This is an image of Disney's Paradise Pier, inside California Adventure at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim California. This was shot just after the World of Color Show.

Our first time seeing World of Color from front and (nearly) centre, and it was a completely different experience. The meal we had at Wine Country Trattoria was great too, so the package is definitely something we would do again.

I slightly underestimated the wet warning and had to use a cap to cover the camera, there was one particular fountain that soaked us for a good portion of the Pocahontas segment so I had to try and clean up the front of the lens to shoot this. Worth it though!

World of Color - Disney California Adventure

Trying something a little different with my post processing. Still a lot to learn. And I know... I wish the water jet platform wasn't showing, too.

Thanks for looking. Feel free to let me know what you think.

Spinny lights and reflections of spinny lights... who can resist?

The line for the Cove Bar at Disney's California Adventure can be a little overwhelming at times, but the view of Paradise Pier is definitely worth the wait.

The fountains are illuminated by a kaleidoscope of multicolor LED lights.

Viewing Area: Preferred Dining (Blue Section), Front Boardwalk

We had seats in the very front, literally no one was in front of us!! We did get QUITE drenched from the "rain" from the show, but it was worth every freezing cold drop! World of Color is the most beautiful show I have ever seen and I can't wait to see it again! I was lucky that evening too and had the moon right over the Fun Wheel, so I have the moon in every shot I got :) Pretty cool!

The Golden Zephyr screams by as Mickey's Fun Wheel spins too.

I just can't resist photographing moving lights. I'm like a moth to the flame when it comes to shiny, well lit things.

I took this image off my Flickr page, but I'm re-posting it because I think it will be okay.

With Paradise Pier on its way out and Pixar Pier on its way in I decided I need to strike now while the iron is hot with my Paradise Pier shots. This is in fact one of my favorite Paradise Pier shots from my entire trip. The sky was especially magnificent this evening and combined with the evening lights coming out sets a wonderful scene. Finally, a bit of technical talk. I would normally have taken the time to use my tripod for a shot like this, but we were in a hurry to do something else. I ended up just balancing on the rail and was able to get a sharp shot at 1/10 of a second at my base ISO of 64.

World of Color after show

The California Screamin' rollercoaster and Mickey's Fun Wheel at Disney California Adventure Park in Anaheim.

I wanted to take this shot from a position to the right of this point but unfortunately it was roped off for a performance.

I had expected this park to be squarely aimed at young children but there was actually quite a lot to keep a 32 year old big kid like me entertained.

So Beautiful! So Magical! It's the Wonderful World of Color!

The sun was beginning to set over Disney California Adventure and to be honest, I was uninspired to capture the sunset. The sky was clear and the colors were flat, it evoked little emotion. I decided anyway to shoot a bracket of 7 handheld shots and see what I can do in post. After exporting to Photomatix Pro and playing with settings in Topaz and LR I was pleasantly surprised with the dynamic range and overall results.

Wow, it's been a LONG time since I've been on Flickr or even touched my DSLR, I guess that's what happens when school and work get in the way! Last week I finally got the chance to get out and do some shooting, didn't have as much time as I would've liked but hey something is better than nothing! This was about the second time I got to shoot with my new fisheye so theres still a bit of learning with the lens but oh boy is it a lot of fun!

The scene really doesn't need any explanation, with a sky like that who can resist??

As always, comments and constructive criticism are welcome and appreciated! Still don't have a lot of free time lately so I won't be able to catch up with everyone's photos but if you leave a comment I'll be sure to return the favor! :)

Mickey Mouse looks over Paradise Bay with a smile on his face as he awaits the World of Color Show.

Even though this isn't the most photogenic part of the Disneyland Resort, I keep finding myself at Paradise Pier at golden hour to catch the last of the light.

This is a handheld HDR and it's yet another photo that I fully processed in color before deciding that the lines and tones looked much better in monochrome.

Are those star trails or simply the shiny silver rockets of the Golden Zephyr whizzing overhead?

Sadly, DCA wouldn't allow me to stand in one spot all night long to shoot star trails, so the Zephyr will have to suffice.

I know it is World of Color Wednesday but the show was undergoing much needed refurbishment while I was there last week. The lagoon and reflection of the fun wheel make up for it though.

I never really posted many photos after my Disneyland trip (I didn't take a whole lot since it was a busy trip and Jason's first), so I have a few I'll be posting soon.

Here's one that I hated in camera due to the really strong blue tones in the sky, but thanks to some post processing I like it now with an almost white sky. Is that weird? I thought it detracted from the bright flowers in the foreground. Please let me know what you think!

Yeah I have a few of these, but I enjoy all of them.

Paradise Pier at night now boasts Mickey's Fun Wheel.

I took this shot from the bridge leading into Paradise Pier. The night prior we went to watch the nighttime water show World of Color. We were pretty far back in the "Blue" section when I over heard one of the cast members say the best spot to see the show was from the bridge. I made it a point to return the next day to get a shot of the pier from this location.

I didn't process any World of Color photos, so this one will have to do...

The light was amazing just after sunset on Thursday night at Disney California Adventure.

The arc of the clouds and reds was perfect and made it's own natural vignette for the scene.

It's Wednesday and that means more World of Color.. or waiting for World of Color in this case. You know how things seem to go so slow when you are anxiously awaiting something exciting... the reflection on the water is a good example of how time slows down.

I'll give a full review later, however first impressions of Disneyland. One, never go during Labour Day again, far too busy. Second, more organic in terms of presentation and the design of Walt's original Magic Kingdom.

