The march started around 5:30pm with a somewhat disorganized start. The idea was the banners would be in the front of the march, but that idea was sometimes forgotten. The crowd seemed restless and walked fast. That might have been because it was 25 degrees out. The march turned onto Hiawatha Avenue, which blocked northbound traffic. Police cars rode behind and ahead of the march.

Common chants during the march:

No justice. No peace. Prosecute the police.

Hands up. Don't shoot.

When I say Michael, you say Brown. Michael. Brown. Michael. Brown.

Washington DC, Wednesday December 10, 2014. Around 200 social justice activists assembled at the Pennsylvania Avenue entrance to the US Department Of Justice in a Vigil For Delegation Of Grieving Mothers who've lost sons to police violence. Many of the women spoke movingly about the loss of their sons and of their experience seeking but not finding justice. The event was hosted by Mothers Against Police Brutality, CODEPINK, National Congress Of Black Women and Hands Up DC Coalition. The killing of Trayvon Martin by cop wannabe George Zimmerman and the failure by grand juries to indict the police officers who killed Michael Brown and Eric Garner have reenergized the movement against police brutality. Many of the women present here tonight have been working on this issue for decades.

Washington DC, December 13, 2014. Reverend Al Sharpton of National Action Network joins with the families of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice and others in a "Justice For All" rally and march to protest police violence and racism. A diverse crowd of tens of thousands assembled at Freedom Plaza and marched down Pennsylvania Avenue towards the US Capitol for a rally with speeches by Sharpton and others.

Interactions between the demonstrators and police were generally cordial during the 'official' phases of the event but got contentious when a relatively small raucous, radical faction, shouting "we shut shit down", later decided to take over busy 7th Street , blocking traffic, staging a 'die in' near the Smithsonian American Art Museum and briefly occupying a tent at a nearby holiday street market. Some of the younger activists in this group had occupied the main event stage for a time in an effort to get their concerns voiced but were silenced when the Justice For All organizers cut off their microphones. There is definitely tension in the anti police violence movement between older now establishment figures like Sharpton who prefer working through the system and the mainly college age activists who've embraced relentless non-violent civil disobedience street action as one of their most important tactics.

Protestors marched from Honolulu Zoo to the Kuhio McDonald's where Christopher Deedy fired the shot that killed Kollin Elderts, and joined #Ferguson demonstrators in chanting "Hands up, don't shoot."

November 25, 2014 around 4:30pm

The crowd swelled to about 3000 people and speakers talked from on top of a rental truck. By 4:30pm the crowd was growing too large for the sidewalk, and there was a mass movement of people into the intersection of Lake Street and Minnehaha Avenue.

When the intersection was initially blocked with people, one car continued to move right through the people and ended up runnig over a young woman. Video of that event has been widely circulated. Later, the crowd parted to let the ambulance through to pick up the injured, and the rally continued.

The march was around 2000 people. Some marchers crossed over into the southbound traffic, which was at a standstill, and walked through the cars. Around 20 protesters walked down the ramp to I-35 to consider marching down the interstate highway. The rest of the march continue north on Hiawatha. The march stopped for 15 minutes to create a rally at Augsburg College.

Common chants during the march:

No justice. No peace. Prosecute the police.

Washington DC, August 8, 2015. Around five hundred social justice activists and supporters gathered near the African American Civil War Memorial in memory of Mike Brown who was killed by cop Darren Wilson one year ago in Ferguson, Missouri. There was a rally with speeches and a boisterous march through the streets resulting in some planned traffic stoppages.

Washington DC, Tuesday evening November 25, 2014. Around twenty five hundred social justice activists gathered at Mount Vernon Square for a rally and march to protest the failure of the St. Louis County, Missouri Grand Jury to indict Officer Darren Wilson for the killing of unarmed black teenager Mike Brown. The marchers blocked several intersections for brief periods of time and occupied the H Street Walmart Superstore for about fifteen minutes. The nearly two hour long march ended on the steps of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. Interactions between the marchers and police were testy at times but there were no arrests I am aware of.

Washington DC, December 5, 2014. Activists protesting the failure to indict killer cops Darren Wilson and Daniel Pantaleo gather in Chinatown for a rally, 'die in' and meandering march through the northwest quadrant of the city. I counted around two hundred at the 'die in', and about one hundred still present as the mostly youthful crowd stormed up gentrified 14th St. Interactions between the marchers and police were peaceful and respectful. There were no arrests I am aware of. Similar actions were taking place all across the USA. They will almost certainly continue to occur unless there is some meaningful reform of policing culture and practice, especially as it impacts communities of color.

Washington DC, August 15, 2015. Around five hundred social justice activists and supporters gathered in Lafayette Park and on Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House to participate in the Blackout DC 2015 rally and march against police and vigilante killings of people of color. This groundbreaking event was planned by three young black women. Great job, ladies. Because of you the world changed a little bit for the better today. I'm happy to report that the crowd was much younger (and more stylishly attired...) than we're used to seeing at DC protests. After some brief remarks by the organizers there was a meandering and boisterous march through the streets resulting in some brief traffic stoppages. There was no conflict between the marchers and the police and no arrests I'm aware of.

After installing the latest Babylon version 6, I couldn't resist testing the NLP-famous-example-sentence I've learned from my best friend's father, a computer expert, some 15 years ago... time flies like an arrow.

Does it mean, "time flies" like an arrow?

or does it mean, time (as in space-time) flies like an arrow?

or does it mean, time (as a verb) flies like an arrow?

You can't know, out of context, what the sentence is supposed to mean, hence the trouble for Natural Language Processing programs.

Babylon chose the latter...

Peaceful protest in Oakland, California following the no indictment decision for the killing of Michael Brown by Darren Wilson in Ferguson, St. Louis, Missouri. This march led from 14th & Broadway in Oakland to various corners of the perimeter. Even in the middle of Interstate 580 freeway two times. The looting and fires were started by those whom dare not show their face, for their intentions are not in lined with those mourning for the lives of youth of color across the world and across the nation at the hands of a systematic oppressor. during these protests, time after time, people come from all over the region to incite violence in protests in oakland. let it be known that this protest started after the no indictment decision by the grand jury as a "die-in"; where people outlined their bodies in chalk in the street. the same way that is done in a murder scene. this act of protest is peaceful and in no way incites violence against the city we call home. only those whom dont have to wake up the next morning to broken windows and garbage would do such a thing. It's hard to distinguish those kinds of people in times of civil unrest and they know this. stay secure minded.

Jamar Clark was shot and killed by Minneapolis police officers on November 15, 2016. The protesters demand that officers Mark Ringgenberg and Dustin Schwarze be charged with second-degree murder or manslaughter. On March 30, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced the officers who killed Jamar Clark will not be charged.

Washington DC, U Street, Saturday Evening September 6, 2014. A diverse group of around 200 social justice activists affiliated with The Answer Coalition, American Muslim Alliance, National Black United Front, Party For Socialism And Liberation and other groups gathered at the African American Civil War Memorial for a short March To U St. For Mike Brown to the intersection of 14th and U St. This historic crossroads was occupied by the demonstrators for around five minutes. The march then proceeded west on U St. until an intense thunderstorm scattered most of the participants. The gentleman on the left made a better choice than this photographer; he anticipated the possible weather variables and prepared accordingly. My wife asked me if we should pack umbrellas and I decided (unwisely...) that it was not justified by a 40% chance of rain.
