Cottonwoods and underbrush at the head of Lake Wenatchee all decked out with hoar frost after a long foggy freezing night lifted just as we arrived.

White River Falls at its low point reveals a series of water sculpted shapes reminiscent of shapes and forms in dolphins, or even human forms..morphs that accommodate all the forces around them, climate, gravity, Vegetation, as wells as morphing to the earths crust and accumulate some pumice from millennia to millennium, or less...all this revealed at this lowest point at that part of the path of the watershed.

Scale is the 5th dimension, after time, and the trees, veins, sand patterns, all follow the tao in expressing the universe

Whatever the math, the shallower the mud, the faster the drying, the smaller the patterns and thus, like so many other metapatterns in nature, one gets the feeling that there is an underlying pattern which spiritually minded mathematicians fascinated by Chaos Theory have called "The Thumbprint of God"

The covers of every issue of Time magazine published from 1923 to summer 2009.

 

Total number of covers: 4535.

 

The large percentage of the covers included red borders. We cropped these borders and scaled all images to the same size to allow a user see more clearly the temporal patterns across all covers.

Mapping 4535 Time covers into a grid organized by publicatoon date reveals a number of historical patterns. Here are some of them:

  

Medium: In the 1920s and 1930s Time covers use mostly photography. After 1941, the magazine switches to paintings. In the later decades the photography gradually comes to dominate again. In the 1990s we see emergence of the contemporary software-based visual language which combines manipulated photography, graphic and typographic elements.

 

Color vs. black and white: The shift from early black and white to full color covers happens gradually, with both types coexisting for many years.

 

Hue: Distinct “color periods” appear in bands: green, yellow/brown, red/blue, yellow/brown again, yellow, and a lighter yellow/blue in the 2000s.

 

Brightness: The changes in brightness (the mean of all pixels’ grayscale values for each cover) follow a similar cyclical pattern.

 

Contrast and Saturation: Both gradually increase throughout the 20th century. However, since the end of the 1990s, this trend is reversed: recent covers have less contrast and less saturation.

 

Content: Initially most covers are portraits of individuals set against neutral backgrounds. Over time, portrait backgrounds change to feature compositions representing concepts. Later, these two different strategies come to co-exist: portraits return to neutral backgrounds, while concepts are now represented by compositions which may include both objects and people – but not particular individuals.

 

The visualization also reveals an important “metapattern”: almost all changes are gradual. Each of the new communication strategies emerges slowly over a number of months, years or even decades.

As the temperature rises, then the water rises; as the temperature falls, then the water lowers. Each day the ice sculptures invite a fresh look at the river's edge. No other season sees so much daily change.

Sometimes Nature Reveals Her Inner Workings and Metapatterns Form a Morphic Resonance that Inspires Me.

I have photographed this spot at least a 60 times over the 30 years I've lived here, and still I find new angles, new forms, new awarenesses.

It's beyond description all I see, and think about when I see an image like this, color, winter, but mostly the lines of reflection and surface tension which between them create miniature etchings of the Tao, and cause me to speculate on Moire Patterns and Surface Tension, and Metapatterns...the underlying foundation of the material word often expressed in repetitive fractalesque ways. I deliberatale left this at full size so we can appreciate the immense amount of detail the Canon IS10 on Macro setting can reveal, especially when stabilized with a delayed timer and tripod, Which I have very rarely done, but the subject inspires me.

Must be Seen Large to Make Sense This little book fell into my hands last year at our local book store, A Book for All Seasons, and immediately put much of my photography into perspective. I see now that many flickr members are moved by these same shapes, and my intention is simply to make this book known to them, not to infringe on copyrights or to 'sell it". I hope illustrating a few of its pages makes this clear.

After four days of below freezing temperatures, the shore is composed of elements of each night, minor waves change the shape, as do breezes, this is about 96 hours of work.

Oil slicks are very beautiful, calling into question the concept of beauty as something positive and worth striving for. Many years ago, when on the Island of Fiji I went out with a family on their fishing boat I noticed the incredible blue of the water near the reefs. The captain pointed out that great beauty can be associated with danger, and so, I suppose it is with oil slicks, that are as fractals and metapatterns nonetheless.

