This once proud fortress, was in its heyday the largest castle in all of Eastern Bavaria. Through mismanagement it is now only a shadow of itself.

However, now the help of archaeologists and a non-profit association will not only get the castle, but partially rebuilt.

Continuing to sift through my computer for previously not uploaded shots - the original was quite bland (and rather overexposed) but was fun to put through some photo editing.

This Belgian abbey church, now in ruins as the rest of the place, was built in the Romanesque style, and had arches added to it in the 13th century. This was a Cistercian abbey, founded in 1146 - but it was abandoned after 1796 and the French revolution.

In the Abbaye Saint-Léger in Soissons. The crypt was made in two phases, first a Romanesque crypt in the late 11th century, and then a choir added around 1200.

The monastery of San Juan de la Peña is a religious complex in the town of Santa Cruz de la Serós, at the south-west of Jaca, in the province of Huesca, Spain. It was one of the most important monasteries in Aragon in the Middle Ages. Its two-level church is partially carved in the stone of the great cliff that overhangs the foundation. San Juan de la Peña means "Saint John of the Cliff".

In the Gothic cathedral in Soissons, dedicated to Saint Gervais and Saint Protais. The building-work was started in 1177 and finished in 1479. It was severely damaged in the first world war, but later restored - a task that was completed in 1937.

Interior from the church Saint Pierre in Lion-sur-Mer. The church was built in the 11th century - but extensively rebuilt in later times, and the nave dates to 1906 (it was expanded to be able to accommodate the summer guests to the town so they could come to mass).

At Mont Saint-Michel, for more than 1,300 years, great history has mixed with the personal stories of its monks, inhabitants, pilgrims and visitors.

Oui, j'aimerais tellement y croire

Si seulement, si seulement, je pouvais

Oh oui, j'aimerais tellement le voir

Si seulement, si seulement, je pouvais

The difference between a "Burg" and a "Schloss" (castle) is that a Burg is more like a fortress, built for protection from the enemies, and a Schloss was for the nobility to reside in, and very lavishly decorated.

Over time, some of the Burgs were also turned into castles.

Burg Eltz is somewhat unusual, in that it's been in the same family that had it built over 850 years ago, and Count and Countess Eltz still live there today.

The village church of Leppin, Germany. The church is medieval and dates to the 13th century (but the tower, you can see a hint of, dates to 1843).

The name 'Amersfoort' derives from 'foort' or 'voorde' (cf. English 'ford') and 'Amer' (i.e. the Eem river, or water in general).

Thanks to it favourable location, both on the water router (over the Eem river to the Zuiderzee) and land route (from Utrecht Eastward and Northward) the agricultural settlement developed into a small town, which in 1259 was granted city rights by the Bishop of Utrecht.

The city had two centres: het Havik, first mentioned in 1390,(which could come from "bend in a river" or "habour area") and de Hof (the Court and first mentioned in 1462). Het Havik was the city's port and its business centre. De Hof, prior to the granting of city rights, was the location of the residence of the Bishop's representatives and the city church, the St. Joriskerk (the Church of St. George). In 1132 there is a chapel mentioned, which later would become the St. Joriskerk (1243 the built was started and in 1534 it would become the church that it is now).

The whole city was walled, orginally by an earthen wall, later by a stone wall. Some remains can still be seen. For instance, in the Langestraat (Lit.: the Longstreet) we find the remains of the Kamperbinnenpoort (The Innergate to Kampen, a city in the nothern part of Holland) and on the Muurhuizen (wallhouses) we see the remains of the Plompetoren, also know as the Dieventoren (lit: Thieves Tower, refering to the city jail located here [first mentioned as a prison in 1434] in the 19th century, last used in 1862).

One of the Gothic brick churches (in German, this style is known as Backsteingotik) in Wismar. This one, built 1380-1508, took its inspiration from French cathedrals, despite using another building material. The result is a very tall building with a nave that reaches 37 metres.

The abbey Saint Léger in Soissons was founded in 1139 - but with later, Gothic additions. The place suffered heavy damage by protestants in 1567. Today it is a museum - I would highly recommend a visit if you are there (you can enter both church and crypt via the museum).

Trachili is an isolated beach with grit, sand and pebbles at the west coast of Chios island, included in Lithi cove. The sea has a blue-green tone. At the left side of the beach, there is a peninsula, at the top of which is a turret, used in the Middle Ages as an observation point to the open seas for pirates or other attacks.

Saint Jacob Parish Church

The church built in the Árpád era is one of the most beautiful and undamaged representative of Romanesque church architecture in Hungary.

No wonder that the church stands out from its environment because it used to be a part of a larger monastery complex as donation documents show from 1208 (by Andrew II). The earliest date that proves the existence of the church itself is 1206 carved on its wall outside.

In contrast with the facade expressing the simple strictness of Romanesque style is the gateway with its rich floral ornamentation. The mural of the archfield was created in the 19th cencury.

After an adventurous and rugged past the church today awaits visitors fully restored.

Of a small settlement to the Ee in the 10th century it developed into an important city, where trade, industry and fishery thrived. By growing prosperity and look to the commonalty of Zierikzee on March 11th 1248 municipal right was granted king. After the medieval flowering period calamity emergency with fires, shipping disasters, epidemics and floods followed.

The 17th century characterised himself by second flowering of the trade and fishery. Then the number of inhabitants stepped very drastic in the course of the 18th century stagnation and decreased. The large industrial developments went to Zierikzee past for the greater part. In contrast to other cities old buildings remained saved. The wealth to monuments is mainly considered as a precious possession and in 1970s has been discovered by the tourists.

Nowadays Zierikzee is, with wide 10,000 inhabitants, the administrative seat of the new and has in this a centre function. In the historical town centre with a lot of shops and sociable pavements it is for both the tourist and inhabitant well stays.
