I’m sorry about these old/not so old benches. They’ve been replaced by a remake of the landscaped grounds. They were memorials. What now happens about that? Were promises made in exchange for money? Unfortunately, these are not “happy benches”. Lawrence Hall of Science, UC Berkeley.

Despite their unusual mid-century modern design, the benches were very comfortable! As you can imagine, they shed rainwater very effectively! I sat on them to enjoy several picnic lunches not so long ago--they had a lovely view of the San Francisco Bay!

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area but spend a lot of time in a second home in the Palm Springs area in California where there are a lot of structures that were built during the Mid-Century era of American design and architecture. There are a lot of homes that preserve the aesthetic but this neon-lit car wash sign on Highway 111 always remind me of the style whenever I pass by it.

ODC: Known For

This space in the original house was a pantry -- with the door on the tiled wall -- and about 20'' of the master bedroom foyer. A powder room was first built here during the 1992 remodel. As in the main bathroom, the big cabinet is a stock laminate item, while the light box, valance and medicine cabinet are custom maple.

This was the Smith Motor Co. Ford Dealership established in 1925. Ownership changed down through the years and it finally closed permanently in 2001. It's now a showroom for some fine vintage autos owned by a local merchant. High winds from a storm damaged one of the windows, hence the plywood. Great brick work and a fine Ford ghost sign too. Gotta thank the Childress Public Library, Childress County Heritage Museum and Wilson's Garage for identifying the dealership.

"Chance Encounter" was a piece of work done in the 60's in Flora's private collection. It was one of the original pieces of art that was featured in the Jim Flora exhibit.

Just look at the colors. It was even better in person.

We will be having half of our hitchin' events here. It's a teeny vintage motel that has been preserved/converted to a boutique, period-themed spot. I'm a sucker for all things mid-century. For a while, we were looking at another locale—an outdoorsy, raw sort of place, which we loved just as much… but they turned out to be a little flaky. Not to be deterred… we decided to turn this into a two-day thing… so events at this location will be on day two, and day one can be outdoorsy and delightful. Best of both worlds!
