With brakes squealing and dynamic brakes humming, a heavy Union Pacific loaded coal train eases down the steep two percent grade into Leyden, Colorado, with a three locomotive set of mid-train DPU’s providing additional restraining power to fight gravity, at sunrise on January 26, 2007.

Something new Norfolk Southern is doing out of Norfolk, Va is putting mid DPU's on their hopper trains. Here NS 821 heads west under the coaling tower in Vicker, Va with a pair of DPU's.

Still looking like the Southern Pacific, a Union Pacific coal train descends the loop at Coal Creek Canyon west of Clay, Colorado. The lead AC4400CWs are passing the detector at mile 22.6, while the mid-train DPUs are dropping down the two-percent grade in the background on January 18, 1998.

The ZSCLB's mid-train DPU blasts by the signal at the west end of Erie, as the train picks up more and more speed racing for the California border just twenty miles away.

Only took one double over to depart..

Thirteen and a half thousand horsepower creeps out of 308 as a super beefy eleven-thousand foot Fresno Manifest departs West Colton. From here it's a typical PSR nightmare climb Cajon and Ansel setout at Fleta, then up and down Tehachapi pass to work Bakersfield then finally head for Fresno. As power for the outbound North Platte sits off to the left in 310, while BNSF 6857 airs up the Barstow Interchange train in 307; waiting for additional units to come off the westbound train.

The lead locomotives of an eastbound Union Pacific coal train are about to take down the signals at the west end of Rocky, Colorado, on August 11, 2015, as three mid-train DPUs pass by just moments out of Big 10 Curve. The middle AC4400CW was originally meant to be converted to 6,000-h.p. and still wears the defunct UP slogan of “We will deliver.”

Always liked the self-steering trucks on these, as the not super clean but not super dirty happy medium of a potential fallen flag unit, as it works in the Mid-train position right at the Trona-West Elk split of this combo empty train out of Pier G.

This entire fifteen minute debacle has a companion video including the whole missing of the MFRWC front half: youtu.be/cQWB9KNN_6o

In the middle of an eastbound double grain empty are two members of BNSF’s ginormous GE locomotive fleet as the train rolls smartly toward Noxon in a Montana snowstorm on February 6, 2021.

The big four pack of various GE locomotives weren't as impressive rolling downhill as they were going uphill, however the fact that the train was set up like this was still pretty cool.

Placed 50 cars back Mid-Train DPUs with a grand total of 17,000 Horsepower is roaring in all its glory to keep 75 loads of grain moving uphill through Woodford in the now driving rain.

BNSF sent a 4x2x0 grain train westbound through the loop and everything was orange except this scruffy KCSM GE as part of the mid-train DPU's. The AC unit was originally built for the TFM in 1998 as their 2637. After the KCS bought the railroad, it was renumbered and new decals applied. Out of the 75 units in this class, about 34 of them still wear the grey paint.

The day had "warmed up" to -4. All the "core" trains I saw this day had a single DPU 2/3s of the way back in the train, to keep things moving and even more critically to (re)supply air through the frigid train line. This one was the most interesting DPU unit and also the one I got a decent photo of. If anyone know the train numbers for these 3 please share it in the comments below, thanks.
