The Linsinger Rail Milling Machine was delivered brand new from Austria onto the East Lancs Railway for commissioning trials. The unit numbers are DR97102/3. Both units were delivered by road. On the evening of 19th November the unit was on test in Baron Street yard.
Mr. Mustain stopped to talk when he saw me taking photos of an old building at Second Creek, WV. He told me the history, then suggested that my wife and I might want to see the old grist mill that he has owned and operated for years. I followed him to the mill and he opened up and we chatted for a while. He kindly allowed me to take photos and gave us a sample of stone-ground cornmeal ground at the mill. Reed's Mill has been in operation since 1791.
The mill was dimly lit by sunlight filtering in through the windows, and a few bare bulbs hanging from the ceiling, I set my ISO high and aperture wide-open. With slow shutter speeds, I braced for each exposure the best that I could.
I hope you enjoy the series. I'll be back to Reed's Mill in the near future.

Temperature 38F. March in Colorado can have extremes of temperature, wind, and precipitation. Twenty-two years ago on this date we were in the midst of a Spring snowstorm that brought 30 to 36 inches of snow to Denver, and up to 10 feet in towns just 20 miles to the west, up in the Front Range.
Well Derbyshire County Council are investing £40m in road repairs. So the residents of Hathersage are well pleased as they are getting the roads done in style with this state of the art road milling machine. Which despite it's camouflage has not gone unnoticed.
Well Bobby 'red socks' Dazzler is keen to impress the ladies and show his milling machine off so he has parked it outside Cintra's Tea Rooms while he goes inside for his tea break.
Parking restricted to 40 minutes no return within the hour.

The load is Schweerbau High Speed Milling Machine DR79601, a three-vehicle fixed-formation unit, also carrying the European Vehicle Number 99 70 94 27 063-1 D-SBAU - a UK number, but with a German Vehicle Keeper Mark!
This is a lightsaber I made in my home shop using an 8x14" lathe and Bridgeport style mill. Its made of mostly aluminum and brass and is the first semi-complex project I've machined. It still needs the switch and arrow-lights added to the control box, but is otherwise very closely modelled after the "Return of the Jedi" Luke V1 Hero model lightsaber.

A smaller 1/14 scale model of the Bridgeport was completed by Barry Jordan in late January 2000. It took 17 weeks (640 hours) to complete. It stands only 7.8" high and was made from cast iron billet material. It runs on a miniature Swiss 1.5 Volt DC motor that Barry runs using 3 VDC.
Built by Barry J. Jordan.

Some of the milling machinery located inside Alley Mill, in rural Shannon County Missouri. The mill is open weekdays during the summer, and visitors can view the old equipment still in place, learning more about the history of Alley Spring & Mill. This was a 30-second exposure, and you can see ghosting in the image from people walking through.

Well, why not shoot objects from time to time--it is fun, to try to make them look good!
These photos were shot at our University (www.h-ab.de) at the lab of Prof. Volpe, for a publication about PCB prototyping.

STROBIST
Two speedlites, manually adjusted, one on the left side shooting through a diffusor, on on the right side, with a blue gel, shooting against a silver reflector (actually: it was the cover of the diffusor, taped to the wall). The speedlites were triggered via YN-602 RF transmitters. Still my favorite work horses. :-)

PHOTOSHOP
Not that much, the usual cloning and stuff.
For the right one I stacked two shots to get the drill and also the logo sharp.
Why not close the aperture for that purpose?
Because that would need too much flash power and furthermore the lens would be not that sharp anymore (not on the "critical aperture" setting).
Why not zoom out?
Yes, that would give me the DOF I wanted, but the perspective would change (cropping would have been ok, there's plenty of resolution left). I tried that and I did not like the wide-angle perspective.
So I just did two shots with varied focus and aligned these in Photoshop (btw.: Photoshop did a good job regarding the aligment and a bad job regarding the merging, so I did the merging my hand).
