Went to this year's KC Ren Fest on Sept 14th. Don't know if it was just an off weekend, or what, but it just didn't have the same feel to me that past years have had. Not as many variety of shows/entertainment, and my gypsy troupe was more of a "dance class". The troupe was even cast completely different from the dancers I'd seen in prior years.

for more about my work, please see my profile.

This was among the items in a box of odds & ends which I inherited. It came to me along with an old Goodell Pratt lathe which had been in the family for 60-some years. I have no idea what it is used for, and am going to post a query on an appropriate discussion forum to see what I can find out.

Shoshenq or Sheshonq II was one of three late period pharaohs (21st-22nd Dynasties) whose burials were found more or less intact at the site of the ancient city of Tanis to the north-east of Egypt's Delta region. The country was divided during these reigns and the burials were nowhere near as rich as the more famous 'intact' burial of Tutankhamun, but nonetheless yielded some spectacular finds.

Shoshenq II's burial appears to have been a reinterment, having been found in the antechamber of the tomb of Psusennes I, and it has been suggested that his original tomb had become waterlogged in Antiquity. His funerary equipment was reburied with both Psusennes and Amenemope in chambers beneath the paving of the temple of Amun in Tanis, where they lay forgotten until their rediscovery by Pierre Montet in 1939.

Montet's discovery was the greatest find in Egypt since Tutankhamun, but it's discovery and excavation on the eve of war in 1939-40 meant the find never received the attention it deserved.

Shoshenq II's silver coffin was especially remarkable in bearing the face of the falcon-god Horus (god of kingship with whom the Pharaoh identified as his incarnation on Earth) rather than the king's own likeness (an inner coffin of partially gilded cartonnage is also hawk-headed). Only the gold mummy-mask within showed the face of the king in beaten gold, though only the face itself is preserved.

I was tempted to try to see if it would move, but what would I have done if the empty reservoir had started to fill, and I couldn't turn it off. Water and I don't mix - just ask Dennis about the swimming pool I created in his lounge on the day we were going to put his house on the market.....!

This may look like a doughnut, but it's actually the lip for a vase, almost ready to be soldered on to it.