This was shot from the balcony of Ariel's Grotto during our dinner there. Certainly the best sunset we saw, a little disappointed because I shot this handheld. Only regret is that i didn't set up my tripod, but I think my girlfriend would have killed me if did that during dinner.

I know what you're thinking. Yes, I definitely did just post a photo of Paradise Pier.

Today marks the 15th anniversary of Disney California Adventure! I remember visiting DCA in 2002 for the very first time, and have been coming back ever since. While much of the park has changed, Paradise Pier has always been memorable to me. Sadly, we no longer have great attractions like the Orange Stinger or The Sun Wheel (RIP)... but DCA has evolved into a wonderful neighbor to Disneyland. Here's to another 15 years!

And yes, my title is to honor Whoopi's show, Golden Dreams. May DCA 1.0, my greatest love, rest in peace.

It's World of Color Wednesday so I thought a little game of Cat & Mouse would be nice.

Taken on a wonderful evening filled with good friends, good food and an awesome viewing location for the World of Color Show.

We just got back from a wonderful trip to Disneyland and I have many pictures to upload. Here is the first one. As part of the California Adventure improvements they changed the Sunwheel into Mickey's Fun Wheel... while in some ways this change seems silly (they basically switched the Mickey on California Screamin' and the sun on the Sun wheel to be the reverse) one of the changes they made as part of this I much approve of... they added some really fantastic lighting to the Fun Wheel and it is a show unto itself... you could sit there watching it for a long time. Unfortunately, as another part of the improvements they have Paradise Bay drained which meant no night time reflections :( I was determined to get some reflection picture of the Fun Wheel and managed to find someplace that still had water! Not a perfect reflection but I still like it!

The Golden Zephyr might just be one of my new favorite things to photograph. All those spinning lights with even more spinning lights in the background, what's not to love.

For this one, I faded back into a corner across the walkway from the ride and set up my tripod (Yes, a real tripod) and waited for the spinning to begin. It took about 20 minutes to get the shot that I wanted because either the Zephyr was loading and unloading with the Fun Wheel Spinning or the Zephyr was spinning and the Fun Wheel wasn't. I wanted to have the Zephyr, Fun Wheel and the Swings all going at one time but they never all ran at the same time. No Photoshop or Layering for this shot, just waiting for the right time and timing the exposure to get a cool pattern on the Fun Wheel. It seems like exposures between 7 and 12 seconds give the coolest Fun Wheel Patterns.

gotta thank disneymike for finding us this spot to shoot this... before world of color, there were lots of spots to get this classic disney shot... that's no longer the case.

Mickey's Fun Wheel at dusk is one of those things that has to be experienced in person. The night comes alive in this part of the park and the anticipation grows for World of Color.

We had great clouds and after sunset the blue hour provided a beautiful backdrop.

The 20 second exposure gave them a pleasant blur and Disney took care of the rest.

While I was discouraged about the rainy day during our DCA/DL trip, I was very excited to capture this cloudy sunset at Paradise Pier.

Life seems to get so busy at this time of year. I hope to make more time to edit & share my pics as well as enjoying all of your wonderful images.

Hope you have a wonderful day! Thanks for looking!!

Disney California Adventure

Paradise Pier

In somewhat ironic fashion, on our first trip to Disneyland, last August, we were overwhelmed by California Adventure as a whole, the park that many locals trash, but underwhelmed by World of Color, the nighttime spectacular that many have anointed as the park's redeeming attraction. My initial impression of the show was that, while technically impressive, it was little more than a quick Disney montage show.

When describing it to Walt Disney World fans, the most apt comparison I could previously make was to PhilharMagic. By contrast, however, I thought PhilharMagic works really well because the montages (if you can even call them that since they're basically new "footage") are entwined with one another with a central storyline. World of Color's montages are not.

That said, seeing it again totally changed both of our opinions of the show. Without a doubt, this was because of the front-row viewing area. It was well-worth getting wet to have this vantage. While the show still is a bit montage-ish in nature, the opening and conclusion tie the show together pretty nicely. Plus, from the front, the grandeur of the show really does compensate for any storytelling shortcomings.

It's difficult to articulate why our opinions of the show changed so much, but I guess I would now compare the show to Wishes! Both are truly emotive. Standing alone, Wishes! would be a mediocre show, as it's just simple montages of characters wishing. However, taken as a whole, with the montages, Cinderella Castle, and fireworks exploding overhead, it's something magical. Not nearly as magical as Remember...Dreams Come True, but that's another caption for another day!

I went to DCA yesterday in hopes of a good sunset but instead all I got was a cloudy glow that hardly lit up the sky, not one of the best in the book for me. On the other hand, there was a killer blue hour and the sky just seemed to be the perfect shade of blue for a really long time! I crammed in as many shots as I could around Paradise Pier before the light faded and the orange mucky skies showed up.

As for the shot, this is a 3 shot HDR, masked in CS5, and some Nik Software. If you have a moment this looks much better when viewed large on black, to do so just click on the picture.

Please don't hesitate to tell me what you think, comments and constructive criticism are welcome and appreciated! :)

*PS I didn't forget it's Fireworks Friday, I've got one of those too. It will show up a little later today since I'm too tired to finish processing it.

This one took a bit of patience to get everything I wanted.

I really wanted as much movement as possible so I stayed there shooting images of the Jumpin Jellyfish both going (but not at the same time), the Golden Zephyr spinning and the Fun Wheel spinning in the lower distance.

It also took a bit of patience layering all those elements together.

Thank goodness I also have a patient wife who stood around waiting for me to do this on our Anniversary.
