Danby railway station serves the village of Danby in the parish of Danby, North Yorkshire, England. It is on the Esk Valley Line, known as the Herb Line
The "Herb Line" runs from Middlesborough to Whitby linking with the North Yorkshire Moors steam railway at Grosmont
The Danby station was operational in 1865 when the line opened.
About a mile and a half from the station lies the Moors National Park Centre, a former shooting lodge and now the main information centre for the National Park
So this was an interesting find on our very short first day in Iceland (after the flight, picking up the campervan, picking up a rented 4G mi-fi and doing some shopping we managed to get to our first destination late late in the evening.
Interesting on our way was this bridge which we saw at some distance, got off the road and walked up there: the bridge was made by an English Company from Middlesborough as we learned from a plaque. Nowadays the bridge has been replaced by a more modern one nearby but we loved this one more.
middlesborough, detail of one of several buildings in the prosaically named 'centre square' which were erected a few years ago but never occupied. this one has been squashed a little i must admit. for more images in the vrbs series, click here

Close inspection of the two missing hoods indicates they're not missing, but simply slid to one side.

Nunthorpe on a wet Autumn dawn. The driver crosses to await the RHTT from Carlisle Kingmoor, probably to provide a crew change, whilst Northern 156484 also waits for the RHTT to free the single line for its imminent departure to Middlesborough.

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the modern railway. The Stockton and Darlington line was opened back in 1825 and soon became the inspiration behind many of the other early railway pioneer companies. There have been a number of events and celebrations that have occurred during this year, all of which I have missed for various reasons.
This photo depicts a 1957 shunter, 08600 which has been plinthed on a roundabout in Middlesborough. My photo was taken whilst at work when I spotted it from a nearby dual carriageway. A quick detour and short delay to my working schedule allowed me to take this and few other photos.
...we shall have snow, so the saying goes & twas correct as the following day there was snow on these ere ills.

Commondale station is on the "Herb Line" which runs from Middlesborough to Whitby linking with the North Yorkshire Moors railway at Grosmont. There are 4 or 5 trains either way per day.
The station gardens are maintained locally and in the waiting room there is a beautiful mural dedicated to a local lady.
Commondale village is located between Kildale and Eskdale in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park

It doesn't take much imagination from looking at this image as to what might happen in the not too distant future. Substantial erosion and land slip has taken place at Hunts Cliff, and the line is only a few yards from the 300 foot drop to the North Sea below.

The River Tees flows for 85 miles. It rises just below Cross Fell and flows to the North Sea at Middlesborough. Many years ago l walked long sections of the Pennine Way and this is one location that l remember very well.
High Force is situated near Middleton in Teesdale a very beautiful village further down river. This picture was taken a few years ago in what was a season of drought. The water level was very low when l took this shot. I have seen this place in heavy rain where water has flowed over the top in dramatic fashion just to the right on the high point of this picture.. The water is brown in colour stained by the peat moor lands from which it came. Walking a part of the Pennine Way with a heavy load on your back on a hot day can be torture especially when you are tired. This river was very inviting to sit in it for half an hour to cool down which is what l did.

Viewed from Kinley Hill south of Dawdon, the North Sea sparkes as one of the widely disliked 4-wheel railbuses heads towards Hartlepool while working the 1645 Hexham to Middlesborough service.
In the foreground can be seen the trackbed of a long-abandoned rail line that served a quarry at Kinley Hill while in the far distance the coastlines of Cleveland and North Yorkshire are visible.
