After working for a number of fashion designers in Damascus, Nazreen Safar set up her own fashion business in 2019 specialising in traditional bead work. At that time it was just her and one other person running the business. in 2021, Nazreen applied for a small grant from AKF to purchase some modern equipment to allow her to develop more sophisticated designs. As part of AKF’s Work and Enterprise programme in Syria, AKF provides grants to businesses which have the potential to grow and create jobs. In 2022, Nazreen received an additional grant which she blended with a loan from AKDN’s First Micro-finance Bank in order to solarise her business which, like much of Syria, had been hampered by intermittent electricity supply. As a result, her business grew by 150% and she was able to hire more staff. Today, she has 15 employees, 9 full time and 6 part time to keep with demand. Nazreen sells to customers across Syria and Lebanon typically for celebratory moments like engagements, weddings and parties. Seen here, one of Nazreen's creations.