Forgive me if I've become a Fractaladdict, but sitting behind the monitor, while the clouds outside darken the otherwise black and white world, these metapatterns that have resulted from mathematical iterations and digital envisioning have allowed my brain to expand the way I see, and I feel drawn to share these visions, from the hundreds of images I've saved.

Whenever I'm just a little flattened by life and need an uplift, a few steps out the back door will bring me to my garden, which always has something to show me if I take time to look. Here again are the fractal metapattern echoed in every leaf, human body, beach ripple, tree, in short in life.

I always love the meditation of looking at the patterns waves make on the beach...gravity, flow, obstacles, slope, tides, and the elements of liquid and solid combine to imitate the branchial metapatterns found in trees, blood vessels and a host of other things.

This rock was off a point at Salt Creek County Park on the Straight of Juan de Fuca at high tide. Once upon a time it was some mountain top, another time an ocean bottom, and mixed in there somewhere the ripples of ice ages, earthquakes and, who knows. Comes now water to cover it from rising seas, melting glaciers, comes now a small wave, comes now light from a sun, refractions, reflections, comes now my Canon camera, my eye. Meditate on this moment, for it too, is constantly changing.

Who doesn't pick up the shells? How better to appreciate these fractalesque metapatterns of a skeleton of a living being than a photograph, or just rubbing it in your pocket until you get it back to the picknic table.

A few days after the last rain, the mud dries into the patterns imposed by the greater basin in which it is located and the materials below it.

Forgive me if I've become a Fractaladdict, but sitting behind the monitor, while the clouds outside darken the otherwise black and white world, these metapatterns that have resulted from mathematical iterations and digital envisioning have allowed my brain to expand the way I see, and I feel drawn to share these visions, from the hundreds of images I've saved.

I continue to be fascinated by the structure of first ice along creeks and lake shores with rocks...the frozen lines of the flow of the water, and the echoes of the shapes of the surrounding rocks all speak to me of the Tao, Li, Metapatterns, "The Flow" and I'm excited to see, in this one, echoes of a river otter's outline, which again speaks to the "Morphic Resonance" repetition of shape and form that literally outline where the lines of those forces coalesce, and then crystallize.

This particular stump had a 'shield' of hardened 'skin' that had a complex and beautiful design after 27 years of weathering.

The patterns on wood under the bark left behind by worms always attract me.

The book I most valued in my childhood was La Petit Prince by San Exupery..in the opening scene a little boy from space greets a downed pilot in the desert, asking for a drawing that the pilot couldn't draw, because he gave up art when he drew what looked like a hat and said it was an elephant ingested by a boa constrictor...no one recognized the drawing, and one great artist was too discouraged to try again, until the little prince asked him to draw a sheep.

Modern Artists would do well to study the murals of the cliffs in Utah before they proclaim they have discovered something new. There is no end to the fascinating patterns and textures found on the cliff walls in Utah, especially Capital Reef Canyons

This is another attempt to dramatize the 'oerpatroon' or fundamental patterns of the Universe as in Li. Trees, veins, leaves, whole watersheds, perhaps whole universes and galaxies are influenced by whatever shapes this. Walking on the beach with sand becomes as much a visual feast as a rushing water changes the landscape at our feet instantly, yet returns to the same pattern. The contrasting light tells much of the time of day, and the angle to the sun I was standing. Here 'go with the flow' has meaning.

Fascinating shapes, textures, and metapatterns caught my eye, and finally coerced me to record, what thousands of photographers and scientists before me have already recorded. The reptilian, fishlike scales are fascinating that plants and animals can echo each others functional shapes.

Reading Ice is as exciting, as reading hyeroglyphics.

How the flower world and the animal world co-operate and use the same 'metapatterns to express their potential for fertility is someting of a miracle to me.

Fortunately the next rain will dissolve this graffiti, but not all graffiti in the National Parks are this lucky.

Texture, light, pattern, composition, contrast, fractal metapatterns all combine to help me see a landscape in miniature.
