Vitrectomy surgery (or pars plana vitrectomy) is a frequent surgical treatment used to treat a variety of retinal diseases. These include, to name a few, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, macular pucker, macular hole, and vitreous hemorrhage.

The procedure’s complexity varies greatly depending on the underlying issue. Vitrectomy surgery can be performed alone or in conjunction with scleral buckle surgery to heal retinal detachments.

Three small incisions (about the size of a needle) are made into the white area of the eye known as the sclera. Fluid is delivered into the central area of the eye through these incisions, while the vitreous jelly of the eye is removed using a quick-cutting device.

Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) is carried out under the supervision of an operating microscope. Other instruments, such as microscissors or microforceps, may be introduced into these incisions to perform microsurgery near the retinal surface for more comprehensive operations. These incisions can also be used for laser treatment.
