We don't chase happiness. It's just a byproduct of our deeper inner joy. The joy that comes from inner peace. And inner peace isn't possible without mindfulness. Our modern society has more often than not been sabotaging much of our peace of mind. In fact, and seemingly paradoxically, wherever and whenever we are, happiness should not be the main pursuit, if we want to truly be 'happy'. What we actually need is not happiness, but that kind of deep, self-fulfilling joy that stems from mindfulness. Mindfulness brings forth joy or joy brings about happiness? We might ask. They're very much the same, honestly. People give different names to the same essence. It's the relaxedly aware, calmly in control state of consciousness. So briefly, make mindfulness our main pursuit and happiness will automatically follows. Do not do the other way around, i.e. chase after happiness by means of heavily worldly sensual pleasures. Put mindfulness the first priority. That's pretty much among the only few things we can really do for now.
