A walk up the Angidy Valley from Tintern Village is a very enjoyable experience as one is surrounded by remains of the metal working industry which flourished around Tintern from the middle ages through to the industrial revolution.

An advert issued by the Scunthorpe based division of United Steel, the Appleby Frodingham Company. The concern had its origins in the early years of the iron industry in Lincolnshire with the formation of the Frodingham Iron Company in 1864 followed by the Appleby in 1875. Steel production was begun in 1890. After a period of merger via the Steel Company of Scotland both companies became part of United Steel Companies in 1918 and gained their title of Appleby-Frodingham in 1934. The works, astonishingly, still survives as the Corus Works.
The advert appears in the Lincolnshire County Handbook, not dated as usual, but c1955. The handbook was, less usually, issued with the approval of three county councils; Parts of Holland, Kesteven and Lindsey as Lincolnshire, like Yorkshire and its Ridings, was technically divided into separate county councils.

I'd be the first to say that Abram Games was a remarkable and, deservedly, much respected graphic designer but - it is grand to see another poster/press advert in this remarkable series issued by British Aluminium in the early 1950s by an artist other than Games! And it is by another of the greats of the time; Frederick Henri Kay Henrion. The already established German born designer moved to the UK in 1938 and here became both a teacher and practioner. He is noted as being responsible for some of the most noted and long lasting corporate identities for numerous companies as well as for advertising and publciity materials.
In 1966 a seried of early boundary adjustments int he Black Country area of Staffordshire and Worcestershire saw some smaller municipalities merged into larger, neighbouring authorities. One such amalgamation was that of Tipton into the County Borough of West Bromwich, a borough that also subsumed Wednesbury. Oddly all was to change again in 1974 when West Bromwich became the new Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell.
Anyhow, this change accounts for the reason that the old Tipton concern of Triplex Foundries Group appears in the 1966 edition of the West Bromwich official guide. Triplex had its origins in the 1918/1920 formation of Triplex Foundry to make the Triplex grate and stoves that became a well-known brand. As can be seen, the company expanded over time to become effectively a holding company for numerous allied subidiary companies, mostly connected with the old Black Country 'metal bashing' trades. This Group had been set up in 1961 and in 1987 they merged to form Triplex Lloyd. Some elements of the Group do still, I think survive, through further amalgamations and disposals in the Doncasters castings group.
The advert takes the form of an old style signpost, usingt he 'ways' metaphor, and lists the 12 subsidiaries all of whom have local addresses.

An advert in The Architectural Review for April 1951 for the Birmingham concern of Hope’s Heating and Engineering of Birmingham. The company was an offshoot of the long established Henry Hope & Co Ltd of neighbouring Smethwick who were manufacturer’s of architectural metalwork and glazing systems. Interestingly this advert is in the strong ‘corporate style’ adopted by Hope’s with a considered use of typeface and typographical layout.
The precursor to the "Yellow Pages" was for many years the "Classified Telephone Directory", sometimes know as the "Buff Book' as well, and this was produced and issued under agreement by J Weiner Ltd., of London, on behalf of the Post Office telephones service. They're a useful research tool and, don't laugh, make for fascinating reading!
This is the 1934 Birmingham & District edition, covering the whole of the Black Country including Wolverhampton, Walsall, Dudley and Kidderminster (and we shouldn't forget West Bromwich either) and so covers some fascinating trades and companies.
The front covers followed a template and made much use of the advertising space that allowed Weiner's to produce the directories and the GPO to take a cut! As can be seen there are reminders of the area's importance in the metal trades, especially in metal finishing and products. The banner advert across the top is for one such company, Webley & Scott, "general engineers". It makes no mention of the product they were, of course, most famous for and that was another Birmingham speciality - gunmakers.
Cobb & Co was the name of a successful coaching company in Australia, established in 1853. The name Cobb & Co grew to great prominence in the late 19th century, when it was carried by many stagecoaches carrying passengers and mail to various Australian goldfields, and later to many regional and remote areas of the Australian outback. The company name was also used in New Zealand and South Africa.

A boy works in a metal casting factory in Dhaka. These factories employ young boys without any pay for the first year, only providing them with two meals a day. They work in extreme conditions without safety gears like gloves, goggles, and other protective material. In exchange they learn the skills of the trade. Dhaka, Bangladesh. February 23, 2008.
