (silly) thought - Was this the garden that I had seen on the meeting room level below the lobby? The answer is obviously "no" - since it must be at the 13th floor or thereabouts. The next time that I was in the lobby, I looked up into the central core and could see that there was a roof 3 to 5 floors above. All this suggests that the core is divided into at least 3 spaces by floor structures at the Meeting Room level, around the 5th floor, and around the 13th floor. I thought that there might be labels next to the lift buttons for the 5th and 13th floors indicating the presence of gardens on these levels, but there wasn't anything there. So, the mystery remains - On which floors are these gardens? Are they accessible by guests?
Reflecting upon this subject later, it occurred to me that I have stayed in this hotel many times but I have never seen anybody in the gardens in the core spaces!
