The past few days we got to witness the great migration of cranes again in the eastern parts of the Netherlands. I get goose bumps every time I see them fly over, making their distinctive calls to the rest of the flock. A few years ago I managed to photograph flying cranes near a rising sun. Ever since then I had the wish to photograph them flying directly in front of the sun to really make out a nice silhouette. Earlier this week that wish came true. I got to a location where I knew they often spend the night during the migration north and saw eight of them standing in the water. I positioned myself between the cranes and the sunrise and waited for them to take flight. A few minutes after sunrise, the sun disappeared behind the clouds. “No luck this Spring”, I remember myself thinking. The cranes eventually took off 30 minutes later. While I was following them in the viewfinder, I suddenly saw them flying in front of a rising sun! The sun had appeared above the clouds again, and not only that, there was a nice horizontal cloud above it to give some more power to the photograph. Every now and then things just seem to come together and this week was my turn.

Cape May Warbler in migration

Last December I went to Bordeaux to watch cranes on migration. A rare opportunity to 'go full nerd', and it was truly amazing, a genuine natural spectacle not far from our shores. And if we can restore our countryside from its ecologically degraded state, they will come back here too.

A herd of long legged elephant sculptures escaped from the Salvador Dali Museum in Monterey and were seen heading South across the dunes in Glamis California.

I keep reading how the migration patterns have changed for

ducks and geese. They don't migrate where and when they use to . . . say 50 to 75 years ago.

Hey, this isn't Waikiki Beach on Oahu! It's northern Iowa, where we've had snow, wind and freezing rain already. Aren't you Canadians going south yet?

Eh?

Lots of warblers coming through our property in northern NJ right now. Magnolia Warbler, perfectly posed under a bit of goldenrod. (And not a terrific photo, but, hey - sometimes it's about capturing the moment.

Merci et à bientôt.

The entire time we were at Kohler Andrae State Park during our hike, there were cormorants migrating north along Lake Michigan. They use the lake as a migration highway and we would see a few of them here and there, then long streams of them. They were quite the site!

Fall Migration 2015

The southward migration is underway through Texas!

Red-Bellied Woodpecker (female)

10 inches in length. Barred black and white above, pale buff below and on face. The male and female are similar except that the male has a red crown and nape while the female has a red nape only. Their reddish patch on lower abdomen is seldom visible in the field.

Its habitat includes open and swampy woodlands. It also comes into parks during migration and feeders in winter.

They range from South Dakota east through the Great Lakes and into southern New England and south to the Gulf Coast and Florida. Although not a migratory bird, some of the northern most birds will sometimes migrate south for the winter.

It has been a busy week for me, and it is finally only now that I have a precious bit of time to upload a new shot. It may take some time for me to upload the next shot, as I am currently in the middle of data migration to a new PC, with hopefully better Lightroom processing. In the meantime, like this lady vendor here at Maeklong Market, the time will pass by so fast before one knows it.

The Tundra Swan migration is in full swing here along the Upper Mississippi River flyway. A magical time of the year. The family in the picture has the parents in the front and rear with the two siblings in the middle. Safe journeys! Photographed from the Shady Maple Overlook in northwestern Vernon County, Wisconsin.

On a good day you might see 120,000 geese on the pond. Here is one group of about 10,000 taking off.

There are so many, they are leaving the frame !!!

A revisit to a picture I worked on with some friends, 8 years ago to this very day.

Originally taken in my magical garden at the time "Puzzlewood" the Fay and friends have now migrated to "Seawinds" which will also disappear to the winds of Second Life very soon (in its current form anyway)

For some reason I wasn't confident enough in my abilities to post the picture I took all those years ago which is a shame but you can see my friend Huw's original version here:

You can also see Huw's recent version of this picture at this link:

No matter how the magical mists unfold as Seawinds is born again, Fay and friends will always be welcome ♥

Happy First Day of Autumn!

Spring migration is now in full swing, locally, and each day brings in old favorite bird species, and sometimes a new 'lifer'...the similarity to Easter egg hunting is strong, as I look for colors that stand out along the trails! Male Scarlet Tanagers stand out for extreme distances, with their incredible Day-Glow, neon bright red plumage! Thankfully, there was only a few feet distance between me and this stunner and a slightly younger male Scarlet yesterday!

There were thousands of monarchs resting in trees and plants on the south shore of Lake Erie before making the long flight to their winter resting grounds in Mexico.

As you can see, definitely not suitable for everyone.
